Having taken up the upright bass at the age of 15, he turned professional right out of school, establishing his reputation through work with jazz luminaries such as <a href="/people/677/000026599/">Dizzy Gillespie</a> and <a href="/people/703/000086445/">Freddie Hubbard</a>. In 1965 he became a founding member of The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and began playing in <a href="/people/499/000086241/">Muhal Richard Abrams</a>' <a href="/music/525/000042399/">The Experimental Band</a>. This led ultimately to his decades of activity in the Art Ensemble.<p> As with all of his Ensemble compatriots, Favors kept an active career outside of its confines.
