For years, he struggled with recurring droughts that would stretch on for six to seven challenging months. To combat this pressing issue, Hector previously relied on water pumps that draw water from a nearby lake into a reservoir that helped irrigate his farm. However, this solution came at a high cost and was far from environmentally friendly, as it depended on gasoline to operate.</p> <p>In 2021, Héctor discovered a more sustainable solution. Thanks to financing secured through the Banfondesa Renovable green credit line, supported by the European Investment Bank, he installed a solar-powered water pump. Now, as soon as the sun rises, the pump is powered and supplies his farm with water. This transformative solution not only eases Hector's daily life but has also significantly increased his agricultural yields. class="eib-card-text"> <p>This short film tells the story of an innovative mobile banking service, M-BIRR, provided by Ethiopian banks and Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), that allows locals to make financial transactions by simply using their phone. M-BIRR, which that takes its name from the birr, the country’s currency, is a fast, convenient and reliable way of sending and receiving money, paying for goods in shops or buying airline tickets, day and night, with a few clicks. This service is part of the mobile phenomenon that is transforming finances in Africa, where logistics is often difficult and people have to travel and queue long hours to access basic services.</p> <p><em>“I think it is particularly encouraging because it combines the idea of inclusion with technology and open new markets, new possibilities for people, so this is something that revolutionises the access to the labour market and to entrepreneurial activities. Following the Russian aggression in his own county, he saw the frontline approach his coffee plant in March 2022. Anton shares with us how he managed to relocate within a few days his business to Western Ukraine, with the support of a platform by the Bank Lviv and the solidarity of his competitors.</p> <p>Bank Lviv has created a platform to support small businesses that were forced to relocate because of the war. The platform offers banking and business services. The setting up of the platform received support from the EIB ENTAFI Progamme. The EIB typically conducts such operations via microfinance investment funds, in partnership with the EIF.</p> <p>In addition, the EIF provides funding and portfolio guarantees to a variety of financial institutions.
