Biblically, the triumph of the righteous is often associated with God's favor and blessing. In the Old Testament, figures like David and Solomon experienced periods of triumph that brought glory to Israel, reflecting God's covenant promises. The concept of "great glory" can be linked to the idea of God's glory being manifested through His people, as seen in passages like Isaiah 60:1-3, where the glory of the Lord rises upon His people, drawing nations to His light. The triumph of the righteous is not just a personal victory but a communal one, bringing peace and prosperity to the land, as seen in Proverbs 11:10.
but when the wicked rise, men hide themselves
This part of the verse contrasts the previous statement by illustrating the fear and oppression that occur when the wicked gain power. Historically, the rise of wicked rulers in Israel, such as Ahab and Manasseh, led to periods of idolatry, injustice, and suffering. The phrase "men hide themselves" suggests a time of danger and persecution, where people seek refuge from the tyranny of the wicked. This is reminiscent of the times of the judges, where Israel experienced cycles of oppression due to their disobedience (Judges 6:2). Theologically, this reflects the broader biblical theme of the struggle between good and evil, and the ultimate hope for deliverance through God's intervention, as seen in prophecies like Daniel 12:1, where deliverance comes for those who are wise and righteous.
Persons / Places / Events
1. The Righteous
Those who live in accordance with God's laws and principles, seeking to honor Him in their actions and decisions.

2. The Wicked
Individuals who act in opposition to God's commands, often causing harm and injustice.

3. Triumph of the Righteous
A situation where those who are righteous experience success or victory, leading to a positive impact on society.

4. Rise of the Wicked
A scenario where those who are wicked gain power or influence, resulting in fear and oppression.

5. Men Hiding
The reaction of people when the wicked are in power, indicating fear and a desire to avoid confrontation or harm.
Teaching Points
The Impact of Righteous Leadership
Righteous leaders bring about positive change and glory, creating an environment where people can thrive.

The Consequences of Wickedness
When wicked individuals gain power, it leads to fear and oppression, causing people to withdraw and hide.

The Role of the Community
The community's response to leadership reflects the moral and spiritual climate; support righteous leaders and resist wickedness.

God's Justice and Timing
Trust in God's ultimate justice, knowing that He will exalt the righteous and bring down the wicked in His perfect timing.

Personal Responsibility
Each believer is called to live righteously, contributing to the triumph of good over evil in their sphere of influence.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Proverbs 28

Why does “when the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding” (Proverbs 28:12) conflict with historical examples where oppressed individuals publicly resist unjust rulers?

What does the Bible say about good and evil?

Psalm 73:3 says the wicked prosper, yet other passages (e.g., Psalm 1:3) promise prosperity for the righteous--how do we reconcile this contradiction?

Luke 10:19 - If authority over snakes and scorpions was literal, why isn't there consistent historical evidence of Christians demonstrating this without harm?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(12) When righteous men do rejoice--i.e., prosper, or triumph.
There is great glory.--Men rejoice, and array themselves in their gayest attire.
A man is hidden.--Literally, is sought for. They hide themselves for fear (comp. Proverbs 28:28), and must be sought for, in order to be found.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 12. - When righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory (comp. Proverbs 29:2; Proverbs 11:10). "Rejoice," rather triumph, as conquerors, right prevailing and wickedness being overcome. Then there is great show of joy, and, as the expression implies, men put on their festal garments to do honorer to the occasion: See the description of Solomon's time (1 Kings 4:20, 25). If we take this verse in connection with ver. 2, we may see in it the triumph of order after a period of confusion and anarchy. Septuagint, "Through the help of righteous men great glory arises." But when the wicked rise, a man is hidden (comp. ver. 28, where, however, the verb is different). The Authorized Version m, one that when the wicked rise to power, people have to hide themselves in order to escape danger to life and property. The verb is more literally rendered, "are searched for," i.e. they have betaken themselves to hiding places, and have to be looked for; they fear oppression and injury, and venture no longer into the streets and open places. Vulgate,Regnantibus impiis ruinae hominum, "When evil men are m power, there is general ruin;" Septuagint, "In the places of the ungodly men are caught." Other interpretations of the proverb have been suggested, though none is so satisfactory as that given above. Thus some take the searching out to mean testing, in the sense that evil times try men's characters, and bring out their true nature (1 Corinthians 11:19). Others explain that, under the reign of the impious, men do not come forward to take part in public affairs, but retire sullenly into private life.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
When the righteous
צַ֭דִּיקִים (ṣad·dî·qîm)
Adjective - masculine plural
Strong's 6662: Just, righteous

triumph,
בַּעֲלֹ֣ץ (ba·‘ă·lōṣ)
Preposition-b | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct
Strong's 5970: To jump for, joy, exult

there is great
רַבָּ֣ה (rab·bāh)
Adjective - feminine singular
Strong's 7227: Much, many, great

glory,
תִפְאָ֑רֶת (ṯip̄·’ā·reṯ)
Noun - feminine singular
Strong's 8597: Beauty, glory

but when the wicked
רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים (rə·šā·‘îm)
Adjective - masculine plural
Strong's 7563: Wrong, an, bad person

rise,
וּבְק֥וּם (ū·ḇə·qūm)
Conjunctive waw, Preposition-b | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct
Strong's 6965: To arise, stand up, stand

men
אָדָֽם׃ (’ā·ḏām)
Noun - masculine singular
Strong's 120: Ruddy, a human being

hide themselves.
יְחֻפַּ֥שׂ (yə·ḥup·paś)
Verb - Pual - Imperfect - third person masculine singular
Strong's 2664: To seek, to conceal oneself, mask

Links
Proverbs 28:12 NIV
Proverbs 28:12 NLT
Proverbs 28:12 ESV
Proverbs 28:12 NASB
Proverbs 28:12 KJV

Proverbs 28:12 BibleApps.com
Proverbs 28:12 Biblia Paralela
Proverbs 28:12 Chinese Bible
Proverbs 28:12 French Bible
Proverbs 28:12 Catholic Bible

OT Poetry: Proverbs 28:12 When the righteous triumph there is great (Prov.
