He flew all the way from Toronto to Milan to give an impressive keynote speech at the Fleet Europe Summit on the potential – both positive and negative – of AI. </strong></p> <p>The Fleet Europe Days 2024, on 23 and 24 October in Milan, were all abuzz with <a href="https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/tags/ai">Artificial Intelligence</a> – the term that pervaded almost every session and animated nearly every presentation. </p> <h2>Bigger picture</h2> <p>Mr Cawse took a step back from looking at the specific practicalities of embedding AI in, say, the analysis of driver behaviour or the remarketing of ex-lease vehicles, and framed the debated around AI in a bigger picture. One that was both very exciting and more than a bit terrifying.</p> <p>Interviewer Steven Schoefs, Head of Strategic Relations at Nexus Communication, asked for Mr Cawse’s feelings on a couple of provocative statements on AI, like this one from Sam Altman, former CEO of Open AI: “AI will probably most likely lead to the end of the world, but in the meantime, there'll be great companies.”</p> <p>Mr Cawse didn’t fundamentally disagree. “AI is the biggest opportunity for the world I’ve seen in my 40-year career. It will revolutionize knowledge, healthcare, materials”. As well as telematics and fleets, of course.</p> <h2>“Existential risk”</h2> <p>Together with great opportunities comes great risk. Mr Cawse identified three risk horizons: “In the short term: the question of who owns the data. In the medium term: the danger of bad actors. And in the long term: there is an existential risk”. Why existential? Because we can’t see an upper limit to how smart AI will get, and “you can’t control something that’s smarter than you”. </p> <p>However, possibly a greater danger, and certainly a more immediate one, is not adopting AI right now, while everyone else is doing so. </p> <p>Just one example of the jaw-dropping potential of AI: a video of Mr Cawse speaking perfect Italian in a message to his employees in Italy. Except that he made that speech in English, and AI translated his words, using his voice, and adapting his lip movements. </p> <h2>Very impactful</h2> <p>“So, AI is not pie in the sky. It’s changing things right now”. Also in automotive. Mr Cawse pointed to the emergence of <a href="https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/autonomous/germany/article/vw-introduce-robotaxis-hamburg?a=FJA05&t%5B0%5D=Autonomous&t%5B1%5D=Volkswagen&curl=1">robotaxi services</a>: “It’s been predicted for a long time, and it’s taken a long time to arrive. But it’s here, and it will be very impactful on the industry.”</p> <p>If you’re not yet on the AI bandwagon, now is the best time to hop on, Mr Cawse concluded: “Get signed up to ChatGPT or a similar large language model now. Learn what AI is capable of, develop muscle memory. But be careful – don’t share personal data.”</p> <p>Other Fleet Europe Summit sessions delved into the potential of technological innovation with greater detail – and without the prospect of an AI-driven Armageddon over the horizon. Their focus was on how fleets can spot the innovative trees in the digital forest that are right for their purposes. </p> <h2>Strategic Transformation</h2> <p>Indeed, the first editorial session was titled How to navigate through the current electric mobility context? Co-presenter Hugo Salaun, Chief Strategy Officer at Arval, introduced a brand-new consulting methodology to help fleets electrify: Arval STAR – the second word stands for Strategic Transformation through Actionable Recommendations. </p> <p>Embedding that approach is a range of tech-driven fleet management supports, such as tailored charging solutions, an extended range of mobility options, and diversified leasing solutions. For example, “why not lease one EV for eight years, instead of two cars for four years each?”</p> <p>Philippe Huysmans, Chief Growth Officer at Ridecell, reminded us that we are all consumers first, all increasingly used to interface with the world via our cellphones – and increasingly, digital natives. “Half of 18-to-34-year-olds would prefer to buy a car online”, he cited a recent study. </p> <h2>Dynamic lifecycle</h2> <p>Business customer preferences are changing accordingly: “Increasingly, they want seasonal leases, used-car leases, an on-demand fleet. Echoing Mr Salaun’s statement, he suggested that “EVs are a perfect candidate for a multi-life cycle”.</p> <p>But that is just an interim step towards a dynamic lifecycle, in which vehicles will be monitored constantly for usage, predictive maintenance, and predicted market value.</p> <p>In Fleet Forward Means Tech Forward, Corrado Sciolla, CEO at Octo Telematics, pointed to his company’s remarkable success in implementing telematics for insurance purposes: “We have a market penetration in the Italian insurance industry of 20%, while the European average is just 5%.” </p> <p>And what does that mean? AI-supported telematics is used to analyse driver behaviour, accidents and accident damage, and even CO<sub>2</sub> emissions. It has helped reduce the cost of insurance by 40%, and car accidents by 18%. Steffen Schick, CEO at Fleet Logistics (recently acquired by TraXall). </p> <h2>Contactless payments</h2> <p>How can you benefit from a digital fleet? That was the topic of three quick-fire pitch and debates. Martin Nørgaard Høgh, Vice President at ConnectedCars, explained how to “take the fluff out of telematics”. By using OEM-provided data or backfilling cars with their own device, it’s possible for every car to be connected, irrespective of age, brand, or model. </p> <p>Mathieu Chènebit, CEO and founder of Echoes, made the point that offering customers harmonized, actionable data “is not the future, it’s what we do today”. It’s a service with many use cases, from transitioning to EVs and monitoring TCO to fighting fraud and emissions. </p> <p>“85% of all face to face payments are already done by contactless – in Italy it’s even 92%”, said Richard Campion, Head of Fleet and Mobility at Visa. Fleets want a similar single payment solution for all their needs. Visa obliges: “Visa 2.0 is a virtual card that offers fleet-specific elements like measuring kilowatts charged or litres tanked, driver and vehicle ID, and facilitates fuel discounting.”</p> <h2>R for Robotaxi</h2> <p>In a pitch and debate session on the impact of technological innovation on last mile logistics and mobility, Carlos Lahoz, VP Sales and Ownership Experience at Kia Europe, explained how the Korean OEM was going to roll out a whole new family of LCVs, fit for a whole new ecosystem consisting of e-commerce, digitalization, and changing cities. </p> <p>The PV5, PV6 and PV3, which will be launched in the next few years, will be efficient and cost-effective, come in passenger and cargo versions, and will be connected and equipped for DC charging, over-the-air updates, and smart routing. In 2030, Kia will roll out the PV5-R, with the R standing for “Robotaxi”. By then, the company expects both legislation and infrastructure to be ready for that great leap forward. </p> <p>Michele Cipullo, Targa Telematics, Go To Market Manager at Targa Telematics, explained the main job of companies like his in mainstreaming more efficient and cost-effective LCV management: “Remove the technical complexities from the discussion. Our customers are not tech guys”. </p> <h2>15% of salary</h2> <p>By providing such frictionless access to the advantages of telematics, Targa helps make a real difference on the topics that matter to LCV fleets: “Operational efficiency, safety for drivers and other road users, and a reduction of the Total Cost of Mobility, among others”. </p> <p>Nicolas Tschann, CCO at B-ON, pointed out that with a mere 4% of vehicles electrified, the LCV and truck segment is lagging behind others. Why? Several reasons: “Electrified versions are typically 30% more expensive. There is no one-stop shop, so implementation is confusing. And they have a high operating cost, unless you have the right software to help you.” </p> <p>Naturally, B-ON has an answer to these challenges. Not only will it build a van at cost parity with ICE models and offer a simple, affordable, wholly integrated solution for implementing them, it also provides a novel way of looking at the charging conundrum: “Your drivers could be spending up to 15% of their time – and therefore their salary – on charging their vans. The first thing you have to do is use software to solve this.
