You have a long journey of writing ahead of you.” Krilow says it made her feel really good to know she wasn’t alone, that she could practice her craft with this kind of support. This is one of the biggest benefits of Audible’s inaugural Indigenous Writers’ Circle (IWC) program in Canada, which pairs emerging First Nations, Inuit, and Métis writers with Indigenous mentors in order to help clear a path to success.

Krilow, who is Métis, was one of 15 writers accepted to the program and then paired with a mentor who could offer advice on everything from craft to publishing, all from an Indigenous perspective. Krilow’s mentor is Tanya Talaga, who is Ojibwe with roots in Fort William First Nation, and who wrote the bestseller Seven Fallen Feathers and the Audible Original podcast Seven Truths. “It’s important that we offer a hand to other First Nations, Métis, and Inuit writers who want to tell their stories and give them a chance to do so,” says Talaga. “When we were younger, we didn’t have mentors like this; I don’t remember a program like this.”

<img src="//images.ctfassets.net/3sa0209epr53/6GTo15HoEnjWnjuvCqNplP/2f5f97c561404e374b88bccdfc3cd9c3/Screenshot_Samantha_.png?w=720" alt="Indigenous Writers' Circle mentee Samantha Krilow is shown in news footage of an interview with her at home talking to the reporter via video. In addition to giving writers feedback on drafts, IWC mentors advise on submitting work to literary journals, agents, and publishers, and connect writers with their networks.

That’s what happened for Martin John, a Dalkelh writer from the Tl'azt'en Nation. His mentor, Richard Van Camp (who is a Tłı̨chǫ writer of the Dene nation), not only encouraged John to finish a novel and a screenplay, but set him up with an agent. Now he has a publishing deal. “I feel as a mid-career author, it's really my time to give back,” says Van Camp, who has authored 26 books in just about every genre, including The Lesser Blessed produced by Audible, and has had several of his works adapted for film.

The value of working with IWC mentors goes even further. When she applied, one of Krilow’s goals was to learn how to incorporate her identity into her writing. Working with Talaga, she says, “helped me get in touch with Métis oral traditions and weave them into my storytelling.” As she delved into those stories, Krilow discovered something transformative. “Many of them are my ancestors! I feel like I'm part of something larger than myself when I engage with Métis traditions.”

This intersection between craft and culture is also what Jaymie Campbell was looking for when she applied to the IWC. Campbell is Anishinaabe from Curve Lake First Nation in Ontario. She says her mentor “encouraged me to be brave and step outside my comfort zone,” and to use her authentic voice, “to write as an Indigenous writer and not try to change it.” For example, Campbell was taught that historically in her language there was no distinction between "animate" or "inanimate" when referring to the land, and exploring this lack of distinction in our relationship to the land influences her stories.

For some, the IWC has been a way back to a heritage they were denied altogether. Corri Daniels is Plains Cree from George Gordon First Nation in Treaty 4 territory north of Regina, Saskatchewan, but she was raised by non-Indigenous parents in Calgary, Alberta. Daniels is a survivor of the Sixties Scoop, a decades-long oppressive program that removed Indigenous children from their homes, often without the consent of their families, and placed them with mostly Euro-Canadian families. Many times, children were raised not knowing their true identities until later. Says Daniels, “I didn't grow up with oral storytelling because I didn't grow up in my culture. I didn't grow up hearing stories from my grandmothers or grandfathers.” As she works with her IWC mentor, Daniels is finding her voice as an Indigenous storyteller. “It's our responsibility to learn the stories and pass them on,” she says. “For so long, we were silenced, so to be able to do this is a gift. And it's our right.”

“It’s vital that the world hears from more Indigenous storytellers,” says Georgia Knox, the country manager for Audible’s service for Canada. “We are honored and excited to continue to grow the Indigenous Writers' Circle, as well as support its incredibly talented alumni into the future.” Applications are currently open through May 31, 2022, for the next cohort of writers.

That this is only the beginning is something Van Camp wants the writers to know, as well. “I believe I'm speaking for all the mentors and everybody at Audible,” he says, “that our genuine wish for the writers who have entrusted us with their time and their dreams is that they feel welcomed into this huge, beautiful Indigenous community of writers and storytellers, and that they know they have us for life.”

Related

Impact

ImpactFebruary 15, 2022
Future Voices: Newark Interns Learn to Make Their First Podcasts at Audible

During their paid internships with Audible, Newark high school students learned how to write, record, and edit their own podcasts, and in the process learned the power of their voices and stories.
February 15, 2022

Impact

ImpactOctober 1, 2021
Audible’s Shuttle Drivers Join Our Food Relief Effort

When the pandemic caused companies to shift to remote work, Karen Gajda’s van business shuttling Audible and other employees around Newark was forced to adjust. In addition to giving writers feedback on drafts, IWC mentors advise on submitting work to literary journals, agents, and publishers, and connect writers with their networks.

That’s what happened for Martin John, a Dalkelh writer from the Tl'azt'en Nation. His mentor, [Richard Van Camp]( https://www.audible.com/search?keywords=richard+van+camp&ref-override=a_pd_Seven-_t1_header_search&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_14&k=richard+van+camp&crid=1KV4A6EAYG2BR&sprefix=richard+van+ca%2Cna-audible-us%2C28&i=na-audible-us&url=search-alias%3Dna-audible-us) (who is a Tłı̨chǫ writer of the Dene nation), not only encouraged John to finish a novel and a screenplay, but set him up with an agent. Now he has a publishing deal. “I feel as a mid-career author, it's really my time to give back,” says Van Camp, who has authored 26 books in just about every genre, including [*The Lesser Blessed*]( https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Lesser-Blessed-Audiobook/B00BR345C8) produced by Audible, and has had several of his works adapted for film.

Daniels is a survivor of the [Sixties Scoop]( https://indigenousfoundations.arts.ubc.ca/sixties_scoop/), a decades-long oppressive program that removed Indigenous children from their homes, often without the consent of their families, and placed them with mostly Euro-Canadian families.

“We are honored and excited to continue to grow the Indigenous Writers' Circle, as well as support its incredibly talented alumni into the future.” [Applications are currently open]( https://www.audible.ca/ep/mtiwctest?jumpTo=center-5&ipRedirectOverride=true&overrideBaseCountry=true&pf_rd_p=fd2675e1-5075-4c05-b564-b6dd3a393128&pf_rd_r=6128PMGN9M37QGHBE3PS) through May 31, 2022, for the next cohort of writers.

During their paid internships with Audible, Newark high school students learned how to write, record, and edit their own podcasts, and in the process learned the power of their voices and stories.
Three Audible high school interns are shown in a side-by-side montage, each working on creating and recording their podcasts. Now Aimunmondion just had to come up with a good subject. She decided to use the opportunity to learn more about her Nigerian roots, delving into Nigeria’s rich history, political struggles, and civil war. She invited her grandfather to share his experience and discuss how the country’s turbulent past has affected its present, and what can be done to create a brighter future. The resulting podcast, *Breaking Dawn*, which Aimunmondian presented at the end of her internship, is informative and engrossing, melding documentary and memoir through Nigerian music and voices.

In spite of having to schedule interviews across time zones and editing so much her fingers cramped up, Aimunmondion says that the hours spent researching Nigeria’s history and talking with her grandfather made it all worthwhile. “It taught me a lot about the history of my country,” she said.

Audible’s paid internship for [Newark high school students](https://www.audible.com/about/impact/future-leaders) has been offered for 14 years as part of the company’s mission to cultivate the city’s next generation of leaders. In October 2020, Audible piloted a new program within the internship, teaching a remote 12-week podcasting masterclass to a small group of students from Newark’s North Star Academy, including Aimunmondion.

The addition of a podcasting masterclass exposes interns to another of Audible’s core missions, which is to create a [diverse talent pipeline](https://www.audible.com/about/impact/amplify-voices) for creatives of all types in the audio industry. This effort includes providing workshops, training, and mentoring in acting and writing as well as sound engineering and production in the US, the UK, Australia, and Germany.

Equipped with gear from Audible Studios, the interns took part in employee-led tutorials that focused on different aspects of the process, from pitching an idea to writing, editing, and recording, through post-production, marketing, and promotion. Rebecca Takyi, an intern on the content team, knew she wanted her podcast to be about the arts. Brainstorming with mentor Emilia LaPenta, a senior producer for Audible Theater, she decided to bring in her older sister for a deep-dive into the legacy of artists across generations and the importance of exploring music beyond one’s generational scope. In *Naming Greatness*, the multi-generational siblings discussed the cultural, political, and artistic impact of icons from different decades, from Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin to Lauryn Hill and Mariah Carey to Beyoncé.

“The process was very long, but fun,” Takyi told her peers and instructors. “The outcome was phenomenal. I was proud of myself.”

LaPenta points out that, just as the students benefit from the opportunity to learn audio storytelling, the landscape itself benefits from their ideas and voices. “They came to the program with fresh insights and imaginative concepts, pushing the form forward with their unique perspectives and innovations,” she says.

Mental health was the subject of more than one podcast. Michael Torto, also an intern on the content team, explored mental health in the face of racial injustice and Covid-19. For *Our Voices, Our Story, Our Experience*, he invited a fellow North Star student to discuss coping with the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor against the backdrop of the pandemic, and how it may be affecting the mental health of younger generations.

Similarly, Edna Agyemang brought in a friend for her podcast, *It Had To Be Said*, to discuss mental health in the context of the dangers of beauty standards. The result is a high-energy, conversational deep dive into colorism, “pretty privilege,” and the influencer culture encountered on digital platforms like TikTok. Agyemang reported that the editing process helped her get over the discomfort of hearing herself in a recording.

Even though she wasn’t a podcast listener before, Aimunmondion is already planning future episodes of *Breaking Dawn*. Dave Blum, editor-in-chief of Audible Originals, is glad to hear that. “I really hope you keep doing this,” he told the group during their final meeting. “We need you in the audio space.”

When the pandemic caused companies to shift to remote work, Karen Gajda’s van business shuttling Audible and other employees around Newark was forced to adjust. Covid-19 was forcing offices and college campuses everywhere to close, sending employees and students home and slowing transportation hub traffic to a trickle. Overnight, Gajda’s van business, which relied largely on shuttling commuters between the airport, train station, office buildings and campuses around Newark, fell by about 75%. “My immediate concern was for my employees,” she says, including 33 drivers Gajda says are “like my kids.” With the slowdown in business, she was going to have to furlough many of them.

Gajda’s longtime lead dispatcher and manager, Benjamin Stoudt, broke the news to the drivers, one by one. “It made my heart drop,” Stoudt says.
One of those drivers was Edward Green, a familiar face to Audible employees who rode the shuttle between Newark Penn Station and Audible’s headquarters every morning and evening, five days a week. Green had been driving those shifts for three years, so when Stoudt told him that Audible was sending employees home for the foreseeable future, “I was really worried,” he says.

Audible’s Director of Facilities, Brian Mullen, was in regular communication with Gajda from the beginning. “Nobody knew what Covid was yet, or what the impact was going to be,” he explains. “At first we thought we’d just pause service, but it looked like we were going to be closed a lot longer and \\[we] wanted to understand the impact this would have on her business and the drivers.”

As it happens, Mullen was part of the early planning stages of a relief effort that Audible was launching. [Newark Working Kitchens (NWK)](https://www.newarkworkingkitchens.com/) would activate local restaurants to prepare food for vulnerable residents, such as low-income seniors and families, while simultaneously helping to keep restaurants open and people employed. To deliver those meals, Mullen explains, they had to consider “the food-service window of safety, the maximum time allowed between pick-up and drop-off.” Vans would be most efficient, capable of picking up 100-200 meals at a time. Immediately, he says, “everyone realized where we could get such vans.”

When Mullen approached Gajda about using the Audible shuttle vans to deliver NWK meals, she was very excited at the prospect of being able to retain some of her staff for the new duties. “She treats her drivers like family,” he says. About a month after calling Edward Green to deliver bad news, Stoudt was able to call him back with a proposition: would he like to drive again?

//images.ctfassets.net/3sa0209epr53/6n7EQ76T3Vb1Z71N3rZpU/40b5e1e094386fc152669819368c8c3c/203164371_337896111345083_7692575902737609037_n.jpg
Country Club was able to re-hire two drivers to make almost-daily runs for NWK, picking up hundreds of meals from restaurants and making deliveries all around town. It felt great.”

“It was helpful for us to have the vans to offset the logistics,” says Jennifer Shin, Director of Community Affairs for Audible’s Global Center for Urban Development (GCUD), which manages NWK operations, “but it was also about figuring out a way to keep paying our vendors and the employees we’ve developed relationships with. The drivers are hugely important. They’re heroes – they’re recognizable vans and the community sees them and knows it’s NWK.”

By summer 2021, NWK had delivered more than [1 million meals](https://www.audible.com/about/newsroom/newark-working-kitchens-delivers-1-million-meals) to people in need, with the help of Audible vans. As Audible begins re-opening its offices as part of its [Hub + Home](https://www.audible.com/about/newsroom/hub-and-home-reimagining-the-future-of-work-at-audible) hybrid model of working, the vans are once again shuttling employees too. Stoudt thinks they’ll be able to re-hire more drivers soon. “Business is picking back up, little by little,” he reports.

For Gajda, having grown up in Newark and built a business here, it fills her with pride that her company was instrumental to NWK’s impact on the city. The program will commence this fall with the unveiling of 12 commissions at Audible’s newly renovated 1 Washington Park headquarters and in the surrounding downtown neighborhood. The request for proposals will open on Monday, June 21st and close on Monday, August 9th. A virtual community meeting will take place on Wednesday, July 14th to review the inaugural scope of work and answer questions.

The Newark Artist Collaboration will include an array of site-specific and original interdisciplinary artworks to be installed in and around Audible’s headquarters, which is undergoing a comprehensive renovation in preparation for employees’ forthcoming return to the office. These neighborhood projects are made possible with the support of area stakeholders including Aetna Realty, Bolton Development, Fidelco Realty Group, FOCUS – Hispanic Center for Community Development, the Newark Public Library and Rutgers University-Newark.

Audible’s scope of resources will support distinctive collaboration and advancement of artistic practice. Opportunities will include indoor and outdoor facade activations (murals, wall installations, etc.); digital artwork and video; experimental and immersive media (light, sound, etc.); interventions, functional sculpture, and design work in a collaborative framework (such as apparel and product design).
The City of Newark’s Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs and local arts organizations such as Express Newark, Newark Arts, The Newark Museum of Art, and Project for Empty Space have advised on and supported the development of the program.
