Photograph: Dallas and John Heaton/© Free Agents Limited/CORBIS</p> </div> <p>One of the mysteries of being in Lucerne is why it's always non-Swiss composers who are inspired by the landscape here; Swiss musicians, for their part, seem to want to reject the conventional clichés of their country – mountains, glaciers, chocolate, watches – and write music that has little or nothing to do with the kind of nature worship you might expect from Alp-bound composers. It's telling that the theme of this year's festival in Lucerne is "nature", but Swiss composers make up only a small fraction of the programme. Mendelssohn's watercolour of Lucerne, painted in 1847</p> </div> <p>I'm in Lucerne this week for the <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.lucernefestival.ch/">Lucerne festival</a> (<a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/aug/08/life-in-music-claudio-abbado">Claudio Abbado</a>! Mahler 1 and 4! The Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.mahler-chamber.de/">Mahler Chamber Orchestra</a>! – not a bad line-up for the opening few days of a festival). It's all too easy to eulogise about Abbado's Mahler over the last few years here, and the cycle of symphonies he's been building up with his bespoke Lucerne Festival Orchestra since 2003. So I won't even try not to. These are concerts that change your world when they're happening, and the performances of Mahler's First Symphony that he and the orchestra have just played are experiences I'll never forget: music-making of cosmic joy and abandon that celebrated the unbelievable imagination and modernity of Mahler's music, composed and premiered before Gustav was even 30. Thankfully, these concerts will be preserved on DVD, and for anyone allergic to orchestral music on TV, the DVDs from Lucerne might just change your mind. Seeing the intensity and concentration of Abbado and his musicians only adds to the musical experience, and communicates the special atmosphere in the hall (<a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.intaktrec.ch/images/kkl-konzertsaal.jpg">the KKL</a>, a Jean Nouvel design, and one of the best acoustics in the world). Before I go off on a summer sojourn, here's A Taylor Kuffner's <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://gamelatron.com/video.php">Gamelatron</a>, which does pretty well exactly what you'd expect with a name like that: it's an entire Balinese orchestra that's played by 117 actuators, instead of musicians' hands, whose beaters, sticks, and blocks of wood are controlled by Kuffner's laptop. Photograph: Tom Service</p> </div> <p>This week, I have mostly been at the Royal Albert Hall, immersed in <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/2009/">Proms-land</a>. Some good things, too: Jonathan Harvey's celestial heterophony in his anthem Come, Holy Ghost, performed by the boys and men of the choirs of St John's and King's colleges in <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/2009/whatson/2207.shtml">Wednesday's Prom</a>; Judith Weir's brilliantly deft Ascending Into Heaven – sung by the same forces – whose effervescent organ part managed to make an image of cosmic transcendence sound as earthy as it was ethereal; and Saint-Saëns's Organ Symphony at the end of the same programme. (The more I hear that old warhorse, the more innovative I think it is. It contains some of the most sophisticated warping of musical time before Sibelius.) Photograph: Graeme Robertson</p> </div> <p><a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2004/mar/05/classicalmusicandopera1">Bernard Haitink</a>'s performance of Mahler's <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00lqycv/BBC_Proms_2009_Prom_05_Mahlers_9th_Symphony_20_07_2009/">Ninth Symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra</a> at the Albert Hall on Monday night was, as virtually everyone who was there or who heard it broadcast will tell you, one of the highlights of the musical year, and set the bar almost unassailably high for the rest of the Proms season. But despite the performance's brilliance, I think George Hall, a lone dissenter among the critics, is on to something in his review <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jul/21/proms-lso-haitink-bbc-singers-boyd"> today</a> when he says that for all the LSO's sonic sheen and Haitink's classical control, the performance missed a "sense of sheer extremity". A Proms insider said to me afterwards: "We might as well finish now!" Photograph: Ben Blackall/Stagetext</p> </div> <p>Charlotte Higgins reported last month that cellist Adrian Bradbury was <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jun/03/harrison-birtwhistle-wizard-of-oz">suing the Lowry in Salford</a> because having paid to take his family to see <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.peleproductions.org/">Pele Productions</a>' version of The Wizard of Oz, there were no live musicians, and the whole thing was performed to a backing track. As Charlotte said, <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/may/09/composers-room-harrison-birtwistle">Harrison Birtwistle</a> was called as an expert witness in the case, saying in his testimony that "without the orchestra or MD, a performance of The Wizard of Oz is best described as karaoke", rather than as the "most magical family musical of them all", in Pele Productions' words. In an astonishing victory for common sense, the judge agreed with Sir Harrison and Adrian, ordering the Lowry to refund the cost of Adrian's tickets, and his legal costs. Total cost? £194.50. Hadid has come up with a fabulous design, which will create a unique musical experience for those 192 lucky listeners who will have the chance to hear pianist <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jun/11/review-piotr-anderszewski">Piotr Anderszewski</a> inaugurate this lycra-clad, baguette-cleaned structure at the Manchester Art Gallery on Friday. But the idea of designing a space-within-a-space for a specific musical project is not a first for a major international architect. I've never understood how Spotify, that Alexandrian library of free music streaming on the net, can make money. It turns out, it can't. Yet. "It's taken a bit longer to get up to speed," Ek says, "but I consider that we've only just started [in February], and you can't build up the numbers in that time. Photograph: Murdo Macleod</p> </div> <p>A couple of remarkable string-playing reflections and refractions of Celtic traditions have come my way recently: first, Jordi Savall's <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20090825173629/http://www.alia-vox.com/cataleg.php?id=79">The Celtic Viol</a>. It's about as far from the Chieftains as you can get, but Savall on viol and Andrew Lawrence-King on small harp find an astonishing delicacy and sensitivity in tunes by Neil Gow, O'Carolan, and traditional numbers. </p><p>These are performances that both restore the melodies to the time of their composition and reveal their timeless strength and simplicity.
