we’ve been alarmed by the rise in book bans in recent years. Book bans seek to silence black, brown and LGBTQIA+ authors and erase stories that educate and empathize with other perspectives and worldviews. But libraries are working together to make books effectively unbannable.

Last month, at LibLearnX in Phoenix DPLA brought together a panel of professionals whose institutions work tirelessly to improve access to banned books. The session explored how library-driven initiatives, such as Brooklyn Public Library’s Books Unbanned, ALA’s United Against Book Bans, and the Digital Public Library of America’s Banned Book Club, are actively combating censorship and safeguarding critical access to knowledge for all. As the leader of DPLA’s Curation Corps, I joined the panel alongside Emma Eriksson from Brooklyn Public Library and Kent Oliver from ALA’s Public Policy and Advocacy Office.

A packed house for DPLA’s “Unbannable” session at LibLearnX in Phoenix, AZ, in January 2025.

During the session, I shared that, in the last quarterly update, 356 new titles that have been recently removed from libraries were added to The Banned Book Club, bringing the collection to over 1,600 ebooks and audiobooks. With social media platforms in constant flux, as shown by TikTok’s current instability, it is critical researchers understand and archive digital pieces of our historical record.

A chief problem with studying and preserving social media is that the measures that platforms have enacted to avoid botting, abuse, and regulatory scrutiny, also fluster normal archival and researcher activity. And while it used to be simple to archive the doings of a presidential administration, the documentary evidence that archives traditionally preserve for future generations – letters, speeches, official documents – is now scattered across countless social media feeds, often behind paywalls or subject to terms of service that restrict access. This creates a significant gap in our historical record, hindering our ability to understand the present and learn from the past.

This isn’t just an academic concern. It affects all of us. We need to understand how these platforms shape and sway public opinion and impact our social fabric. Without access to the necessary data, we risk being unable to make sense of the digital world around us.

Our research reveals a stark reality: we are losing the battle on understanding the societal impacts of social media platforms. It’s a patchwork of under-resourced projects. When we spoke with researchers, we heard continuing themes of being under-resourced and stymied by platforms that made their work more difficult rather than less. This has to change.

We need to establish robust mechanisms that empower researchers, historians, and archivists to access and analyze social media data ethically and responsibly. Libraries, with their long-standing expertise in information management and preservation, are uniquely positioned to play a central role in this effort. They can provide the necessary infrastructure, tools, and expertise to support long-term research initiatives and ensure that this crucial part of our history is not lost.

Our paper explores these challenges and proposes concrete solutions, highlighting the potential of libraries to ensure that future generations have access to a complete and accurate record of our times.

We encourage you to read the full paper to learn more about this critical issue and how libraries can help us navigate the complex landscape of social media.

The digital town square.
