Photo: Reuters[\/caption]\r\n\r\nThe World Meteorological Organisation <strong><a href="https:\/\/www.asiafinancial.com\/asia-is-warming-faster-hit-hardest-by-climate-disasters-wmo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted in a study in April<\/a><\/strong> that 80% of the climate and related extreme weather events in Asia in 2023 were caused by floods and storms. Those events caused the highest number of casualties and economic losses, the report said.\r\n\r\nWithin the region, India and China \u2014 two of the world\u2019s most populated countries \u2014 have been most vulnerable to torrential rainfall in recent years. That has led both countries to ask for <strong><a href="https:\/\/www.asiafinancial.com\/china-india-ask-rich-nations-for-trillions-in-climate-finance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">\u2018trillions\u2019 worth of climate finance<\/a><\/strong> from wealthier countries.\r\n\r\nIn China, extreme weather events led to economic losses of <strong><a href="https:\/\/www.asiafinancial.com\/extreme-weather-cost-china-more-than-10-billion-in-july-alone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than $10 billion last month alone<\/a><\/strong>. Those events caused the highest number of casualties and economic losses, the report said.</p> <p>Within the region, India and China — two of the world’s most populated countries — have been most vulnerable to torrential rainfall in recent years. That has led both countries to ask for <strong><a href="https://www.asiafinancial.com/china-india-ask-rich-nations-for-trillions-in-climate-finance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">‘trillions’ worth of climate finance</a></strong> from wealthier countries.</p> <p>In China, extreme weather events led to economic losses of <strong><a href="https://www.asiafinancial.com/extreme-weather-cost-china-more-than-10-billion-in-july-alone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than $10 billion last month alone</a></strong>. Excessive rain and related disasters accounted for 88% of those losses.</p> <p>Similarly, floods in North India in July last year caused losses worth at least $1.2 billion last year, according to <strong><a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/delhi-north-india-floods-cause-estimated-economic-loss-worth-rs-10000-15000-crore-11689597686835.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">government
