The concept of "pieces" can be both literal and symbolic, representing division, destruction, or the breaking of something whole.

1. Pieces of Silver: One of the most notable references to "pieces" in the Bible is the thirty pieces of silver given to Judas Iscariot as payment for betraying Jesus Christ. This event is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew: "Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, 'What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him over to you?' So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver" (Matthew 26:14-15). This act of betrayal fulfilled the prophecy found in Zechariah 11:12-13, highlighting the theme of treachery and the value placed on the life of the Messiah.

2. Pieces of Bread: In the context of hospitality and provision, "pieces" can refer to portions of bread. In the account of the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus took five loaves and two fish, blessed them, and broke them into pieces to distribute to the crowd: "Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then He gave them to His disciples to distribute to the people" (Mark 6:41). This miracle underscores Jesus' divine provision and the abundance that comes from His blessing.

3. Pieces of Cloth: The Bible also uses "pieces" in the context of clothing and fabric. In the parable of the new patch on an old garment, Jesus teaches about the incompatibility of the old and new covenants: "No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, and a worse tear will result" (Mark 2:21). This illustration emphasizes the transformative nature of Christ's teachings and the need for a new approach to righteousness.

4. Pieces of Pottery: In the book of Job, the term "pieces" is used to describe broken pottery. After Job is afflicted with painful sores, he uses a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself: "Then Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself as he sat among the ashes" (Job 2:8). This imagery conveys Job's profound suffering and the depth of his physical and emotional anguish.

5. Pieces of Sacrifice: In the Old Testament sacrificial system, animals were often divided into pieces as part of the offering process. For example, in the covenant between God and Abram, animals were cut into pieces and laid opposite each other: "So the LORD said to him, 'Bring Me a heifer, a goat, and a ram, each three years old, along with a turtledove and a young pigeon.' Abram brought all these to Him, split each of them down the middle, and laid the halves opposite each other" (Genesis 15:9-10). This act symbolized the solemnity of the covenant and the seriousness of the commitment between God and Abram.

The use of "pieces" throughout the Bible serves as a powerful metaphor for division, sacrifice, and the fulfillment of divine purposes. Whether in the context of betrayal, provision, teaching, suffering, or covenant, the concept of "pieces" invites reflection on the brokenness and restoration found in the biblical narrative.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
(1) of silver. The word pieces is omitted in many passages, as Genesis 20:16; 37:28; 45:22, etc. The passage in Zechariah 11:12, 13 is quoted in the Gospel (Matthew 26:15), and from this we know that the word to be supplied is "shekels." In all these omissions we may thus warrantably supply this word.
(3.)
