night. Each area has a different feel, yet taken together the overall space buzzes with energy.</p> <p>The restaurant carries a pedigree, too. It's owned by C&L; Partners - Aqua's Laurent Manrique and Chris Condy - with Bistro Don Giovanni's Donna Scala as a consultant. Scala was first on the project, which adjoins the main lobby of the Hilton, but Hilton wound up leasing the space to C&L.;</p> <p>Manrique, who is the longtime chef at Aqua and newer chef at Fifth Floor, both also downtown, designed the menu with Scala. It's executed by Patrick Kehler, most recently chef at Circolo in San Francisco, but previously chef de cuisine at Aqua. </p> <p>The menu is an accessible one, focusing on simply prepared food with some Mediterranean influences - steaks, chicken, lamb chops, fish and the like - cooked and served in Staub cast-iron pans, and accompanied by a sauce of the diner's choosing. Accompaniments are ordered separately.</p> <p>That approach generally helps keeps prices as accessible as the menu - a 10-ounce top sirloin is $21, a mahi mahi steak is $20. It also lets diners share side dishes (all $4), which include crisp, hot fries, a deliciously rich spinach Parmesan gratin, garlicky sauteed mushrooms and an OK melange of green beans and tomatoes. </p> <p>Starters are solidly Mediterranean, but may be the most uneven part of the menu. The most satisfying of a wide variety sampled over three visits was one that required no cooking - a selection of Paul Bertolli's Fra' Mani charcuterie (prosciutto, soppressata, mortadella and salami) paired with cornichons, pickled onions and whole-grain mustard ($10). It's a good choice to share, as is the piadini ($11), a pizza-like grilled galette cradling speck and artichokes under a light glaze of mozzarella.</p> <p>Another grilled bread dish was less successful: a deconstructed oil-slicked pissaladiere ($11), six thin pastry rectangles topped with caramelized onions, olives and chunks of sardines whose strong flavor overwhelmed everything else. A cazuela ($9) with tiny clams, crumbled chorizo, piquillo peppers and fingerling potatoes had a nice kick but didn't quite come together.</p> <p>Salads were equally up and down. The calamari ($11), in an enticing-sounding mix with salted watermelon and tomatoes, lacked punch. Beet salad ($13), with diced red and yellow beets and walnuts, topped with goat cheese, was dull on one visit but sparkled on another. A large whole-leaf Caesar ($9) was also lackluster, mostly because of a watery dressing.</p> <p>Things get back on track with the main courses. A hanger steak ($18) comes medium-rare as requested, and the meat was good enough not to need the dominating shallot and red wine sauce our server recommended with it. However, a moist and juicy spring chicken ($17) benefited from the suggested herb and Parmesan olive oil vinaigrette. Lamb chops ($23) are equally good and tender, their lambiness decidedly pronounced but paired well with a mustard, rosemary and white wine sauce. </p> <p>Fish dishes come in enameled pans, which capture their olive oil marinade as well as cooking juices, and make added sauces, such as a caper and parsley brown butter, overkill; it's best to order those on the side. Still, the halibut ($23) and sea bass ($22) arrived well prepared and fresh tasting. A whole roasted snapper for two ($44) looked terrific one night served to an adjacent table, but was unavailable on our next visit.</p> <p>Urban Tavern's menu also includes several mussel preparations (all $14). The pastis and fennel mussels were redolent with those Mediterranean flavors. On another visit, the classic mariniere version was equally balanced, although the mussels themselves were not as plump. </p> <p>Three other casseroles on the menu can be ordered for one, two or four people. They include a chicken bouillabaisse ($19, $38 or $72) and a deeply flavored Catalan-style beef daube ($22, $42 or $79) made of comfort-rich short ribs, carrots, cherry tomatoes and potatoes.</p> <p>If you still have room, generously portioned desserts (all $9) can be worth sharing. The last of the season's peaches, poached and topped with a tart raspberry sauce, almonds and vanilla ice cream, anchor a seldom-seen peach Melba. There's also a delightfully eggy brioche pain perdu with creme fraiche and roasted fruit. Chocolate "crunch" brings a satisfying wedge of flourless chocolate cake, nut-covered square of chocolate mousse, hazelnut ice cream and creme anglaise. A sturdy pear and apple cobbler is also satisfying, much more so than a dense star anise- and saffron-infused creme Catalane.</p> <p>As with the food, the staff can be somewhat variable, from professional to overly friendly. Still, service on our visits was generally prompt and efficient, and while our telephone reservation was lost on all three of our visits, we were still accommodated graciously.</p> <p>Urban Tavern's location - one block from the Geary and Curran theaters and just a few blocks from the Golden Gate and Orpheum - make it a good pre- and post-theater choice. Its atmosphere, with a communal table and lounge, make it welcoming. And the menu offers plenty of satisfying choices to make the food a draw as well.</p> <p> </p> <div class="infobox"><h3 style="infobox">The wine list </h3><p>Urban Tavern's wine list offers excellent, food-friendly choices, and wines that can be hard to find. That's the good news. The not-so-good news is that markups can be quite high.</p> <p>Take the 2005 Michaud Vineyard the Pinnacles Estate Marsanne from Monterey ($77), for example. While the wine might retail for $32, it's a new grape from a top-notch producer, and well worth a try. So is the more reasonably priced 2005 Clendenen Family Tocai Friulano ($40) from Santa Maria Valley. On the other hand, while a wine like the 2004 Andrew Will Sheridan Vineyard red blend from Yakima Valley is worth seeking out, it's $119 at Urban Tavern, but around $40 retail.</p> <p>The half-bottle list is wide-ranging as well, with two dozen wines ($20-$152). The 22 by-the-glass selections feature a variety of styles at $9-$16.50. Beers - there are a dozen - are strictly by the bottle.However, the wine list offers no descriptions; given the many excellent but lesser-known selections, more information would be useful.
