And what<MH4100> are you doing<MH6213a> in this<MH2088> <i>place?</i> And what<MH4100> do you have here<MH6311>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>He said<MH559> to them, “Micah<MH4318> has done<MH6213a> this<MH2090> and that<MH2088> for me, and he has hired<MH7936> me and I have become<MH1961> his priest<MH3548>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then they said<MH559> to him, “Inquire<MH7592> of God<MH430>, please<MH4994>, that we may know<MH3045> whether our way<MH1870> on which<MH834> we are going<MH1980> will be<MH6743b> successful<MH6743b>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And the priest<MH3548> said<MH559> to them, “Go<MH1980> in peace<MH7965>; your way<MH1870> in which<MH834> you are going<MH1980> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>has the LORD’S<MH3068> approval<MH5227>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So the five<MH2568> men<MH376> departed<MH1980> and came<MH935> to Laish<MH3919a>, and saw<MH7200> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were in it living<MH3427> in security<MH983>, in the way<MH4941> of the Sidonians<MH6722>, quiet<MH8252> and unsuspecting<MH982>; for there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>oppressive<MH6114> ruler<MH3423> humiliating<MH3637> <i>them</i> for anything<MH1697> in the land<MH776>, and they were far<MH7350> from the Sidonians<MH6722> and had<MH369> no<MH369> dealings<MH1697> with anyone<MH120>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>When they came<MH935> back to their brothers<MH251> at Zorah<MH6881> and Eshtaol<MH847b>, their brothers<MH251> said<MH559> to them, “What<MH4100> <i>do</i> you <i>say?</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And they said<MH559>, “Arise<MH6965>, and let’s go<MH5927> up<MH5927> against<MH5921> them; for we have seen<MH7200> the land<MH776>, and behold<MH2009>, it is very<MH3966> good<MH2896a>. And will you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>sit<MH2814> still<MH2814>? Do not hesitate<MH6101> to go<MH1980>, to enter<MH935>, to take<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of the land<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>When you enter<MH935>, you will come<MH935> to an unsuspecting<MH982> people<MH5971a> with a spacious<MH7342, 3027> land<MH776>; for God<MH430> has handed<MH5414, 3027> it over<MH5414> to you, a place<MH4725> where<MH834, 8033> there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> lack<MH4270> of anything<MH3605, 1697> that is on the earth<MH776>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then from the family<MH4940> of the Danites<MH1839>, from Zorah<MH6881> and from Eshtaol<MH847b>, six<MH8337a> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> armed<MH2296> with weapons<MH3627> of war<MH4421> set<MH5265> out<MH5265>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>They went<MH5927> up<MH5927> and camped<MH2583> at Kiriath-jearim<MH7157> in Judah<MH3063>. Therefore<MH5921, 3651> they called<MH7121> that place<MH4725> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Mahaneh-dan<MH4265> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>; behold<MH2009>, it is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>west<MH310> of Kiriath-jearim<MH7157>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And they passed<MH5674a> from there<MH8033> to the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> of Ephraim<MH669> and came<MH935> to the house<MH1004> of Micah<MH4318>. <p class="hdg">Danites Take Micah’s Idols</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then the five<MH2568> men<MH376> who went<MH1980> to spy<MH7270> out<MH7270> the country<MH776> of Laish<MH3919a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>said<MH559> to their kinsmen<MH251>, “Do you know<MH3045> that there<MH3426> are<MH3426> in these<MH428> houses<MH1004> an ephod<MH646> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>household<MH8655> idols<MH8655>, and a carved<MH6459> image<MH6459> and a cast<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a> image<MH4541a>? Now<MH6258> then, consider<MH3045> what<MH4100> you should do<MH6213a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So they turned<MH5493> aside<MH5493> there<MH8033> and came<MH935> to the house<MH1004> of the young<MH5288> man<MH5288>, the Levite<MH3881>, to the house<MH1004> of Micah<MH4318>, and asked<MH7592> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>him how<MH7965> he was doing<MH7965>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Meanwhile, the six<MH8337a> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> armed<MH2296> with their weapons<MH3627> of war<MH4421>, who<MH834> were of the sons<MH1121> of Dan<MH1835>, were positioned<MH5324> at the entrance<MH6607> of the gate<MH8179>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now the five<MH2568> men<MH376> who went<MH1980> to spy<MH7270> out<MH7270> the land<MH776> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> <i>and</i> entered<MH935> there<MH8033>; they took<MH3947> the carved<MH6459> image<MH6459>, the ephod<MH646>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>household<MH8655> idols<MH8655>, and the cast<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a> image<MH4541a>, while the priest<MH3548> was standing<MH5324> at the entrance<MH6607> of the gate<MH8179> with the six<MH8337a> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> armed<MH2296> with weapons<MH3627> of war<MH4421>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>When these<MH428> <i>men</i> entered<MH935> Micah’s<MH4318> house<MH1004> and took<MH3947> the carved<MH6459> image<MH6459>, the ephod<MH646>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>household<MH8655> idols<MH8655>, and the cast<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a> image<MH4541a>, the priest<MH3548> said<MH559> to them, “What<MH4100> are you doing<MH6213a>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And they said<MH559> to him, “Be<MH2790b> silent<MH2790b>, put<MH7760> your hand<MH3027> over<MH5921> your mouth<MH6310>, and go<MH1980> with us, and be to us a father<MH1> and a priest<MH3548>. Is it better<MH2896a> for you to be a priest<MH3548> to the house<MH1004> of one<MH259> man<MH376>, or<MH176> to be priest<MH3548> to a tribe<MH7626> and a family<MH4940> in Israel<MH3478>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>The priest’s<MH3548> heart<MH3820> was<MH3190> glad<MH3190>, and he took<MH3947> the ephod<MH646>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>household<MH8655> idols<MH8655>, and the carved<MH6459> image<MH6459>, and went<MH935> among<MH7130> the people<MH5971a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then they turned<MH6437> and left<MH1980>, and put<MH7760> the children<MH2945>, the livestock<MH4735>, and the valuables<MH3520> in front<MH6440> of them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>When they had distanced<MH7368> themselves<MH7368> from Micah’s<MH4318> house<MH1004>, the men<MH376> who<MH834> <i>were</i> in the houses<MH1004> near<MH5973> Micah’s<MH4318> house<MH1004> assembled<MH2199> by<MH2199> command<MH2199> and overtook<MH1692> the sons<MH1121> of Dan<MH1835>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then they called<MH7121> out<MH7121> to the sons<MH1121> of Dan<MH1835>, who turned<MH5437> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>around<MH6440> and said<MH559> to Micah<MH4318>, “What<MH4100> is <i>the matter</i> with you, that you have assembled<MH2199> together<MH2199>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, “You have taken<MH3947> my gods<MH430> which<MH834> I made<MH6213a>, and the priest<MH3548>, and have gone<MH1980> away<MH1980>; what<MH4100> more<MH5750> do I have? So how<MH4100, 2088> can you say<MH559> to me, ‘What<MH4100> is <i>the matter</i> with you?’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of Dan<MH1835> said<MH559> to him, “Do not let your voice<MH6963> be heard<MH8085> among<MH5973> us, or<MH6435> else<MH6435> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>fierce<MH4751, 5315> men<MH376> will attack<MH6293> you, and you will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>lose<MH622> your life<MH5315> and the lives<MH5315> of your household<MH1004>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>So the sons<MH1121> of Dan<MH1835> went<MH1980> on their way<MH1870>; and when Micah<MH4318> saw<MH7200> that they were too<MH4480> strong<MH2389> for him, he turned<MH6437> and went<MH7725> back<MH7725> to his house<MH1004>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then they took<MH3947> what<MH834> Micah<MH4318> had made<MH6213a> and the priest<MH3548> who<MH834> had<MH1961> belonged<MH1961> to him, and came<MH935> to Laish<MH3919a>, to a people<MH5971a> quiet<MH8252> and unsuspecting<MH982>, and struck<MH5221> them with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>; and they burned<MH8313> the city<MH5892b> with fire<MH784>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/18-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> one<MH369> to save<MH5337> <i>them,</i> because<MH3588> it was far<MH7350> from Sidon<MH6721> and they had<MH369> no<MH369> dealings<MH1697> with anyone<MH120>, and it was in the valley<MH6010> which<MH834> is near Beth-rehob<MH1050>.
