In the ancient Near Eastern context, such conditions could result from accidents, warfare, or pagan religious practices, including self-castration. The prohibition reflects the importance of wholeness and integrity in those who participate in the worship and community life of Israel. The physical wholeness required here symbolizes spiritual and moral integrity. This requirement can be seen as a reflection of the holiness and perfection of God, who desires His people to be set apart and whole in their devotion to Him.<p><b>may enter the assembly of the LORD.</b><br>The "assembly of the LORD" refers to the congregation of Israel, particularly in the context of worship and communal decision-making. This exclusion from the assembly underscores the importance of purity and holiness in the community that represents God on earth. The assembly was a place where God's presence was uniquely manifest, and thus, those who entered needed to reflect His holiness. This requirement can be connected to the broader biblical theme of holiness, as seen in <a href="/leviticus/21-17.htm">Leviticus 21:17-23</a>, where physical defects disqualify priests from offering sacrifices. In the New Testament, the focus shifts from physical wholeness to spiritual wholeness, as seen in passages like <a href="/1_corinthians/6-9.htm">1 Corinthians 6:9-11</a>, where Paul emphasizes the transformation and sanctification of believers through Christ. This transformation is a type of the ultimate restoration and wholeness found in Jesus Christ, who makes all believers spiritually whole and acceptable before God.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/m/moses.htm">Moses</a></b><br>The author of Deuteronomy, who is delivering God's laws to the Israelites.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/i/israelites.htm">Israelites</a></b><br>The chosen people of God, receiving the laws and commandments as they prepare to enter the Promised Land.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/t/the_assembly_of_the_lord.htm">The Assembly of the LORD</a></b><br>Refers to the congregation or community of Israel, particularly in a religious or worship context.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/h/holiness_and_wholeness.htm">Holiness and Wholeness</a></b><br>The physical requirements for entering the assembly symbolize the spiritual wholeness and purity God desires from His people. The exclusion of persons who had suffered this from the congregation, <span class="accented">i</span>.<span class="accented">e</span>. from the covenant fellowship of Israel, the <span class="greek">πολιτεία τοῦ Ισραὴλ</span> (<a href="/ephesians/2-12.htm">Ephesians 2:12</a>), was due to the priestly character of the nation. Israel was a kingdom of priests (<a href="/exodus/19-6.htm">Exodus 19:6</a>), and the admission into it of one in whom the nature of man, as made by God, had been degraded and marred, would have been unfitting; just as all bodily blemish unfitted a man for being a priest, though otherwise qualified (<a href="/leviticus/21-16.htm">Leviticus 21:16-24</a>). This law, however, was one of the ordinances intended for the period of nonage; it had reference to the outward typical aspect of the Israelitish constitution; and it ceased to have any significance when the spiritual kingdom of God came to be established. Even under the theocracy, eunuchs were not excluded from religious privileges; they could keep God's Sabbaths, and take hold of his covenant, and choose the things pleasing to him, and so be part of the spiritual Israel, though shut out from the fellowship of that which was outward and national (cf. <a href="/isaiah/56-4.htm">Isaiah 56:4</a>). <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">No man</span><br /><span class="heb">לֹֽא־</span> <span class="translit">(lō-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Adverb - Negative particle<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3808.htm">Strong's 3808: </a> </span><span class="str2">Not, no</span><br /><br /><span class="word">with crushed</span><br /><span class="heb">פְצֽוּעַ־</span> <span class="translit">(p̄ə·ṣū·a‘-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6481.htm">Strong's 6481: </a> </span><span class="str2">To bruise, wound by bruising</span><br /><br /><span class="word">or severed</span><br /><span class="heb">וּכְר֥וּת</span> <span class="translit">(ū·ḵə·rūṯ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3772.htm">Strong's 3772: </a> </span><span class="str2">To cut, to destroy, consume, to covenant</span><br /><br /><span class="word">genitals</span><br /><span class="heb">שָׁפְכָ֖ה</span> <span class="translit">(šā·p̄ə·ḵāh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8212.htm">Strong's 8212: </a> </span><span class="str2">A pipe, the penis</span><br /><br /><span class="word">may enter</span><br /><span class="heb">יָבֹ֧א</span> <span class="translit">(yā·ḇō)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_935.htm">Strong's 935: </a> </span><span class="str2">To come in, come, go in, go</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the assembly</span><br /><span class="heb">בִּקְהַ֥ל</span> <span class="translit">(biq·hal)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6951.htm">Strong's 6951: </a> </span><span class="str2">Assembly, convocation, congregation</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of the LORD.</span><br /><span class="heb">יְהוָֽה׃</span> <span class="translit">(Yah·weh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3068.htm">Strong's 3068: </a> </span><span class="str2">LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israel</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Deuteronomy 23:1 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Deuteronomy 23:1 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Deuteronomy 23:1 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Deuteronomy 23:1 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Deuteronomy 23:1 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Deuteronomy 23:1 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Deuteronomy 23:1 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Deuteronomy 23:1 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Deuteronomy 23:1 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">Deuteronomy 23:1 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/deuteronomy/23-1.htm">OT Law: Deuteronomy 23:1 He who is wounded in the stones (Deut.
