<A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The same came for a witness, that he might bear witness concerning the light, in order that all through him might believe. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>He was not the light, but came that he might bear witness concerning the light.<p> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>That was the true light, which lighteth every man, coming into the world. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But so many as received Him, to them gave He the right to become the children of God, to those believing on His name: <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>who were born not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.<p> <A name="15"></a><p class="hdg">The Word Became Flesh<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>The Word was made flesh, and tented among us (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten with the Father), full of grace and truth. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>John beareth witness concerning Him, and cried out saying; This is He of whom I spoke, He that cometh after me has been before me: <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>because He was my Creator. And of His fullness we all received grace upon grace. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Because the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>No one has ever seen God; the only begotten Son, the one being in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared him.<p> <A name="20"></a><p class="hdg">The Mission of John the Baptist<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/3.htm">Matthew 3:1–12</a>; <a href ="../mark/1.htm">Mark 1:1–8</a>; <a href ="../luke/3.htm">Luke 3:1–20</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>This is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, that they might ask him, <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Who art thou? and he confessed and denied not, and confessed that, I am not the Christ. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>They asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he says, I am not. Art thou that prophet? <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And he responded, No. Then they said to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those having sent us. What do you say concerning yourself? <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>I am the voice of one roaring in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord as Isaiah the prophet said.<p> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And those having been sent were of the Pharisees. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And they asked him, and said to him, Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor that prophet? <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>John responded to them, saying, I baptize with water: There standeth One in your midst whom you do not know, <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>the One coming after me, of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the latchet of His sandal. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.<p> <A name="30"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus the Lamb of God<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/3.htm#13">Matthew 3:13–17</a>; <a href ="../mark/1.htm#9">Mark 1:9–11</a>; <a href ="../luke/3.htm#21">Luke 3:21–22</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>On the following day he sees Jesus coming to him, and says, Behold the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>This is He concerning whom I spoke, A man cometh after me who has been before me: because he was my Creator. <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And I did not know Him, but in order that He may be made manifest to Israel, on this account I came baptizing with water. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And John testified saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and remained on Him. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And I did not know Him, but the One having sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, On whom you may see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, He is the one baptizing with the Holy Ghost. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And I have seen, and testified that He is the Son of God.<p> <A name="36"></a><p class="hdg">The First Disciples<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/4.htm#18">Matthew 4:18–22</a>; <a href ="../mark/1.htm#16">Mark 1:16–20</a>; <a href ="../luke/5.htm">Luke 5:1–11</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>On the following day John again stood, and two of his disciples, <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>and looking upon Jesus walking about, says, Behold, the Lamb of God. <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And the two disciples heard him speaking and followed Jesus. <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Jesus turning and seeing them following, says to them, <FR>What are you seeking?<Fr> and they said to Him, Doctor, (which is said, being interpreted, Teacher), where dwellest thou? <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>He says to them; <FR>Come and see.<Fr> Then they came and saw where He dwelleth, and they abode with Him that day: it was about the tenth hour. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two hearing from John, and follows Him; <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>he first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, We have found Messiah, which is being interpreted, Christ. <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>He led him to Jesus. Jesus looking upon him said; <FR>Thou art Simon the Son of Jonah, thou shalt be called Cephas<Fr> (which is interpreted, Peter).<p> <A name="44"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>On the following day he wished to depart into Galilee, and he finds Philip. And Jesus says to him; <FR>Follow me.<Fr> <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, We have found Him, of whom Moses and the prophets, in the law, did write, Jesus the son of Joseph, who is from Nazareth. <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>Nathanael said to him, Is any good thing able to come out of Nazareth? Philip says to him, Come and see. <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and says concerning him, <FR>Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.<Fr> <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/1-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>Nathanael says to Him, Whence do you know me?
