This paper first describes Gould\u0026amp;#39;s seven arguments against evolutionary progress, i.e., the human arrogance argument, anthropocentric argument, no inner thrust argument, no biological base argument, extreme contingency argument, statistical error argument, and bacteria (other than human beings) ruling the earth argument. Gould\u0026amp;#39;s arguments against evolutionary progress have great influence in contemporary evolutionary theory. Thus, it is necessary to conduct a careful philosophical analysis of each of Gould\u0026amp;#39;s arguments to reveal his philosophical mistakes. According to Gould, 'progress' is a noxious notion that deserves to be expunged from evolutionary biology. In Dawkins' view, on the other hand, progress is one of the most important, pervasive and inevitable aspects of evolution. Simple appeals to 'the evidence' are clearly insufficient to resolve this disagreement, since it is precisely the interpretation of the evidence that is in dispute. Scientific controversies in general, and the Dawkins/Gould dispute over evolutionary progress in particular, are worth examining in some detail because doing so sheds light on the interconnected roles of methodological and contextual factors in the formation, articulation and defense of scientific claims. My aim in this paper is to clarify the structure of the Dawkins/Gould dispute by analyzing it in terms of a tri-level model of scientific controversies, involving 'top-level' substantive disagreements, 'middlelevel' methodological differences, and 'bottom-level' differences in historical and social factors. While Gould argued that evolution is essentially a contingent process whose outcomes are unpredictable, Conway Morris claimed that the omnipresence of convergence testifies that it is in fact deterministic, leading to predictable and inevitable outcomes. Their theses have been extensively researched from various perspectives. However, a systematic parallel analysis of the core arguments each of them offered in support of their thesis has been lacking. I argue Conway Morris has successfully exposed the core weaknesses of Gould’s thesis and offered a comprehensive account in favor of the major role of convergence in evolutionary history. On the other hand, I will point out some of the weak points in the latter’s arguments supporting the deterministic view of life’s evolution. Although Conway Morris has been more successful in arguing for the deterministic nature of the evolutionary processes, both theses could be improved if their shortcomings are taken into selection. Here we explore how and why Gould's ideas on concepts related to species selection evolved over 30 years, from the punctuated equilibria paper of 1972 to his ''Structure of Evolutionary Theory'' magnum opus published in 2002. Throughout his career his ideas on species selection shifted between three phases. Initially, Gould favored a definition of species selection that was more descriptive. Later, he came to distinguish between species sorting, which he called species selection in the broad sense, and true species selection, which is tied to the concept of specieslevel aptations. Finally, he came to view species selection in a broader, more inclusive way, effectively merging the two earlier viewpoints. His ideas on species selection changed over the years because he was trying to square his views on complex concepts like adaptation, natural selection, emergence, and the independence of macroevolutionary theory. But it is also evident, if you take a deeper look into the details, that a constructive process of such magnitude could not be accomplished by destructive principles like Darwin’s “war of nature” and “battle of life”. The pivotal element, the secret of success of nature, was and is cooperation – on all levels of being. Darwin’s hypothesis (as he himself called it) starts from a wrong basic assumption, describes a process of species change that is inconsistent with logic and to date still unproven, even if it is always claimed to be. And the Neo-Darwinian view that has replaced Darwin’s original concept is a totally watered-down surrogate of the origin, a deceptive package so to say, be-cause it has dismissed the basic assumptions of the author. And also, it becomes clear for an attentive observer, that the vast variety of beauty, ecological brightness, ingenious inventions and sustainable systems of nature cannot be explained just by random mutations, natural selection, chance and need. There must be assumed an overwhelming creative intelligence behind every component of the universe, from subatomic particles to gigantic galaxy clusters. This was not only advocated by philosophers or theologians but also by prestigious natural scientists like Max Planck and Al-bert Einstein, the latter admitting that he was a supporter of pantheism, meaning that every-thing is out of God and within God as an aspect of the divine. This is especially true of the prodigious output and unique career of Stephen Jay Gould. Thus, it is perhaps predictable that his output-hundreds of papers and articles, many widely read and cited books-would be reviewed so unevenly in this new book. In 200 pages, the authors succeed in identifying Gould's most important contributions to scholarship, but they fail to give many of his ideas the evaluation and review they deserve. The strength of so many of the concepts and ideas proposed by Gould and his colleagues is that they have been tested so extensively, and often corroborated or fine-tuned. It seems appropriate to review them periodically to see how well they are holding up. It is also likely that future decades will require Gould's research, popular musings, and deep theorizing to be reassessed occasionally, as has been the case for other luminaries of evolutionary biology. Kelley et al.'s compendium [1] shared a purpose with the present book, and no doubt there will be future Gould reviews. The book under review represents the proceedings of a meeting held at the Instituto Veneto during early May 2012 to memorialize the tenth anniversary of Gould's death. There are four sections in the book, each quite different. Some chapters review parts of Gould's legacy, whereas others barely acknowledge his work or are extensions of his ideas. The chapters also vary in clarity; some are well written and interesting, and others suffer from poor editing and difficult post-modernist logorrhea. I found the first two parts more familiar and more interesting than the last two. Part I, composed of three chapters, is devoted to evolutionary theory and highlights three of Gould's best-known contributions: punctuated equilibria; spandrels and exaptation; and his last great work, devoted to a pluralistic reworking of evolutionary theory. Niles Eldredge, Gould's co-author on punctuated equilibria, recounts a familiar story central to his own career. It is an engagingly written chapter, leaves the reader with the feeling that it has been told many times, and gives the impression that he is growing weary of the re-telling. One can hardly blame Eldredge, especially when he must revisit the loss of a friend with each repetition.
