Color, grain texture and pattern, and surface finish of the stone are normal requirements. Durability (essentially based on mineral composition and hardness and past performance), strength, and the ability of the stone to take a polish are other important selection criteria. <p> Although a variety of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks are used as dimension stone, the principal rock types are granite, limestone, marble, sandstone, and slate. Other varieties of dimension stone that are normally considered to be special minor types include alabaster (massive gypsum), soapstone (massive talc), and various products fashioned from natural stone. </td> </tr> </table> <h2><img alt="*" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20091223080218im_/http://minerals.usgs.gov/images/greendot.gif" width="12" height="12" border="0"> <a name="pubs">Publications</a></h2> <p>If you are interested in receiving an email notice when a publication is added to this page, please refer to <a href="/web/20091223080218/http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/listservices.html">Minerals Information List Services</a>.</p> <p></p> <p>(To view or print a document in PDF format, download the free <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20091223080218/http://www.adobe.com/acrobat/readstep.html">Adobe Acrobat Reader</a>.) </p> <p></p> <p><strong>Annual Publications</strong></p> <p><a name="mcs"></a><a href="/web/20091223080218/http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/mcs/">Mineral Commodity Summaries</a></p> <ul> <li>Dimension Stone<br> PDF Format:<br> | <a href="stondmcs96.pdf">1996</a> | <a href="800397.pdf">1997</a> | <a href="800398.pdf">1998</a> | <a href="800399.pdf">1999</a> | <a href="800300.pdf">2000</a> | <a href="800301.pdf">2001</a> | <a href="800302.pdf">2002</a> | <a href="800303.pdf">2003</a> | <a href="sdimmcs04.pdf">2004</a> | <a href="stdimmcs05.pdf">2005</a> | <a href="stdimmcs06.pdf">2006</a> | <a href="stdimmcs07.pdf">2007</a> | <a href="mcs-2008-stond.pdf">2008</a> | <a href="mcs-2009-stond.pdf">2009</a> | <li> <a href="/web/20091223080218/http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/mcs/index.html#appendix">Appendixes</a></li> </ul> <p><a name="myb"></a><a href="/web/20091223080218/http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/commodity/myb/">Minerals Yearbook</a></p> <ul> <li>Dimension Stone<br> PDF Format:<br> | <a href="800494.pdf">1994</a> | <a href="800495.pdf">1995</a> | <a href="800496.pdf">1996</a> | <a href="800497.pdf">1997</a> | <a href="800498.pdf">1998</a> | <a href="800499.pdf">1999</a> | <a href="800400.pdf">2000</a> | <a href="dimsmyb01.pdf">2001</a> | <a href="dimstmyb02.pdf">2002</a> | <a href="dstonmyb03.pdf">2003</a> | <a href="dstonmyb04.pdf">2004</a> | <a href="dstonmyb05.pdf">2005</a> | <a href="myb1-2006-stond.pdf">2006</a> | <a href="myb1-2007-stond.pdf">2007</a> |<br> XLS Format:<br> | <a href="dimstmyb02.xls">2002</a> | <a href="dstonmyb03.xls">2003</a> | <a href="dstonmyb04.xls">2004</a> | <a href="dstonmyb05.xls">2005</a> | <a href="myb1-2006-stond.xls">2006</a> | <a href="myb1-2007-stond.xls">2007</a> | <li>Archive:<br> | <a href="/web/20091223080218/http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/usbmmyb.html">1932-1993</a> | </ul> <p><strong>Special Publications</strong></p> <ul> <!--<LI> <A HREF="800295.pdf">Directory of Principal Dimension Stone Producers in the United States in 1995</A>--> <li> <a name="history"></a><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20091223080218/http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/ds05-140/">Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities in the United States</a> (Data Series 140) <ul> <li> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20091223080218/http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/ds05-140/#dimstone">Dimension Stone</a> </ul> </ul> <p> <h2><img alt="*" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20091223080218im_/http://minerals.usgs.gov/images/greendot.gif"> <a name="contacts"></a>Contacts</h2> <ul> <li> <b>USGS Mineral Commodity Specialist</b><br> Thomas Dolley<br> Phone: 703-648-7710<br> Fax: 703-648-7975<br> Email: <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20091223080218/mailto:tdolley@usgs.gov">tdolley@usgs.gov</a><br> <br> <li><b>USGS Mineral Resource Specialist</b> <br> William H.
