And it was pleasing<MH3190> in the sight<MH5869> of all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, and also<MH1571> in the sight<MH5869> of Saul&#8217;s<MH7586> servants<MH5650>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now it happened<MH1961> as they were coming<MH935>, when David<MH1732> returned<MH7725> from killing<MH5221> the Philistine<MH6430>, that the women<MH802> came<MH3318> out<MH3318> of all<MH3605> the cities<MH5892b> of Israel<MH3478>, singing<MH7891> and dancing<MH4246>, to meet<MH7122> King<MH4428> Saul<MH7586>, with tambourines<MH8596>, with joy<MH8057> and with <i>other</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>musical<MH7991b> instruments<MH7991b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The women<MH802> sang<MH6031b> as they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>played<MH7832>, and said<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;Saul<MH7586> has slain<MH5221> his thousands<MH505>, <t><p class="indent1">And David<MH1732> his ten<MH7233> thousands<MH7233>.&#8221; <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> became<MH2734> very<MH3966> angry<MH2734>, for this<MH2088> lyric<MH1697> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>displeased<MH7489a, 5869> him; and he said<MH559>, &#8220;They have given<MH5414> David<MH1732> <i>credit for</i> ten<MH7233> thousands<MH7233>, but to me they have given<MH5414> <i>credit for only</i> thousands<MH505>! Now <i>what</i> more<MH5750> can he have but the kingdom<MH4410>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And Saul<MH7586> eyed<MH5870b> David<MH1732> with<MH5870b> suspicion<MH5870b> from that day<MH3117> on. <p class="hdg">Saul Turns against David</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> on the next<MH4283> day<MH4283> that an evil<MH7451a> spirit<MH7307> from God<MH430> rushed<MH6743a> upon<MH5921> Saul<MH7586>, and he raved<MH5012> in the midst<MH8432> of the house<MH1004> while David<MH1732> was playing<MH5059> <i>the harp</i> with his hand<MH3027>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>as usual<MH3117>; and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>a spear<MH2595> <i>was</i> in Saul&#8217;s<MH7586> hand<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> hurled<MH2904> the spear<MH2595>, for he thought<MH559>, &#8220;I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>pin<MH5221> David<MH1732> to the wall<MH7023>.&#8221; But David<MH1732> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>escaped<MH5437> from his presence<MH6440>, twice<MH6471>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now Saul<MH7586> was<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> of David<MH1732>, because<MH3588> the LORD<MH3068> was with him but had left<MH5493> Saul<MH7586>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So Saul<MH7586> removed<MH5493> him from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>his presence<MH5973> and appointed<MH7760> him as his commander<MH8269> of a thousand<MH505>; and he went<MH3318> out<MH3318> and came<MH935> in<MH935> before<MH6440> the people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>David<MH1732> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>successful<MH7919a> in all<MH3605> his ways<MH1870>, for the LORD<MH3068> <i>was</i> with him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>When Saul<MH7586> saw<MH7200> that he was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>very<MH3966> successful<MH7919a>, he was afraid<MH1481c> of him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> and Judah<MH3063> loved<MH157> David<MH1732>, for he would go<MH3318> out<MH3318> <i>to battle</i> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>return<MH935> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>before<MH6440> them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, &#8220;Here<MH2009> is my older<MH1419> daughter<MH1323> Merab<MH4764>; I will give<MH5414> her to you as a wife<MH802>, only<MH389> be a valiant<MH2428> man<MH1121> for me and fight<MH3898a> the LORD&#8217;S<MH3068> battles<MH4421>.&#8221; For Saul<MH7586> thought<MH559>, &#8220;My hand<MH3027> shall not be against him, but let the hand<MH3027> of the Philistines<MH6430> be against him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Saul<MH7586>, &#8220;Who<MH4310> am I, and who<MH4310> is my family<MH2416a>, <i>or</i> my father&#8217;s<MH1> family<MH4940> in Israel<MH3478>, that I should be the king&#8217;s<MH4428> son-in-law<MH2860a>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> at the time<MH6256> that Merab<MH4764>, Saul&#8217;s<MH7586> daughter<MH1323>, was to be given<MH5414> to David<MH1732>, that she was given<MH5414> <i>instead</i> to Adriel<MH5741> the Meholathite<MH4259> as a wife<MH802>. <p class="hdg">David Marries Saul&#8217;s Daughter</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Now Michal<MH4324>, Saul&#8217;s<MH7586> daughter<MH1323>, loved<MH157> David<MH1732>. When they informed<MH5046> Saul<MH7586>, the thing<MH1697> was<MH3474> pleasing<MH3474> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>For Saul<MH7586> thought<MH559>, &#8220;I will give<MH5414> her to him so that she may become<MH1961> a trap<MH4170> for him, and that the hand<MH3027> of the Philistines<MH6430> may be against him.&#8221; Therefore Saul<MH7586> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, &#8220;For a second<MH8147> time<MH8147> you may become<MH2859> my son-in-law<MH2859>, today<MH3117>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> commanded<MH6680> his servants<MH5650>, &#8220;Speak<MH1696> to David<MH1732> in secret<MH3909>, saying<MH559>, &#8216;Behold<MH2009>, the king<MH4428> delights<MH2654a> in you, and all<MH3605> his servants<MH5650> love<MH157> you; now<MH6258> then, become<MH2859> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> son-in-law<MH2859>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>So Saul&#8217;s<MH7586> servants<MH5650> spoke<MH1696> these<MH428> words<MH1697> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>to David<MH1732>. But David<MH1732> said<MH559>, &#8220;Is<MH7043> it trivial<MH7043> in your sight<MH5869> to become<MH2859> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> son-in-law<MH2859>, since I am<MH7326> <i>only</i> a poor<MH7326> man<MH376> and insignificant<MH7034>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then Saul&#8217;s<MH7586> servants<MH5650> reported<MH5046> to him, saying, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>These<MH428> are the words<MH1697> David<MH1732> spoke<MH1696>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Saul<MH7586> then said<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> you shall say<MH559> to David<MH1732>: &#8216;The king<MH4428> does not desire<MH2656> any dowry<MH4119> except<MH3588> a hundred<MH3967> foreskins<MH6190> of the Philistines<MH6430>, to take<MH5358> vengeance<MH5358> on the king&#8217;s<MH4428> enemies<MH340>.&#8217;&#8221; But Saul<MH7586> plotted<MH2803> to have David<MH1732> fall<MH5307> by the hand<MH3027> of the Philistines<MH6430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>When his servants<MH5650> told<MH5046> David<MH1732> these<MH428> words<MH1697>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>it pleased<MH3474, 5869> David<MH1732> to become<MH2859> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> son-in-law<MH2859>. So <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>before the time<MH3117> had expired<MH4390>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>David<MH1732> set<MH6965> out<MH6965> and went<MH1980>, he and his men<MH376>, and fatally<MH5221> struck<MH5221> two hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> among the Philistines<MH6430>. Then David<MH1732> brought<MH935> their foreskins<MH6190>, and they presented<MH4390> all<MH4390> <i>two hundred</i> of them to the king<MH4428>, so that he might become<MH2859> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> son-in-law<MH2859>. And Saul<MH7586> gave<MH5414> him his daughter<MH1323> Michal<MH4324> as a wife<MH802>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>When Saul<MH7586> saw<MH7200> and realized<MH3045> that the LORD<MH3068> was with David<MH1732>, and <i>that</i> Michal<MH4324>, Saul&#8217;s<MH7586> daughter<MH1323>, loved<MH157> him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>then Saul<MH7586> was<MH3372a> even<MH5750> more<MH3254> afraid<MH3372a> of David<MH1732>. So Saul<MH7586> was David&#8217;s<MH1732> enemy<MH340> continually<MH3605, 3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/18-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then the commanders<MH8269> of the Philistines<MH6430> went<MH3318> <i>to battle,</i> and it happened<MH1961> as often<MH1767> as they went<MH3318> out<MH3318>, that David<MH1732> was<MH7919a> more<MH4480> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>successful<MH7919a> than<MH4480> all<MH3605> the servants<MH5650> of Saul<MH7586>.
