his players is unmatched among NBA coaches. No wonder why every current or future NBA player is dying to play for the Jazz! (sigh). <br>It's one thing to point out the lack of defense and berate players within the Jazz, but the questions Sloan fail to answer to the public are as follow:<br>1. What does he, as a coach do about it? He should tell what defensive scheme(s) he teaches that players fail to execute.<br>2.Does he study the players prior to signing them to a contract? If so, how then can't he not know the defensive strength or weakness of a potential signee?(Popovich wields a lot of power in selecting or rejecting current or future San Antonio players),so what does Sloan do? Assuming because someone can play in a league then he should also know how to defend is simply his hyperbolic opinion, but is way far from reality. Is Sloan wrong? The numbers certainly prove his point, don't ya think? Referring to your #1 point, perhaps it is his fault for not teaching the players to get in front of their man(haha!) Buddy, they are in the NBA making millions! They are supposedly the best of the best and in my "humble" opinion they should no this stuff already. Sloan can only teach so much, at this point they should be doing stuff on their own. Sloan job is to understand the other team and then put together a line up that can compete and best their opponent. BTW, regarding your #2 point, that is not only Sloans fault...there is a large team of scouts, etc that determine players abilities to make it at the next level. I will agree, the success and failure of the team falls on Sloans shoulders, however, I am so tired of hearing people stick up for the cry baby overpaid players. Sloan has issues, no doubt, but he is a great coach and knows basketball. I have never grown significantly with a teacher who was both demanding and demeaning. <br><br>Coaches, especially well paid ones who are long-time tenured should demonstrate the skill to demand maximum from the player with out personalized belittlement (if that is a word). <br><br>Human performance always improves when skills, talents, and abilities are recognized, valued, and appreciated. This does not mean a player can not be criticized, nor does it mean peak performance can not be expected. Criticism is a delicate and important skill, developed carefully with years of experience. <br><br>Sloan is paid millions, I think we should expect more from him. How does his salary compare to the assistant coaches, the trainer and scouts. (This is kind of irrelevant to the issue at hand, but a comparison none the less).<br><br>Sloan has brought 20 years worth of entertainment to Utah. I'd trust what he's saying. The next time you're at a game watch Sloan when the team is on offense and then watch him when they're on offense. He sits on offense and stands as if he's playing and willing them to do what he wants on defense. Defense is his passion and I'm pretty sure that's what he harps on in practice. I bet if you asked NBA coaches to list the top 3 coaches in the leauge he would be on that list. He is old school and I love it. It's the players that needs to step up and change, Sloan has actually adapted his game and the Jazz style. He has give them some freedom to get out and run more. The players have not stepped to the plate though. They are a bunch of over paid whinners with tons of athletic talent and all they think about is scoring. The spurs and the pistons have proved over the last decade that to win and NBA title one must defend as individuals and as a team. The jazz are capable, they just need to respond and do it. <br><br>If there is one thing I wished Sloan would do, it would be play Millsap more. He is one guy that is hungry to play defense. Sloan is a great coach, we should feel fortunate to have him. Is he perfect? In a "blue collar" state (Utah) I can appreciate hard work, but I just don't think that the communication with the Jazz and team morale is where it really should be.<br>Until I hear Sloan ever take responsibility, it just all seems one sided. He has a history of ripping players with his coaching style and I think that is unprofessional. It seems like he just takes the negative and doesn't speak of the positive.<br>If he wants "old school" back or the old team he used to coach, fine. He should just settle for the fact, however, that that team has never nor would have ever won a championship. The game has evolved to something entirely different. He shouldn't tell the media what his team's problem is. He should tell them in practice. He needs to remember too, that his new team is young, not a bunch of old guys like he had in the Stockton to Malone days. Jazz could get a defensive two by trading or drafting. I cannot understand why Sloan need to talk to the press, not to the players personally? Trading young talent for Mutombo, who is over 40, or Mourning, who is pushing 40? These guys were playing in college when Millsap was born. This is the last year in the league for both of them, and it should be. They are old bones, and I wouldn't trade away two more good and healthy years of Millsap for 60 games of a James Donaldson type. Also, if you remember who James Donaldson is, you are old. The team wins, or at the least plays it's best. <br><br>A coach has to earn his money as much as the player. The coach has to be at his peak in teaching / coaching if he is to expect the player to give in similar fashion. <br><br>Sloan has a nice challenge. It will be interesting to see if he can meet the challenge. The Jazz players are full of talent, and mostly offense oriented. The Jazz have a major range in salaries, although all seen huge to me. There are limited minutes available during a game. <br><br>Few of us are peak performers every day. Some players give their best every game. <br><br>Sloan should demand peak from players. I think he has to teach and relate to players in a way to empower each to give all, accept his role, and give best effort.
