His grandson, Gordon Basstone, has kindly sent us this appreciation of Jack.<p>'My grandfather was a wharf labourer in 1939 in Southampton until he was called up for duty. His wife, who had been christened Violet Elizabeth but who chose to use Elizabeth as her first name, had been born on 9th September 1918. She married Jack in Southampton, where they had four children: Thomas (my father) 1936-2019, Joyce, Violet and Maureen. Elizabeth did not long outlive her husband Jack. She contracted tuberculosis and passed late that same year, on 29th December 1941. It has always been believed in my family that she died of a broken heart.<p> 'After the tragic loss of both parents, my father and his sisters were shipped around the country from one foster home to the next. My Dad did not like to talk about any of this.'<p>Jack Basstone was 26 years old at the time of his loss.<br /><hr width='50%' size='1' /><div align='center'></div><div align='center'><br /><span class='h3mem'>Additional Photographs</span><br />None at this time.<br /><br /><hr width='50%' size='1' /></table><hr width='50%' size='1' /></div><br clear='all' /><div align='center'><br /><br /><b><a href='http://www.hmshood.org.uk/crew/database/MemorialsDetail.php?RecNo=33'>Hood Chapel, Church of St. John the Baptist, Boldre, Hampshire, England</a></b><br /><br /><b>Photos of the memorial</b><br /><br /><img src='http://www.hmshood.org.uk/crew/memorial/boldre/IMG_2937.JPG' /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><hr width='50%' size='1' /><br /><br /><b><a href='http://www.hmshood.org.uk/crew/database/MemorialsDetail.php?RecNo=65'>Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Southsea, Hampshire, England</a></b><br /><br /><b>Photos of the memorial</b><br /><br /><img src='http://www.hmshood.org.uk/crew/memorial/southsea/SouthseaHoodPanels.jpg' width='500' width='750' /><br /><br />The part of the memorial in which the Hood casualty names can be found.<br />(Panels 45 to 61)<br /><br /><br /><br /><img src='http://www.hmshood.org.uk/crew/memorial/southsea/58.jpg' width='500' width='841' /><br /><br />Jack's name is in Column 3 of Panel 58.<br /><br /><br /><br /><img src='http://www.hmshood.org.uk/crew/memorial/southsea/IMG_2146.JPG' width='400' width='355' /><br /><br />Detail of Jack's name.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><hr width='50%' size='1' /></div><div align='center'><br /><span class='h3mem'>Sources</span><br /><a href='https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/' target='_blank'>Commonwealth War Graves Commission</a><br />'Register of Deaths of Naval Ratings' (data extracted by Director of Naval Personnel (Disclosure Cell), Navy Command HQ, 2009)<br />His grandson, Gordon Basstone (photo, December 2007)<br /><br /><br /></div></div> <!--Start of footer--> <script type="text/javascript" src="/cssjava/footer.js"></script> <!--End of footer--> </div> <!-- End of wrapper --> </body> </html>
