In the Old Testament, Sheol is often understood as the realm of the dead, a place of darkness and separation from the living. The psalmist expresses confidence that God will not leave him in this state, indicating a belief in deliverance and possibly an early understanding of resurrection. This assurance is echoed in the New Testament, where Peter and Paul cite this verse in Acts 2:27 and Acts 13:35, respectively, applying it to Jesus Christ's resurrection. The psalmist's hope in God's deliverance prefigures the ultimate victory over death achieved through Christ.
nor will You let Your Holy One see decay
The term "Holy One" is significant, as it denotes someone set apart for God's purposes. In the immediate context, it refers to David, the psalmist, who trusts that God will preserve him. However, this phrase is also seen as a messianic prophecy, pointing to Jesus Christ. Unlike David, who eventually died and was buried, Jesus was resurrected before His body could undergo decay, fulfilling this scripture. This prophetic aspect is highlighted in the New Testament, reinforcing the belief in Jesus as the Messiah who conquers death. The concept of not seeing decay underscores the power of God to preserve life and His ultimate plan for redemption through Christ.
Persons / Places / Events
1. David
The author of Psalm 16, King David, is expressing his trust in God's protection and provision, both in life and in death.

2. Sheol
In Hebrew thought, Sheol is the realm of the dead, a place of darkness and separation from the living.

3. Holy One
This term is often understood as a reference to the Messiah, Jesus Christ, in Christian theology, who is seen as the ultimate fulfillment of this prophecy.
Teaching Points
Trust in God's Faithfulness
Just as David trusted God not to abandon him, we can trust in God's faithfulness to us in all circumstances, including life after death.

Hope in Resurrection
This verse points to the hope of resurrection, as seen in Jesus Christ, assuring believers of eternal life.

Messianic Prophecy
Recognize the prophetic nature of this verse, which finds its fulfillment in Jesus, affirming the reliability of Scripture.

Victory Over Death
Embrace the victory over death that is promised through Christ, encouraging believers to live with confidence and purpose.

Personal Assurance
Reflect on the personal assurance that God will not abandon us, providing comfort and strength in times of fear or uncertainty.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Psalm 16

How do Sheol, Hades, Hell, lake of fire, Paradise, and Abraham's bosom differ?

How does hell appear?

What is the Jewish belief about the afterlife?

What does the Bible say about Limbo?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(10) Leave.--Rather, commit, or give up.
In hell.--Better, to the unseen world (Sheol), as in Psalm 6:5, where see Note.
Holy One.--Better, thy chosen, or favoured, or beloved One. Heb., chasid, which, starting from the idea of one standing in a state of covenant favour with Jehovah, gathers naturally, to this passive sense, an active one of living conformably to such a state; "gracious" as well as "graced," "blessing" as well as "blessed;" and so generally as in Authorised Version, "saint," "holy" (see Psalm 4:3; Psalm 145:17, and especially Psalm 1:5, "My saints, those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.") Job hopes that he may not always remain in Hades, but may one day experience a "change" or "renewal" (Job 14:14); David is certain that his soul will not be left in hell. Hell (Sheol) is to him an "intermediate state," through which a man passes between his life in this world and his final condition in some blest abode. Neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. The translation of shachath (שָׁחַת) by "corruption" has been questioned, and it has been rendered "the pit," or "the grave," but quite gratuitously. The LXX. have διαφθορὰν as the equivalent; and the rabbinical commentators, giving it the same meaning, but expounding it of David, invented the myth that David's body was miraculously preserved from corruption.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
For
כִּ֤י ׀ (kî)
Conjunction
Strong's 3588: A relative conjunction

You will not
לֹא־ (lō-)
Adverb -
