The status quo of importing oil from foreign countries was the only option for feeding the energy demands of America’s industries and end consumers. All too often, the countries the U.S. imported oil from were, shall we say, not directly aligned with American interests. In many cases, some were openly hostile to the United States but were still willing to do business with us.

Oil as a Political Weapon

Who remembers the gas lines back in the early 70s? That was the result of the OPEC oil embargo placed on countries viewed as sympathetic to Israel. Americans across the country felt the pain at the pump as OPEC punished the United States for its support of Israel over Syria and Egypt in 1973’s Arab-Israeli War.

In 1979, Americans again felt the pain at the pumps during the Iranian Revolution. Oil prices skyrocketed during the Revolution and again during the Gulf War in 1990 and yet again in 2003 when the U.S. invaded Iraq. The Middle East, OPEC in particular, has used oil as a diplomatic weapon against the U.S. and with great success.

What if foreign oil could no longer be used as a weapon of mass economic destruction against the United States? What if America did not have to import oil from nations that were openly hostile towards American ideals and values? The political landscape of the entire world would be forced to evolve.

It seems that we are now in the midst of that very evolution.

The pipe dream of U.S. energy independence is no longer just a dream; it is now a distinct possibility. The shale oil and gas revolution along with new technology is paving the way to U.S. energy independence.

Fracking Revolutionizes the Oil & Gas Industry

Fracking can trace its roots back to the 1860s when Col. Edward A.L. Roberts used what was described as an exploding torpedo to increase production in artesian wells. Since then, technology such as vertical wells and horizontal drilling have revolutionized the oil and gas industry and turned U.S. shale deposits, once considered unrecoverable, into the largest oil and gas reserves in the world. Rystad Energy estimates the US oil reserves to be 264bn barrels, surpassing Saudi Arabia’s 212bn and even Russia’s 256bn barrels in reserves.

RELATED >> When was fracking first used?

Shale Boom Lowers US Oil Imports

The shale boom has resulted in drastically lowering foreign oil imports into the US. In 2005, the US was importing 65% of the oil needed to meet production demands. In 2010, that figured dropped to 55%, and in 2015, only 28% was imported to meet demand.

Raymond James & Associates estimates that the U.S. will only need to import 11% of its oil to meet production needs by the year 2020. If that estimation turns out to be true, Mexico and Canada could meet the import requirements of the U.S. alone, thus eliminating the need to import oil from countries not necessarily aligned with American interests. Not quite US energy independence, but “North American Oil independence” and that’s a far cry better than where we are now.

RELATED >> The Fracking Groundwater Cover-Up

RELATED >> Permian Basin Discovery Great News for Texas

Permian Basin Discovery Great News for Texas

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Current Events

Permian Basin Oil News

Crude Oil

Domestic Oil Production

Permian Basin

From natural resources to rapidly growing economies, there’s a reason the Lone ...

From natural resources to rapidly growing economies, there’s a reason the Lone Star State has so much to offer. And now, the Apache Corporation, a Houston-based oil exploration company, is the latest to discover one more thing to love: an enormous oil store in the Permian Basin. Discovered while drilling on land purchased by the company over the last several years, initial reports provide a rosy picture into what this unique geological formation has in store.

Big News in Oil and Gas

As U.S. oil interests shift from overseas to domestic resources, any oil discovery is a good oil discovery. With the potential to provide hundreds to thousands of jobs for both trained and untrained labor alike, a new find means only positive things for both the local and national economies.

The size of the discovery is one for the record books – Apache is claiming over three billion barrels of oil and 75 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, one of the largest finds in recent history. This amount, roughly the equivalent of an entire year of crude oil production in the United States, is virtually unprecedented in recent history, providing untold benefits to the Texas economy.

A Landmark Discovery

The Permian Basin is among Texas’ most remote landmarks. A sedimentary basin stretching 250 miles wide and 300 miles long, this unique formation is primarily located in southwestern Texas with several dozen miles extending into southeastern New Mexico. Largely uninhabited due to harsh climates with just over 500,000 total residents, the Permian Basin is the perfect place for additional oil stores.

Despite the present excitement, Apache Corporation’s discovery is multiple years in the making. Over time, the company has purchased over 307,000 contiguous acres in the Basin in hopes of an outcome just like this one. At the cost of roughly $1,300 per acre, the investment was pricey but worth it. Naming the new plane Alpine High, the untapped potential for oil and gas retrieval in Texas is now beyond even what industry experts foresaw.

Texas and Oil Drilling

Texas has long been a destination for domestic drilling, making this discovery less surprising than it could be. The oil boom started in the early twentieth century, and Texas was one of the first states depended on upon for domestic oil production. By the end of World War Two, the vast oil reserves discovered across the region led to rapid development, creating cities out of small farming towns and developing the area’s overall economy. Apache’s latest find helps keeps this enduring legacy alive, adding a new chapter to the Permian Basin’s already legendary history of pumping domestic oil.

Apache struck gold with their Texas land purchase, driving interest in other such companies eager to do the same. By discovering the billions of barrels’ worth of oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas, the future of mining and refining in Texas is brighter than ever. While there’s no guarantee that additional such stores exist, the climate, terrain, and successful drilling expeditions of the past make the possibility extremely likely. With the potential to continue to provide jobs, resources, and economic development to Texans and residents of other Southwestern states, the drive for discovery in the Permian Basin continues.

RELATED >> The History of Permian Basin Oil

RELATED >> Private Equity Finding Permian Basin Oil Producers

The Panhandle Import Reduction Initiative Battles OPEC

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Current Events

Permian Basin Oil News

Crude Oil

Dr. Daniel Fine

OPEC

Permian Basin

A group of oil producers from the Permian Basin have started a ...

A group of oil producers from the Permian Basin have started a grassroots effort to place restrictions on oil imports from certain foreign countries. This effort is aimed squarely at OPEC, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. This new group calls themselves The Panhandle Import Reduction Initiative.

A spokesman of the group, Dr. Daniel Fine, who is also the associate director of the New Mexico Center for Energy Policy, said, “We want to organize public rallies with producers and field workers whose jobs are at stake. This is a grassroots effort in the basins where the oil bust has taken place.” Dr. Fine has also release a white paper titled, “Foreign Oil Imports: the Danger to the American Light Tight Oil Revolution and National Security” in which he refers to oil imports as a national security issue.

The goal of the Panhandle Import Reduction Initiative is to break OPEC’s influence over oil prices worldwide, an influence they have wielded for decades. They plan to do this by limiting which countries will be able to import oil into the United States. Under their plan, only Mexico and Canada will be able to import oil into the U.S. The group’s organizers plan to approach the new U.S. President after the November elections asking him/her to use their executive authority and restrict crude oil shipments from overseas.

Organizers of the initiative say that the restriction of crude imports would help stabilize the oil market, help the smaller oil companies compete, and put unemployed oil workers back to work. Tom Cambridge, owner of Cambridge Production said of the initiative, “It would break OPEC’s back with respect to price manipulation and lead to market prices set by U.S. supply and demand.”

The Mission Statement from the group’s website reads:

The Panhandle Import Reduction Initiative was established to educate political leaders and law makers on the importance of reducing imported oil supplies to bolster the US economy and national security. It proposes a grass roots, updated version of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 1959 U.S. Quota on Petroleum Imports that set out to:

Insure a stable, healthy industry in the United States capable of exploring for and developing new hemisphere reserves which meet requirements for our national security . . . to preserve to the greatest extent possible a vigorous, healthy petroleum industry in the U.S.

Keep oil imports at roughly 10 – 12% of U.S. consumption

Favor “hemisphere” imports / development as opposed to oil brought across oceans (i.e. overseas imports)

The initiative aims to do this by persuading U.S. energy policy makers to:

Eliminate imports of foreign LTO (aka “light foreign oil”), relying instead on domestic production of same from U.S. shale plays.

Phase in a gradual decrease of foreign heavy oil imports over time, eventually reaching the 10 – 12% levels called out in the 1959 quota plan.

One thing that bears pointing out is that many believe that OPEC’s policies on oil production were directly aimed at shutting down the businesses of U.S. shale producers. Google the phrase “OPEC war on shale” and you’ll find a host of articles of the opinion that OPEC’s acts were a deliberate and concerted effort. The Panhandle Import Reduction Initiative seeks to turn the tables on OPEC. Whether or not their efforts will receive the support it needs from Washington DC in order to be successful remains to be seen.

The History of Permian Basin Oil

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Interesting Facts

Permian Basin Oil News

Delaware Basin

Horizontal Drilling

Hydraulic Fracturing

Permian Basin

Used in everything from automotive fuel to manufactured home goods, oil has ...

Used in everything from automotive fuel to manufactured home goods, oil has long played a significant role in the American lifestyle. For over a hundred years, the oil industry has been extremely competitive, driving the U.S. economy and the import/export culture in countries around the world. While the United States has alternated between domestic oil production and securing oil from other nations, today’s technologies are now leaning in favor of domestic production by creating reliable and affordable ways to enhance the efficiency of oil extraction in the continental United States.

Among the oil-rich areas ideal for drilling is Texas, a spacious area boasting extensive oil stores, a low cost of living, and a favorable climate. While there are many desirable locales for oil production across the southwest portion of the country, the Permian Basin in particular offers compelling advantages for domestic exploration and production.

The Permian Basin

Spanning the western portion of Texas and the eastern portion of New Mexico, the Permian Basin is among the largest and thickest deposits of sedimentary rocks in the country from the Permian geological period. The Permian Basin is made up of three component basins: the large Midland Basin, the Delaware Basin to the West, and the smaller Marfa Basin. Extending over 250 miles in width and over 300 miles in length, a great portion of the landscape of Texas is dominated by this unique underground rock formation.

Due to its vast hydrocarbon reserves, the Permian Basin is extremely important to the oil and gas industry and is considered a significant part of the Mid-Continent Oil Producing Area. This puts the Texas towns of Midland and Odessa squarely in the heart of oil production country and they also serve as a transportation hub for exporting oil and gas to other parts of the country. As the largest petroleum-producing basin in the U.S., the Permian Basin plays a large role in the geography, economy, and culture of Texas.

Oil Production in the Permian Basin

Drilling in the area began in the 1920s, but production really started to soar with the use of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. For nearly 100 years, oil has been extracted and refined from the Permian rock deposits and, despite over 2 million barrels produced in the area per day, experts estimate that the remaining natural stores are even greater than what has been produced in the last 90 years.

The potential of the basin itself is immense, boasting oil stores ranging in depth from a few dozen feet below the surface to over five miles down. Many of these resources are only 10,000 feet below the surface, making access by conventional drilling equipment fast and easy. Until the last decade, more traditional extraction techniques have been primarily in use, leaving much of the potential in the basin untapped. As technology grows and evolves, more efficient methods of extracting oil have been developed and put into use. With these new developments, production in the area has accelerated in the past years, with 253 million barrels produced in 2005 compared to 312 million in 2012.

Hydraulic Fracturing in the Permian Basin

While traditional methods of oil extraction have obviously been highly effective, newer technologies like hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling have led to a massive increase in the number of barrels of oil produced each day in the Permian Basin and in shale plays across the country. However, that increased production played a role in the drop in oil prices, thus creating a tricky balance between cost effective oil production and industry supply and demand.

Even though today’s oil prices have cast a shadow on the oil industry, the Permian Basin remains poised to be a top oil producing area for many years to come.

Texas Sues EPA Over Methane Emission Rules

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Current Events

EPA

The EPA is planning a massive crackdown on methane emissions related to ...

The EPA is planning a massive crackdown on methane emissions related to oil production, but Texas has a different idea. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed suit against the Obama administration’s EPA and their new rules for cutting methane emissions as part of their efforts to curb “climate change”. This suit brings Paxton’s total number of lawsuits against the federal government to twelve and the total number of Texas lawsuits against the Obama administration to 43.

The new rules for the oil and gas sector were released by the EPA earlier this year and aim to cut methane emissions by 45% by the year 2025.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) is also suing the EPA claiming that the EPA violated its own rules when regulating methane emissions.

API spokesman Reid Porter said, “The Clean Air Act provides specific limitations on the way the EPA can develop regulations. In this instance, EPA did not adhere to the statutory requirements when it expanded the rule to include methane. Greater use of clean, affordable natural gas has pushed carbon emissions from power generation to their lowest level in more than 20 years and the industry is already leading the way on methane reductions.”

Additional states suing over the methane rules are Alabama, Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Converting Crude to Ethylene Technology Breakthrough

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Current Events

Oil and Gas Interesting Facts

Crude Oil

Ethylene

Exxon Mobile and Saudi Aramco have developed technology that transforms crude oil ...

Exxon Mobile and Saudi Aramco have developed technology that transforms crude oil directly into ethylene, bypassing the step of converting crude oil to naphtha. Ethylene is widely used in the petrochemical industry – one of its main uses is to make polyethylene or plastic. This technology could revolutionize the petrochemical industry and save hundreds of millions of dollars in processing costs.

Converting Crude to Ethylene

The primary feedstock for the majority of petrochemical plants outside of the U.S. is naphtha. Petroleum naphtha is an intermediate hydrocarbon liquid stream derived from the refining of crude oil – basically step one in the refining of crude oil towards making gasoline or plastics. Naphtha is then converted to ethylene in order to produce plastics, resins, and chemicals. Since naphtha is more expensive than crude oil, this new technology has the potential to save up to $200 per metric ton of ethylene according to an engineering analysis conducted by IHS.

In an IHS press release, it says:

The ExxonMobil process completely bypasses the traditional naphtha cracking process. Saudi Aramco has its own process for crude oil to olefins, and in June 2016, Aramco announced a joint venture with SABIC to study building a ‘crude oil-to-chemicals’ complex in Saudi Arabia. Though the exact process configuration for the potential joint-venture was not disclosed, it is possible this complex will employ the Aramco process, at least in part.

According to the IHS report, the ExxonMobil process completely bypasses the refinery and feeds crude oil to the cracking furnaces. These have each been modified to include a flash pot between the convective and radiant sections of the furnaces. Next, the crude oil is pre-heated and then flashed, IHS said, essentially ‘topping’ the lighter components from the crude.

This extracted vapor, the IHS report said, is then fed back into the furnace’s radiant coils and cracked in the usual fashion. The heavier liquid that collects at the bottom of the flash pot is either transferred to the adjacent ExxonMobil refinery, or sold into the merchant market.

The author of the IHS report was Anthony Pavone, director of engineering at IHS Chemical.

The only crude-to-ethylene plant in the world was opened by Exxon Mobile in 2014 in Singapore at its chemical plant located there. The plant is Exxon Mobile’s largest petrochemical plant in the world.

When was fracking first used?

SEOadmin

Permian Basin Oil News

Uncategorized

Col. While recent advances in technology have improved fracking by leaps and bounds, fracking itself can be traced back to the Civil War.

In 1862, Col. Edward A.L. Roberts was on the battlefield in Fredericksburg, Virginia when he witnessed the effects of Confederate soldiers firing explosive artillery shells into a narrow canal that was an obstruction on the battlefield. This sparked an idea in Roberts’ mind of how explosives could be used as a method to increase oil production in wells with what he described as superincumbent fluid tamping.

In 1866, Col. Roberts was issued U.S. Patent No. 59,936 for what was described as the Roberts exploding torpedo. The torpedo was basically an iron casing containing 15 to 20 pounds of gunpowder. In 1866, Roberts conducted a series of experiments where his newly patented torpedoes were lowered in wells. Then the boreholes were filled with water, hence the superincumbent fluid tamping, to concentrate the concussion of the explosion and increase the “fracturing” of the formation. The torpedoes were then detonated via a wire running from the shell to the surface.

Roberts’ experiments were wildly successful. Oil production in some of the wells increased by 1,200% within a week of the shell detonation or “exploding shot”. This gave birth to the Roberts Petroleum Torpedo Company.

Roberts’ company charged from $100 to $200 for each torpedo detonation. In addition to the charge per torpedo, the company also received a royalty of 1/15 of the profits generated by the procedure. The exploding shot method was used for decades in oil production.

As you can see, fracking is not some newfangled technology, but has been improved upon to what it is today. These advances have led to the shale revolution which has been a saving grace for the American economy.

>> RELATED – The Fracking Groundwater Cover-Up

>> RELATED – Fracking Bans in Texas Outlawed

The Fracking Groundwater Cover-Up

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Current Events

Permian Basin Oil News

Uncategorized

Fracking

Hydraulic Fracturing

Hydraulic fracturing (commonly known as fracking) is a common technique used in ...

Hydraulic fracturing (commonly known as fracking) is a common technique used in oil and natural gas exploration and development in the United States. In fact, it is estimated that over one million wells have been fracked either hydraulically or by other methods in oil and natural gas basins across the nation since the 1940’s. It has just been in the past ten years or so that the use of fracking has sparked a heated debate as to whether or not it is safe for groundwater sources in proximity to the wells.

Environmentalists, green energy advocates, climate change proponents, and Hollywood have viciously attacked fracking, but the question remains, is their demonization of fracking warranted? Does fracking contaminate groundwater sources?

In 2014, a landmark 18-month federal study on hydraulic fracturing by the Department of Energy was conducted at a site in western Pennsylvania. Scientists used tracer fluids, seismic monitoring, and an array of other tests to look for problems created by the fracking process. The study resulted in one of the most detailed reports to date as to the effects of fracking on the surrounding rock structures and groundwater, but found no evidence of contaminated groundwater.

An EPA five-year study concerning the potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas on drinking water resources in the United States, “found no evidence for direct communication with shallow drinking water wells due to upward migration from shale horizons.” (page 5) However, the study did find that, while groundwater contamination was not coming from fracking, contamination could come from surface spills.

A major three-year study of fracking and its impact on local water supplies was recently completed by a team of researchers at the University of Cincinnati. This study specifically targeted the Utica shale region of Ohio. The results of the study showed that there was no evidence of groundwater contamination from hydraulic fracturing.

The problem with this study is that the results are not being released to the public. Dr. Amy Townsend-Small, an assistant professor at the University Of Cincinnati Department Of Geology and the leader of the study said, “I am really sad to say this, but some of our funders, the groups that had given us funding in the past, were a little disappointed in our results. They feel that fracking is scary and so they were hoping our data could point to a reason to ban it.” As more information comes out about this study, we find that it was funded by “ban fracking” activists who are also behind the delay in the release of the findings of the study.

On the flip side, there was a study in Pavillion, Wyoming on the town’s water supply where fracking was claimed to have been linked to groundwater contamination. The interesting thing about that study is that it is quickly becoming one of the most quoted sources on the internet regarding fracking and groundwater contamination. You’ll find stories on it on Think Progress, Greenpeace, EcoWatch, Inside Climate News, The Huffington Post, The Daily Kos, and even across the pond at The Guardian. There is also a petition on MoveOn.org requesting that President Obama and EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy reopen fracking investigations in Pavillion, Wyoming and other areas. If you are familiar with these organizations, you might notice a common thread.

Why would studies that find no evidence of fracking causing ground water contamination get the results buried, but studies that link fracking to water contamination get published and quoted far and wide? Forbes.com offers a possible reason in “Russians Financed The U.S. Anti-Fracking Movement.” Surprisingly, the New York Times backs up the Forbes story with one of their own, “Russian Money Suspected Behind Fracking Protests.”

So the debate rages on as to whether or not fracking causes groundwater contamination. Both sides have studies supporting their claims. However, may we offer this in closing – instead of jumping on a particular study as the end-all-be-all, perhaps we should dig deeper into who is funding the study and what are their motives, and also who is conducting the study and ascertain as to whether or not they have an agenda as well. Maybe some “independent and unbiased” studies would be in order.

Memorial Day 2016 – May 30
production company, today announced a record-setting quarter with successful well completions that have resulted in the co-discovery of two new fields in Louisiana and Oklahoma. The two recently-discovered fields are currently in production; a third field, which is also located in Oklahoma, is expected to go into production in April 2016. The discoveries add significant oil and gas reserves to the company’s existing portfolio of producing properties, which previously included production exclusively from Texas.

Key highlights from Aresco’s recent drilling activity include:

A targeted Tuscaloosa Sands reentry program in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana yielded over 500 million cubic feet of natural gas production in its first eight weeks of production

A newly completed vertical well in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma is currently producing from three commingled zones, including the Hunton Lime, with initial production registering sixty barrels of oil per day

With a larger amount of potential pay logged, combined with a few other key characteristics, a second Hunton Lime well that is currently completing in McClain County, Oklahoma is expected to exceed the results of the first Hunton Lime well

“Our strategic entry with experienced, highly-focused lead operating partners in Oklahoma and Louisiana has proven very positive for our company and our capital partners,” said Brandon Laxton, President and Founder of Aresco LP and Aresco Operating. “By targeting projects in proven producing areas with well-established infrastructure and lower cost structures, these projects enjoy attractive return potential at even today’s prices. And, with long-lived reserve potential and a significant drilling inventory, we also enjoy the flexibility to easily pursue additional opportunities well into the future as prices continue to rebound. We couldn’t be more pleased.”

Combined investment in the three fields by Aresco, its lead operating partners, and other capital partners have yielded:

25 additional drilling locations, which represents a 10-year + drilling inventory

400,000 barrels in additional Estimate Ultimate Recovery (EUR) potential (oil)

30+ Billion Cubic Feet (BCF) in additional Estimate Ultimate Recovery (EUR) potential (natural gas)

First quarter 2016 capital investment has also solidified working interest positions in two new development projects covering more than 7,000 net mineral acres in Louisiana and Texas. The new acreage adds up to 23 more drilling locations, which represents an approximate 15-year addition to Aresco’s existing drilling inventory. Two wells are scheduled to spud in 2Q16.

About Aresco LP

Aresco LP is a privately held Dallas-based exploration and production company actively engaged in developmental drilling, mineral leasing, and production acquisitions in conventional and unconventional oil plays throughout Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and the entire Gulf Coast region.
