Since the plants absorb carbon dioxide as they turn sunlight into energy, they influence how much carbon dioxide the oceans can soak up. Scientists who want to measure how much carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere and how much is absorbed by plants are interested in the connection between sea surface temperatures and ocean plant growth.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Most satellite sensors measure sea surface temperatures by observing infrared energy emitted by Earth&rsquo;s oceans, but infrared energy cannot pass through clouds. Because large areas of the Earth are cloud-covered each day, daily global maps of sea surface temperature from infrared-sensing satellite sensors are patchy. However, some frequencies of microwave radiation can pass through any clouds, allowing microwave instruments to map global sea surface temperatures every day. This microwave (MW) optimally-interpolated (OI) sea surface temperature dataset is designed to represent a foundation SST at a depth of ~1 meter, or temperatures just below the diurnal (upper) layer.<\/p>","DESC_ADV":"<p>This sea surface temperature (SST) dataset reflects the storage of thermal energy just below the diurnal mixed layer of the oceans. It is relevant as a potential indicator of global climate change, responding to long-term variations in total heat flux. Shorter-term variability, particularly that associated with the onset of El Ni&ntilde;o and La Ni&ntilde;a phases, also has significant ramifications. For example, the normally productive fisheries in the upwelling zones of the eastern Pacific experience dramatic declines in stocks during the warm El Ni&ntilde;o phase.
