The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, and Jesus Himself was tempted in the wilderness. This phrase warns against false messiahs who might claim to be in such a place, drawing on the expectation of a messianic figure emerging from the wilderness, as John the Baptist did. The wilderness is also a place of isolation, making it easier for deceptive figures to manipulate followers without scrutiny.
do not go out,
This command emphasizes discernment and caution. The instruction not to go out suggests that believers should not be swayed by sensational claims or rumors. It reflects the need for spiritual vigilance and the importance of remaining grounded in the teachings of Christ rather than seeking signs or wonders in remote places. This echoes the broader biblical theme of testing spirits and holding fast to sound doctrine.
or, ‘Here He is, in the inner rooms,’
The mention of "inner rooms" refers to secretive or hidden places, possibly alluding to the private chambers of influential leaders or secretive cults. In the cultural context, such places could be associated with clandestine meetings or conspiracies. This warning highlights the danger of being drawn into secretive or exclusive groups that claim special revelation or insight into the presence of Christ, which contradicts the open and universal nature of His return.
do not believe it.
This final admonition underscores the importance of skepticism towards claims of Christ's presence that do not align with His teachings about His return. The Bible consistently teaches that Christ's second coming will be unmistakable and visible to all, as described in passages like Revelation 1:7, where every eye will see Him. This phrase encourages believers to rely on the clear and public nature of Christ's return rather than being misled by false reports or secretive claims.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The speaker of this passage, providing a warning to His disciples about false claims regarding His return.

2. False Prophets
Individuals who will falsely claim the presence of Christ in specific locations.

3. Wilderness
A place mentioned as a potential false location for Christ's return, symbolizing isolation and deception.

4. Inner Rooms
Another false location, representing secrecy and hiddenness, where false claims about Christ's presence might be made.

5. Disciples
The immediate audience of Jesus' teaching, representing all believers who are warned against deception.
Teaching Points
Discernment is Essential
Believers must exercise discernment and not be swayed by sensational claims or rumors about Christ's return.

Stay Grounded in Scripture
Knowing the Word of God helps believers recognize false teachings and remain steadfast in truth.

Beware of Deception
False prophets and teachers will use convincing signs and wonders; believers must be vigilant and not easily led astray.

Christ's Return Will Be Unmistakable
Jesus emphasizes that His return will be evident to all, not hidden or secretive.

Community Accountability
Engage with a community of believers to discuss and discern teachings, ensuring alignment with biblical truth.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Matthew 24

What actions do angels perform?

What guidance does the Bible provide on prayer?

Why is the Upper Room significant?

Why does David, in Psalm 58, invoke violent divine judgment (verse 6) when other passages emphasize mercy?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(26) In the secret chambers.--The word is the same as that translated "closet" in Matthew 6:6. What is meant is that the pretenders will in some way or other shun the publicity which would test their claims. There would be whispered rumours that the Christ was concealing Himself in the wilderness beyond the Jordan, or in the inner recesses of some zealot's house, and would at the last moment appear to claim the throne of His father David. (Comp. Jos. Wars, vi. 5, ? 2). Believers in Christ would hear such words with a calm indifference, for they would know that such was not to be the manner of His approach.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 26. - Wherefore if (ἐὰν οϋν, if therefore). The Lord proceeds to make the matter more plain by entering into details which the "here" and "there" of ver. 23 had not sufficiently denoted. He (Christ) is in the desert. If there was a partial fulfilment of this warning at the siege of Jerusalem, when some impostors tried to persuade the people that Messiah was in the wilderness, preparing to march to their relief, it is to have its chief accomplishment just before the final consummation. Go not forth. Be not deluded into following any local deceiver. When Christ comes the second time, he will not come as at Bethlehem, in secret, in a corner. If any pretender should be announced under such conditions, they were to put no belief in him. To limit the Lord's appearance to particular persons or to a particular place, was to incur fatal error.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
So
οὖν (oun)
Conjunction
Strong's 3767: Therefore, then.
