The process of making cheese involves curdling milk, separating the curds from the whey, and then aging the curds to develop flavor and texture. Cheese is referenced in several passages, indicating its role in the diet and culture of biblical peoples.

Biblical References:

1. 1 Samuel 17:18 · In the account of David and Goliath, Jesse, David's father, instructs him to take provisions to his brothers who are on the battlefield. Among these provisions are "ten cheeses" for the commander of their unit. The passage reads: "Also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See if your brothers are well, and bring back some assurance from them." This reference highlights cheese as a valuable and portable food item, suitable for gifting and sustenance during military campaigns.

2. 2 Samuel 17:29 · During Absalom's rebellion, as David and his followers flee, they are provided with various supplies by supporters. Cheese is listed among these provisions: "honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from the herd, for David and his people to eat. For they said, 'The people have become hungry, exhausted, and thirsty in the wilderness.'" This passage underscores cheese as a nourishing food, capable of sustaining people in times of hardship.

3. Job 10:10 · In a metaphorical context, Job laments his suffering and uses the imagery of cheese-making to describe his creation: "Did You not pour me out like milk, and curdle me like cheese?" Here, the process of curdling milk into cheese is used to illustrate the formation and development of human life, reflecting the familiarity of this process to the ancient audience.

Cultural and Historical Context:

Cheese-making is an ancient practice, with evidence of its existence dating back thousands of years. In the biblical context, cheese would have been made from the milk of domesticated animals such as goats, sheep, and cows. The simplicity of the process made it accessible to many, and its ability to be stored and transported made it a practical food source.

Cheese was likely consumed fresh or aged, depending on the resources and preferences of the people. It served as a source of protein and fat, essential components of the diet in a region where agriculture and animal husbandry were central to daily life.

Symbolism and Significance:

In the Bible, cheese is not only a physical sustenance but also carries symbolic weight. It represents provision, hospitality, and the care of God and community for individuals. The sharing of cheese in the narratives of David and his men illustrates the bonds of loyalty and support among God's people.

The metaphorical use of cheese in Job's lamentation also points to the intricate and intentional design of human life by the Creator. The transformation of milk into cheese serves as a powerful image of God's creative work in forming and sustaining life.

Overall, cheese in the Bible is a testament to the agricultural practices of the time and serves as a reminder of God's provision and the interconnectedness of His people.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Cheese
is mentioned only three times in the Bible, and on each occasion under a different name in the Hebrew. Cheese is not at the present day common among the Bedouin Arabs, butter being decidedly preferred; but there is a substance closely corresponding to those mentioned in 1Sam 17, 2Sam 17, consisting of coagulated buttermilk, which is dried until it become quite hard, and is then ground; the Arabs eat it mixed with butter.
ATS Bible Dictionary
Cheese
Several times alluded to in Scripture, and still an important article of food in the East, 1 Samuel 17:18; 2 Samuel 17:29.
