This reaction indicates that Jesus' teaching was not only new but also profoundly impactful. In the historical context, the Jewish people were accustomed to teachings that were heavily reliant on tradition and the interpretations of the scribes. Jesus' approach was radically different, leaving the people in awe of His wisdom and insight.<p><b>at His teaching</b><br />The term "teaching" here is derived from the Greek "&#948;&#953;&#948;&#945;&#967;&#942;" (didach&#275;), which refers to doctrine or instruction. Jesus' teaching was not merely about imparting knowledge but was transformative, challenging the listeners to reconsider their understanding of God and His kingdom. His teachings were rooted in the Scriptures but presented with clarity and authority that was unparalleled.<p><b>because He taught as one who had authority</b><br />The word "authority" comes from the Greek "&#7952;&#958;&#959;&#965;&#963;&#943;&#945;" (exousia), meaning power or right. Unlike the scribes, who often quoted other authorities to validate their teachings, Jesus spoke with inherent authority. This authority was not derived from human sources but from His divine nature as the Son of God. His teachings carried the weight of divine truth, compelling the listeners to recognize the presence of God's kingdom in their midst.<p><b>and not as the scribes</b><br />The scribes were the learned men of the Jewish community, responsible for teaching and interpreting the Law. However, their teachings often relied on the traditions of men rather than the direct revelation of God. The contrast between Jesus and the scribes highlights the difference between human tradition and divine revelation. Jesus' teachings were fresh, living, and directly from God, unlike the often dry and burdensome interpretations of the scribes.<div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/ellicott/mark/1.htm">Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers</a></div>(22) <span class= "bld">And they were astonished.</span>--The verbal agreement with <a href="/matthew/7-28.htm" title="And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:">Matthew 7:28</a> (where see Note) suggests the thought that St. Mark had heard or read that passage. The verb in the Greek is a very strong and expressive one; it is a very suitable word to express the first impressions of utter amaze-sent produced by our Lord's "teaching." There were several things which caused his teaching (<span class="greek">&#x3b4;&#x1f77;&#x3b4;&#x3b1;&#x3c7;&#x3b7;</span>) to differ from that of the scribes. There was no lack of self-assertion in their teaching; but their words did not carry weight. Their teaching was based chiefly on tradition; it dwelt much on the "mint and anise and cummin" of religion, but neglected "judgment and mercy and faith." Christ's teaching, on the contrary, was eminently spiritual. And then he practiced what he taught. Not so the scribes. Thus far St. Mark's narrative bears the character of brevity and conciseness, suitable to an introduction.
