This conflict is notable for its divine mandate, its execution by the Israelites under Moses' leadership, and its theological implications within the narrative of Israel's journey to the Promised Land.<br><br><b>Background and Divine Command</b><br><br>The Midianites were a nomadic people who had previously interacted with the Israelites. The conflict with Midian arose after the incident at Peor, where the Israelites were led into idolatry and immorality through the influence of Midianite women, as described in <a href="/bsb/numbers/25.htm">Numbers 25</a>. The campaign was thorough, resulting in the death of the five kings of Midian and the prophet Balaam, who had previously attempted to curse Israel (<a href="/numbers/31-8.htm">Numbers 31:8</a>).<br><br><b>Aftermath and Division of Spoils</b><br><br>Following the victory, the Israelites captured the women, children, livestock, and goods of the Midianites. However, Moses was angered by the survival of the Midianite women, who had been instrumental in leading Israel into sin.
