Beyond lie the broad and fertile Connecticut River valley and the <span id="ref614908"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Berkshire-Hills" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Berkshire Hills</a>. The now-paved <span id="ref614909"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Mohawk-Trail" class="md-crosslink ">Mohawk Trail</a> crosses the Berkshires—the Hoosac Range on the east and the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Taconic-Range" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Taconic Range</a> on the west.
