מנחם בגין להעביר את אירועי הזיכרון הממלכתיים לזכר השואה מיום הזיכרון הממלכתי שנקבע בשנת 1959, ליום תשעה באב. לשיטתו של בגין, היום המציין את חורבן בתי המקדש, היה גם זה הראוי להזכרת השואה ואימיה. בכך ביקש בגין להציב את השואה על רצף האסונות שאירעו לעם היהודי ולהציגה כתוצאה ישירה של החורבן ועזיבת הארץ.</p> <p>הצעתו של בגין לא זכתה לתמיכה רחבה. הן בשל המקום שתפס יום הזיכרון לשואה בתודעה הציבורית והן בשל העובדה כי תשעה באב חל בתקופת החופש הגדול, באופן המקשה על ציונו בקרב תלמידי בתי הספר. ברם דומה כי הצעתו של בגין ראויה הייתה להידחות לא רק מצד הנחלת זכרה של השואה כי אם גם מצד תכניו ומהותו של יום תשעה באב עצמו.</p> <p>לאורך כל הדורות, ניכרת בדרך ציונו של היום השפעתם של שני מוקדים רעיוניים. האחד – האבל, הצער והיגון על אשר ארע. השני – חשבון הנפש והתענית המתמקדים בלקחי האירועים. הראשון מפנה מבט אל העבר בכאב. השני – צופה אל העתיד, בתקווה שניתן יהיה למנוע את הישנותם של האירועים. לשני המוקדים ניתן ביטוי נרחב במסגרת הלכותיו של היום ומנהגיו המסורתיים. הישיבה על הארץ, אמירת הקינות, שימת אפר על הראש – כל אלו לקוחים מעולמו של האָבֵל, המתקשה להתאושש מצערו. הצום לעומת כל אלו – מלמד על מקומו המרכזי של חשבון הנפש האישי והציבורי במהלך היום ולקראתו.</p> <p>העיון בתולדותיו של היום מלמד שחכמי הדורות נטו להדגיש דווקא את היסוד השני, של חשבון הנפש והתענית. דומה כי עשו זאת מכיוון שבעוד שהאבל והיגון הם תולדות טבעיות של תחושת האדם והציבור הניצבים לנוכח אסונם, הרי שחשבון הנפש וההתבוננות המפוכחת באירועים, בסיבותיהם ובלקחיהם – רחוקים מלהיות מובנים מאליהם ואינם קלים להשגה.</p> <p>ביטוי ראשון להדגשה זו של יסוד התענית וחשבון הנפש מצוי כבר בספרו של הנביא זכריה, מבשר שיבת ציון. בנבואתו מתאר זכריה את שאלתם של השבים לארץ האם עליהם להמשיך ולצום ביום החורבן, לנוכח תקומתה המחודשת של הארץ. תחת לענות ישירות על השאלה, מבקש הנביא להזכירם כי הצום אינו אלא דבר משני, שלאלוהים אין בו כל עניין לכשעצמו. השאלה האמיתית והיחידה לשיטת הנביא, היא האם ישכילו השבים לעמוד בדרישה, שהופנתה גם אל אבותיהם טרם החורבן: "מִשְׁפַּט אֱמֶת שְׁפֹטוּ וְחֶסֶד וְרַחֲמִים עֲשׂוּ אִישׁ אֶת אָחִיו; וְאַלְמָנָה וְיָתוֹם גֵּר וְעָנִי אַל תַּעֲשֹׁקוּ …" (זכריה ז ט-י).</p> <p>גישה זו הוסיפה להדריך גם את חכמי הדורות בקבעם את ראשית נבואתו של ישעיה, כהפטרה המתאימה ביותר לשבת המקדימה את תשעה באב – שבת חזון. באחת מנבואות התוכחה המרות במקרא משים הנביא בפי העם המתאונן את טענת השבר: לוּלֵי יי צְבָאוֹת הוֹתִיר לָנוּ שָׂרִיד כִּמְעָט כִּסְדֹם הָיִינוּ לַעֲמֹרָה דָּמִינוּ (ישעיה א ט). בבואו להשיב לעם על טענתו, כי החורבן עומד בפתח, בממדים לא פחותים מאסונן של סדום ועמורה, בוחר הנביא במילים: "שִׁמְעוּ דְבַר יי קְצִינֵי סְדֹם הַאֲזִינוּ תּוֹרַת אֱלֹהֵינוּ עַם עֲמֹרָה" (שם, י). אתם, אומר הנביא, חושבים כי עוד מעט וסופכם יהיה כסדום ועמורה; אזי דעו לכם כי כבר מזמן הנכם כסדום ועמורה בעצם מעשיכם המושחתים שהחורבן הוא אך תוצאתם הטבעית. העמדת דבריו של ישעיה כקריאה המרכזית לימי בין המצרים, המקדימים את תשעה באב, מאותת לנו כי עניינם של ימים אלו אינו בתוצאות העגומות כי אם בעיקר בסיבות.</p> <p>ברוח זו מתברר עתה מדוע ספק גדול אם הצעתו של מנחם בגין המנוח לשילוב זכרון השואה, ביום תשעה באב מטיבה עם מסריו של יום הצום. בדרכיה המגוונות, מאותת מסורת ישראל כי יום תשעה באב ראוי וידמה פחות ליום הזיכרון לשואה, הצורב והאימתני, והרבה יותר ליום הכיפורים, העוסק בהישרת מבט אישית וציבורית אל המראה.</p> <p>■</p> <p>ביטוי נוסף, ואולי המשמעותי ביותר, לרעיון זה מעניקים לנו חכמי המשנה ברשימת האירועים שאירעו לשיטתם בתשעה באב. רשימה זו, המופיעה במסכת תענית, לא רק מדגישה את מקומו המרכזי של חשבון הנפש בתכני היום אלא גם רומזת על יעדיו. ארבעה אירועים של חורבן מופיעים ברשימה: שריפתם של המקדש הראשון והשני, נפילתה של ביתר – בירת מרד בר כוכבא, וחרישתה של העיר ירושלים. לאלו מוסיפה המשנה אירוע קדום נוסף, שאינו קשור כלל באויב חיצוני – חטא המרגלים. בליל תשעה באב, כך על פי האגדה, שבו נשיאי השבטים ממשימת הריגול ובפיהם – דיבת הארץ. האסונות הלאומים נגרמו, כידוע, על ידי אויבים חיצוניים, אך מקורם, לשיטת המשנה, טמון היה בראש וראשונה בדפוסי ההתנהגות של העם, וחשוב מכך בדפוסי ההתנהגות והמנהיגות של ראשיו באותו לילה עגום. בכך הופך יום תשעה באב מיום של אבל ליום הכיפורים של המנהיגות הלאומית.</p> <p>בצירוף חטא המרגלים, נשיאי השבטים, אל כשלון המרידות במלכות בבל ומלכות רומי מעמידה המשנה לנגד עיננו שני דפוסים מנוגדים של מנהיגות המובילים, כל אחד בדרכו, לחורבן. מחד, מנהיגותם של נשיאי השבטים-המרגלים אשר הובילה את העם לרפיון ידים וייאוש; מנגד, מנהיגותם של ראשי המרידות ברומאים אשר הובילה את יושבי הארץ הזו לתהומות של קנאות ועיוורון.</p> <p>המרגלים בחרו להיוותר אך כמרגלים; את נשיאותם הם הותירו מאחור. מנהיגי המרידות ברומאים, לעומתם, דבקו במנהיגותם עד הסוף המר, ללא כל הרהור ובחינה של הדרך. מרגלי המדבר נכנעו לגעגועי העם לבצלים ולקישואים של מצרים; מנהיגי המרד הגדול – שרפו בקנאותם את מחסני המזון של ירושלים. הראשונים לא הצליחו להרים את ראשם מעל הקרקע, האחרונים לא ידעו להציב עליה את רגלם. אלו גם אלו, אם בייאושם ואם בקנאותם, הובילו את העם לפתחו של החורבן.</p> <p>צום תשעה באב מהווה תזכורת כואבת למחיר הכבד שמשלמת כל חברה על מחדלי מנהיגיה, ועל מחדליה שלה בבחירת המנהיגים. ביום זה נכרכות יחדיו המנהיגות שאיבדה את חזונה ואת דרכה והמנהיגות שעיניה סונוורו על ידי החזון ודרכה הסתיימה במבוי סתום. על פניו אולי נראה הדבר סתום, אך כריכתם של שני דפוסי המנהיגות מצביעה על היותם תגובת נגד זה לזה, אשר ההיחלצות ממנה מצריכה התבגרות לאומית.</p> <p>בתוך שלל הלקחים העולים מעברו של העם היהודי ומאסונותיו, מציעה מסורת הדורות גם את לקח המנהיגות – את הצורך בטיפוחה של הנהגה שאינה מרדדת את חיי היחיד הכלל בשם שיקולי רווח ונוחות ומתוך רפיון ידיים ואובדן דרך, אך בה בעת, גם אינה קלת דעת בהקרבתם על מזבח החזון היוקד או גרוע מכך על מזבח הותרת כסא</p>
