They were known for their strict adherence to the Law of Moses and the oral traditions. This encounter takes place in Jerusalem, likely in the temple courts, where Jesus often taught. The Pharisees frequently challenged Jesus, questioning His authority and teachings. Their opposition is a recurring theme in the Gospels, highlighting the tension between Jesus and the religious leaders of His day.
“You are testifying about Yourself;
In Jewish legal tradition, a testimony needed to be corroborated by two or three witnesses to be considered valid (Deuteronomy 19:15). The Pharisees are appealing to this principle, suggesting that Jesus' self-testimony lacks credibility. This reflects their legalistic mindset and their unwillingness to accept Jesus' claims without external validation. Jesus' response in the following verses emphasizes His divine authority and the witness of the Father.
Your testimony is not valid.”
The Pharisees' assertion that Jesus' testimony is not valid is based on their interpretation of the law. However, Jesus' identity as the Son of God transcends human legal standards. In John 5:31-37, Jesus previously addressed the issue of testimony, citing the witness of John the Baptist, His works, the Father, and the Scriptures. This statement by the Pharisees sets the stage for Jesus to further reveal His divine nature and mission, challenging their understanding of truth and authority.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
Central figure in the passage, who is teaching in the temple courts and asserting His divine authority and identity.

2. The Pharisees
A religious group known for strict adherence to the Law of Moses. The Authorised version here, by a change of word, renders the connection less obvious than it really is. The Pharisees, standing probably in the front of the crowd listening to Him, bring a technical objection to His statement, and one which He had Himself admitted the force of. "According to your own words," they mean, "what you now say is not valid." They stand in the light of day, but demand a formal proof that the Sun has risen.

Pulpit Commentary
Verses 13-19. -
(2) The refusal of the Pharisees to accept this claim on his unsupported testimony, and Christ's reply. Verse 13. - The fact that the Pharisees respond shows that the circumstances of the previous day are changed. They have been the secret and organized opponents of Jesus throughout. The synoptic Gospels show with what perverse ingenuity and doggedness they followed him from place to place, venturing to assail him through his disciples, through his omissions of ritual, and by reason of his Divine freedom in interpreting the sacred Scripture; nor did they refrain from attributing his miracles to the power of the evil one (Matthew 9.). They were the nucleus of the bitter opposition to him current among the rulers in Jerusalem, and they reveal here a reminiscence of the discussion which had taken place in the temple or its neighbourhood after the healing of the impotent man (John 5:31, etc.).
