and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> were attentive<MH241> to the Book<MH5612> of the Law<MH8451>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Ezra<MH5830> the scribe<MH5613b> stood<MH5975> at a wooden<MH6086> podium<MH4026> which<MH834> they had made<MH6213a> for the purpose<MH1697>. And beside<MH681a> him stood<MH5975> Mattithiah<MH4993>, Shema<MH8087b>, Anaiah<MH6043>, Uriah<MH223a>, Hilkiah<MH2518>, and Maaseiah<MH4641> on his right<MH3225>; and Pedaiah<MH6305>, Mishael<MH4332>, Malchijah<MH4441>, Hashum<MH2828>, Hashbaddanah<MH2806>, Zechariah<MH2148a>, <i>and</i> Meshullam<MH4918> on his left<MH8040>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Ezra<MH5830> opened<MH6605a> the book<MH5612> in the sight<MH5869> of all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, for he was <i>standing</i> above<MH4480, 5921> all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>; and when he opened<MH6605a> it, all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> stood<MH5975> up. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then Ezra<MH5830> blessed<MH1288> the LORD<MH3068>, the great<MH1419> God<MH430>. And all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> answered<MH6030a>, “Amen<MH543>, Amen<MH543>!” with the raising<MH4607> of their hands<MH3027>; then they kneeled<MH6915> down<MH6915> and worshiped<MH2331c> the LORD<MH3068> with <i>their</i> faces<MH639> to the ground<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Also Jeshua<MH3091>, Bani<MH1137>, Sherebiah<MH8274>, Jamin<MH3226>, Akkub<MH6126>, Shabbethai<MH7678>, Hodiah<MH1941>, Maaseiah<MH4641>, Kelita<MH7042>, Azariah<MH5838>, Jozabad<MH3107>, Hanan<MH2605>, Pelaiah<MH6384b>, and the Levites<MH3881> explained<MH995> the Law<MH8451> to the people<MH5971a> while the people<MH5971a> <i>remained</i> in their place<MH5977>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>They read<MH7121> from the book<MH5612>, from the Law<MH8451> of God<MH430>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>translating<MH6567a> to give<MH7760> the sense<MH7922> so that they understood<MH995> the reading<MH4744>. <p class="hdg">This Day Is Holy</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then Nehemiah<MH5166>, who<MH1931> was the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>governor<MH8660>, and Ezra<MH5830> the priest<MH3548> <i>and</i> scribe<MH5613b>, and the Levites<MH3881> who taught<MH995> the people<MH5971a> said<MH559> to all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, “This<MH1931> day<MH3117> is holy<MH6918> to the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>; do not mourn<MH56> or weep<MH1058>.” For all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> were weeping<MH1058> when they heard<MH8085> the words<MH1697> of the Law<MH8451>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559> to them, “Go<MH1980>, eat<MH398> the festival<MH4924b> foods<MH4924b>, drink<MH8354> the sweet<MH4477> drinks<MH4477>, and send<MH7971> portions<MH4490> to him who has nothing<MH369> prepared<MH3559>; for this day<MH3117> is holy<MH6918> to our Lord<MH136>. Do not be grieved<MH6087a>, for the joy<MH2304> of the LORD<MH3068> is your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>refuge<MH4581>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So the Levites<MH3881> silenced<MH2814> all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, saying<MH559>, “Be still<MH2013>, for the day<MH3117> is holy<MH6918>; do not be grieved<MH6087a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> went<MH1980> away to eat<MH398>, drink<MH8354>, to send<MH7971> portions<MH4490>, and to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>celebrate<MH6213a> a great<MH1419> feast<MH8057>, because<MH3588> they understood<MH995> the words<MH1697> which<MH834> had been made<MH3045> known<MH3045> to them. <p class="hdg">Feast of Booths Restored</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then on the second<MH8145> day<MH3117> the heads<MH7218> of fathers’<MH1> <i>households</i> of all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, the priests<MH3548>, and the Levites<MH3881> were gathered<MH622> to Ezra<MH5830> the scribe<MH5613b> so that they might gain<MH7919a> insight<MH7919a> into the words<MH1697> of the Law<MH8451>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And they found<MH4672> written<MH3789> in the Law<MH8451> how<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had commanded<MH6680> through<MH3027> Moses<MH4872> that the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> were to live<MH3427> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>booths<MH5521> during the feast<MH2282> of the seventh<MH7637> month<MH2320>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And that they were to proclaim<MH8085> and circulate<MH5674a> a proclamation<MH6963> in all<MH3605> their cities<MH5892b> and in Jerusalem<MH3389>, saying<MH559>, “Go<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the hills<MH2022>, and bring<MH935> olive<MH2132> branches<MH5929> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>wild<MH6086, 8081> olive<MH8081> branches<MH5929>, myrtle<MH1918> branches<MH5929>, palm<MH8558> branches<MH5929>, and branches<MH5929> of <i>other</i> trees<MH6086> with thick<MH5687> branches<MH5687>, to make<MH6213a> booths<MH5521>, as it is written<MH3789>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So the people<MH5971a> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> and brought<MH935> <i>them</i> and made<MH6213a> booths<MH5521> for themselves, each<MH376> on his roof<MH1406>, and in their courtyards<MH2691a> and in the courtyards<MH2691a> of the house<MH1004> of God<MH430>, and in the public<MH7339> square<MH7339> at the Water<MH4325> Gate<MH8179>, and in the square<MH7339> at the Gate<MH8179> of Ephraim<MH669>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>The entire<MH3605> assembly<MH6951> of those who had returned<MH7725> from the captivity<MH7628b> made<MH6213a> booths<MH5521> and lived<MH3427> in the booths<MH5521>. Indeed<MH3588>, the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> had not done<MH6213a> so<MH3651> since<MH4480> the days<MH3117> of Joshua<MH3091> the son<MH1121> of Nun<MH5126> to that day<MH3117>. And there was very<MH3966> great<MH1419> rejoicing<MH8057>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>He read<MH7121> from the Book<MH5612> of the Law<MH8451> of God<MH430> daily<MH3117>, from the first<MH7223> day<MH3117> to the last<MH314> day<MH3117>.
