Such routines promote thinking skills, call for collaboration and sharing of ideas, and above all, make thinking and learning visible. Visual thinking routines were implemented in the teaching methodology graduate course at the American University in Dubai. The study used mixed methods. It was guided by the following two research questions: 1). To what extent do visual thinking inspire learning in the classroom, and make time for students’ questions, contributions, and thinking? 2). How do visual thinking routines inspire learning in the classroom and make time for students’ questions, contributions, and thinking? Eight student teachers enrolled in the teaching methodology course at the American University in Dubai (Spring 2017) participated in the following study. First, they completed a survey that measured to what degree they believed visual thinking routines inspired learning in the classroom and made time for students’ questions, contributions, and thinking. In order to build on the results from the quantitative phase, the student teachers were next involved in a qualitative data collection phase, where they had to answer the question: How do visual thinking routines inspire learning in the classroom and make time for students’ questions, contributions, and thinking? Results revealed that the implementation of visual thinking routines in the classroom strongly inspire learning in the classroom and make time for students’ questions, contributions, and thinking. In addition, student teachers explained how visual thinking routines allow for organization, variety, thinking, and documentation. As with all original, new, and unique resources, visual thinking routines are not free of challenges. To make the most of this useful and valued resource, educators, need to comprehend, model and spread an awareness of the effective ways of using such routines in the classroom. It is crucial that such routines become part of the curriculum to allow for and document students’ questions, contributions, and thinking. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=classroom%20display" title="classroom display">classroom display</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=student%20engagement" title=" student engagement"> student engagement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thinking%20classroom" title=" thinking classroom"> thinking classroom</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20thinking%20routines" title=" visual thinking routines"> visual thinking routines</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/72365/visual-thinking-routines-a-mixed-methods-approach-applied-to-student-teachers-at-the-american-university-in-dubai" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/72365.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">227</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3068</span> Visual and Verbal Imagination in a Bilingual Context</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Erzsebet%20Gulyas">Erzsebet Gulyas</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Our inner world, our imagination, and our way of thinking are invisible and inaudible to others, but they influence our behavior. The SDGs, as well as regional initiatives the like European Green Deal, as ambitious as they are, put an emphasis on innovatively tackling threats posed by climate change regionally. While co-creational approaches are being propagated, there is no reference blueprint for how potential solutions, particularly nature-based solutions, may be developed and implemented within urban-settings. Using a single case study in Zagreb, Croatia, this paper proposes a workshop-tool for a Living Lab as a Service model for sustainable Nature-Based-Thinking, Nature–Centred-Design and Nature based solutions. The approach is based on a co-creational methodology developed through literature synthesis, expert interviews, focus group discussions, surveys and synthesized through rigorous research analysis and participatory observation. The ensuing tool involves workshop-processes, tested with through-the-process identified stakeholders with distinctive roles and functions. The resulting framework proposes a Nature-Based-Centred-Thinking process tool involving ‘green’ routines supported by a focal unit and a collaborative network, and that allows for the development of nature-based solutions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=living%20labs" title="living labs">living labs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature-based%20solutions" title=" nature-based solutions"> nature-based solutions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature-%20based%20design" title=" nature- based design"> nature- based design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=innovation%20processes" title=" innovation processes"> innovation processes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=innovation%20routines%20and%20tools" title=" innovation routines and tools"> innovation routines and tools</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176147/living-lab-as-a-service-developing-context-induced-co-creational-innovation-routines-as-a-process-tool-for-nature-based-solutions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176147.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">76</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3065</span> Offering a Model for Selecting the Most Suitable Type of Thinking for Managers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=H.%20Emari">H. No special applied frame has been presented for this thinking. This paper presents a theoretical framework for the thinking type of a manager by making a historical research and studying the scientific documents about thinking of a strategist. In the new theoretical framework it has been tried to suggest the best type of thinking for a strategist after analyzing the environment of his decisions. So, in this framework, the traditional viewpoint about strategic thinking, which has considered it as a special type of right-brain thinking against other types of right-brain thinking and suggested it for a strategist, was put aside and suggests that the strategist should use a suitable type of thinking under different conditions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=strategic%20thinking" title="strategic thinking">strategic thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=systemic%20thinking" title=" systemic thinking"> systemic thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lateral%20thinking" title=" lateral thinking"> lateral thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intuitive%20thinking" title=" intuitive thinking"> intuitive thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hybrid%20thinking" title=" hybrid thinking"> hybrid thinking</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/11512/offering-a-model-for-selecting-the-most-suitable-type-of-thinking-for-managers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/11512.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">331</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3064</span> Idea Thinking Integrated Typology Technology of 6 Sigma, TRIZ, and Visual Planning</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dongkyu%20Lee">Dongkyu Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Doan-Quoc%20Hoan"> Doan-Quoc Hoan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Soomi%20Shin"> Soomi Shin</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study shows an easy R&D innovation-activity methodology which embodies the methodological strategy of supplementing the disadvantages of 6 sigma by TRIZ and considers the acceptance of employees through the change in the concept of innovation-activity methodology from the focus of chapter development to that of stepwise executed task. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=idea%20thinking" title="idea thinking">idea thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=6%20sigma" title=" 6 sigma"> 6 sigma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=triz" title=" triz"> triz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20planning" title=" visual planning"> visual planning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=R%26D" title=" R&amp;D"> R&amp;D</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=innovation-activity" title=" innovation-activity"> innovation-activity</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/31368/idea-thinking-integrated-typology-technology-of-6-sigma-triz-and-visual-planning" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/31368.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">501</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3063</span> Habits: Theoretical Foundations and a Conceptual Framework on a Managerial Trap and Chance</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=K.%20Pi%C3%B3rkowska">K. To realize this aim, the following sections have been developed: (1) habits’ origins, (2) habits – cognitive constellations, (3) interrelationships between habits and mental representations, intentions, (4) habits and organizational routines, and (5) habits and routines linkages with adaptation. The conclusions that have been made support recent and current studies linking the level of individual heterogeneous agents with the level of macro (organizational) outcomes. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=behaviorism" title="behaviorism">behaviorism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=habits" title=" habits"> habits</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=micro-foundations" title=" micro-foundations"> micro-foundations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=routines" title=" routines"> routines</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55421/habits-theoretical-foundations-and-a-conceptual-framework-on-a-managerial-trap-and-chance" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55421.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">258</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3062</span> Using Thinking Blocks to Encourage the Use of Higher Order Thinking Skills among Students When Solving Problems on Fractions </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abdul%20Halim%20Abdullah">Abdul Halim Abdullah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nur%20Liyana%20Zainal%20Abidin"> Nur Liyana Zainal Abidin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mahani%20Mokhtar"> Mahani Mokhtar</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Problem-solving is an activity which can encourage students to use Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Learning fractions can be challenging for students since empirical evidence shows that students experience difficulties in solving the fraction problems. However, visual methods can help students to overcome the difficulties since the methods help students to make meaningful visual representations and link abstract concepts in Mathematics. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether there were any changes in students&rsquo; HOTS at the four highest levels when learning the fractions by using Thinking Blocks. 54 students participated in a quasi-experiment using pre-tests and post-tests. Students were divided into two groups. The experimental group (n=32) received a treatment to improve the students&rsquo; HOTS and the other group acted as the control group (n=22) which used a traditional method. Data were analysed by using Mann-Whitney test. The results indicated that during post-test, students who used Thinking Blocks showed significant improvement in their HOTS level (p=0.000). In addition, the results of post-test also showed that the students&rsquo; performance improved significantly at the four highest levels of HOTS; namely, application (p=0.001), analyse (p=0.000), evaluate (p=0.000), and create (p=0.000). Therefore, it can be concluded that Thinking Blocks can effectively encourage students to use the four highest levels of HOTS which consequently enable them to solve fractions problems successfully. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thinking%20Blocks" title="Thinking Blocks">Thinking Blocks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Higher%20Order%20Thinking%20Skills%20%28HOTS%29" title=" Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)"> Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fractions" title=" fractions"> fractions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=problem%20solving" title=" problem solving"> problem solving</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55882/using-thinking-blocks-to-encourage-the-use-of-higher-order-thinking-skills-among-students-when-solving-problems-on-fractions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55882.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">270</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3061</span> Research on Detection of Web Page Visual Salience Region Based on Eye Tracker and Spectral Residual Model</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Xiaoying%20Guo">Xiaoying Guo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Xiangyun%20Wang"> Xiangyun Wang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chunhua%20Jia"> Chunhua Jia</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Web page has been one of the most important way of knowing the world. Humans catch a lot of information from it everyday. Thus, understanding where human looks when they surfing the web pages is rather important. In normal scenes, the down-top features and top-down tasks significantly affect humans’ eye movement. In this paper, we investigated if the conventional visual salience algorithm can properly predict humans’ visual attractive region when they viewing the web pages. First, we obtained the eye movement data when the participants viewing the web pages using an eye tracker. By the analysis of eye movement data, we studied the influence of visual saliency and thinking way on eye-movement pattern. The analysis result showed that thinking way affect human’ eye-movement pattern much more than visual saliency. Second, we compared the results of web page visual salience region extracted by Itti model and Spectral Residual (SR) model. The results showed that Spectral Residual (SR) model performs superior than Itti model by comparison with the heat map from eye movements. Considering the influence of mind habit on humans’ visual region of interest, we introduced one of the most important cue in mind habit-fixation position to improved the SR model. The result showed that the improved SR model can better predict the human visual region of interest in web pages. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=web%20page%20salience%20region" title="web page salience region">web page salience region</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=eye-tracker" title=" eye-tracker"> eye-tracker</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spectral%20residual" title=" spectral residual"> spectral residual</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20salience" title=" visual salience"> visual salience</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74168/research-on-detection-of-web-page-visual-salience-region-based-on-eye-tracker-and-spectral-residual-model" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74168.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">276</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3060</span> Architecture of a Preliminary Course on Computational Thinking</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mintu%20Philip">Mintu Philip</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Renumol%20V.%20G."> Renumol V. Many of the introductory programming courses fail because student concentrate mainly on writing programs using a programming language rather than involving in problem solving. Computational thinking is a general approach to solve problems. This paper proposes a new preliminary course that aims to develop computational thinking skills in students, which may help them to become good programmers. The proposed course is designed based on the four basic components of computational thinking - abstract thinking, logical thinking, modeling thinking and constructive thinking. In this course, students are engaged in hands-on problem solving activities using a new problem solving model proposed in this paper. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computational%20thinking" title="computational thinking">computational thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computing%20education" title=" computing education"> computing education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=abstraction" title=" abstraction"> abstraction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=constructive%20thinking" title=" constructive thinking"> constructive thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=modelling%20thinking" title=" modelling thinking "> modelling thinking </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17479/architecture-of-a-preliminary-course-on-computational-thinking" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17479.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">456</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3059</span> A Qualitative Study of the Efficacy of Teaching for Conceptual Understanding to Enhance Confidence and Engagement in Early Mathematics </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nigel%20P.%20Coutts">Nigel P. Worried by this, we have explored teaching mathematics for understanding, fluency, and confidence. We investigated strategies to engage students with the beauty of mathematics, moving them beyond mimicry and memorization. The result is an integrated pedagogy and curriculum arrangement which combines concept-based mathematics with Number Talks, Visible Thinking Routines, and Teaching for Understanding. Our qualitative research shows that students self-report greater self-confidence and heightened engagement with mathematical thinking. Teacher reflections on student learning echo this finding. As a result of this, we advocate for teacher training in the implementation of a concept-based curriculum supplemented with Number Talk strategies. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mathematical%20thinking" title="mathematical thinking">mathematical thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=teaching%20for%20understanding" title=" teaching for understanding"> teaching for understanding</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=student%20confidence" title=" student confidence"> student confidence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=concept-based%20learning" title=" concept-based learning"> concept-based learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=engagement" title=" engagement"> engagement</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113685/a-qualitative-study-of-the-efficacy-of-teaching-for-conceptual-understanding-to-enhance-confidence-and-engagement-in-early-mathematics" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113685.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">154</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3058</span> Developing Innovative Participatory Visual Toolkits for Community Story Collection</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jiawei%20Dai">Jiawei Dai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Xinrong%20Li"> Xinrong Li</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yulong%20Sun"> Yulong Sun</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yunxiao%20Hao"> Yunxiao Hao</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Recently, participatory approaches have become popular in a variety of fields, including social work, community, and population health, as important research tools for researchers to understand and immerse communities and conceptualize social phenomena. The participatory visual research methods promote the diversification and depth of the exploration process and communication forms to support the feasibility and practicality of the scheme, which helps to further inspire designers and avoid blind spots caused by the solidification of single thinking. This paper focuses on how to develop visual toolkits for participatory methods to assist and shape crowd participation and trigger idea generation in community issues. This project helps to verify the value of participatory visual tools in shaping participation and arousing expression, which provides support for gaining community diversity insights and community problem-solving. However, as time goes by, literacy has started to refer to reading and writing at a level adequate for communication, or at a level that lets one understand and communicate ideas in a literate society, so as to take part in that society. Meanwhile, visual literacy is a set of abilities that enables an individual to effectively find, interpret, evaluate, use, and create images and visual media. This study aims to investigate the collaboration between visual literacy and literature, eventually to determine how visual literacy can enhance learner’s ability to comprehend literary texts such as poems and short stories and develop his intellectuality, especially critical and creative thinking skills, and also to find out the different impacts of literature in visual literacy at four levels of education: pre-school, primary and secondary schools and university. This study is based on Malaysian environment and involves a qualitative method consisting of observation and interviews. The initial findings show that people with different levels of education grasp visual literacy differently but all levels show outstanding impacts of using literature. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20literacy" title="visual literacy">visual literacy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=literature" title=" literature"> literature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=language%20studies" title=" language studies"> language studies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=higher%20education" title=" higher education"> higher education</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/1924/promoting-visual-literacy-from-primary-to-tertiary-levels-through-literature" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/1924.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">373</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3056</span> The Contemporary Visual Spectacle: Critical Visual Literacy</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lai-Fen%20Yang">Lai-Fen Yang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this increasingly visual world, how can we best decipher and understand the many ways that our everyday lives are organized around looking practices and the many images we encounter each day? Visual Arts are known for art forms such as drawing, painting, and photography, just to name a few. At the same time, Visual Literacy is known for learning through images. The Visual Literacy phenomenon may be attributed to the use of images was first established for creating memories and enjoyment. As time evolved, images became the center and essential means of making contact between people. Gradually, images became a means for interpreting and understanding words through visuals, that being Visual Arts. The purpose of this study is to present the analogy of the two terms Visual Arts and Visual Literacy, which are defined and compared through early practicing visual artists as well as relevant researchers to reveal how they interrelate with one another. This is a qualitative study that uses an interpretive approach as it seeks to understand and explain the interest of the study. The results reveal correspondence of the analogy between the two terms through various writers of early and recent years. A second search was implemented with critical thinking of nursing students Socratic questioning, which resulted in two articles being used. Conclusion: Unfolding simulations increase nursing students' critical thinking, especially during the briefing (pre-briefing and debriefing) phases, where most learning occurs. In addition, the use of Socratic questions during the briefing phases motivates other questions, helps the student analyze and critique their thinking, and assists educators in probing students' thinking, which further increases critical thinking. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=briefing" title="briefing">briefing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=critical%20thinking" title=" critical thinking"> critical thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Socratic%20thinking" title=" Socratic thinking"> Socratic thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unfolding%20simulations" title=" unfolding simulations"> unfolding simulations</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146324/unfolding-simulations-with-the-use-of-socratic-questioning-increases-critical-thinking-in-nursing-students" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146324.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">183</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3048</span> Maintaining Healthy Body Weight: Beyond Exercise Routines</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nahwera%20L.">Nahwera L.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Constance%20A.%20N.%20Nsibamb"> Constance A. Studies have shown that physical inactivity leads to overweight and obesity, a risk factor for non-communicable diseases and a public health challenge. Health clubs provide therapeutic exercises to clients desiring to reduce their weight; however, the exercise routines offered in these health clubs are insufficient to reduce their body weight. A convenient sample of 100 clients. Exercise routines were determined using a questionnaire. Height, weight, waist, and hip circumferences were measured. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) assessed body weight status. About 75% of clients exercised three or more times per week; 96% participated in modern intensity exercises for 30 minutes, aerobic dance (88%), treadmill (56%), cycling (51%), rope skipping (45%), and 14% in strengthening activities. The BMI of male and female clients was 64.2% and 83.0%, respectively. There was no significant correlation (p≤0.05) between BMI and WHR (p=0.336), although there was a significant correlation between BMI and waist circumference (p=0.000). There was no significant relationship between BMI and WHR for males (p= .336) and between BMI and WHR for females (p=.806). Although most clients visiting health clubs meet the recommended frequency, intensity, and duration of exercise, they are overweight and obese. Appropriate exercise and nutritional programs should be incorporated into health clubs offering therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises to clients. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Body%20weight%20status" title="Body weight status">Body weight status</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=exercise%20routines" title=" exercise routines"> exercise routines</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=health%20clubs" title=" health clubs"> health clubs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=exercises" title=" exercises"> exercises</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/158969/maintaining-healthy-body-weight-beyond-exercise-routines" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/158969.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">85</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3047</span> Analyzing Sociocultural Factors Shaping Architects’ Construction Material Choices: The Case of Jordan</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maiss%20Razem">Maiss Razem</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The construction sector is considered a major consumer of materials that undergoes processes of extraction, processing, transportation, and maintaining when used in buildings. Several metrics have been devised to capture the environmental impact of the materials consumed during construction using lifecycle thinking. Rarely has the materiality of this sector been explored qualitatively and systemically. This paper aims to explore socio-cultural forces that drive the use of certain materials in the Jordanian construction industry, using practice theory as a heuristic method of analysis, more specifically Shove et al. three-element model. By conducting semi-structured interviews with architects, the results unravel contextually embedded routines when determining qualities of three materialities highlighted herein; stone, glass and spatial openness. The study highlights the inadequacy of only using efficiency as a quantitative metric of sustainable materials and argues for the need to link material consumption with socio-economic, cultural, and aesthetic driving forces. The operationalization of practice theory by tracing materials’ lifetimes as they integrate with competencies and meanings captures dynamic engagements through the analyzed routines of actors in the construction practice. This study can offer policymakers better-nuanced representation to green this sector beyond efficiency rhetoric and quantitative metrics. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=architects%27%20practices" title="architects&#039; practices">architects&#039; practices</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=construction%20materials" title=" construction materials"> construction materials</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jordan" title=" Jordan"> Jordan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=practice%20theory" title=" practice theory"> practice theory</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/138788/analyzing-sociocultural-factors-shaping-architects-construction-material-choices-the-case-of-jordan" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/138788.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">169</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3046</span> An Empirical Study of the Effect of Robot Programming Education on the Computational Thinking of Young Children: The Role of Flowcharts</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wei%20Sun">Wei Sun</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yan%20Dong"> Yan Dong</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> There is an increasing interest in introducing computational thinking at an early age. Computational thinking, like mathematical thinking, engineering thinking, and scientific thinking, is a kind of analytical thinking. Learning computational thinking skills is not only to improve technological literacy, but also allows learners to equip with practicable skills such as problem-solving skills. As people realize the importance of computational thinking, the field of educational technology faces a problem: how to choose appropriate tools and activities to help students develop computational thinking skills. Robots are gradually becoming a popular teaching tool, as robots provide a tangible way for young children to access to technology, and controlling a robot through programming offers them opportunities to engage in developing computational thinking. This study explores whether the introduction of flowcharts into the robotics programming courses can help children convert natural language into a programming language more easily, and then to better cultivate their computational thinking skills. An experimental study was adopted with a sample of children ages six to seven (N = 16) participated, and a one-meter-tall humanoid robot was used as the teaching tool. Results show that children can master basic programming concepts through robotic courses. Children&#39;s computational thinking has been significantly improved. Besides, results suggest that flowcharts do have an impact on young children&rsquo;s computational thinking skills development, but it only has a significant effect on the &quot;sequencing&quot; and &quot;correspondence&quot; skills. Overall, the study demonstrates that the humanoid robot and flowcharts have qualities that foster young children to learn programming and develop computational thinking skills. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=robotics" title="robotics">robotics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computational%20thinking" title=" computational thinking"> computational thinking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=programming" title=" programming"> programming</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=young%20children" title=" young children"> young children</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flow%20chart" title=" flow chart"> flow chart</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/129881/an-empirical-study-of-the-effect-of-robot-programming-education-on-the-computational-thinking-of-young-children-the-role-of-flowcharts" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/129881.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">147</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3045</span> The Investigation on Pre-Service Teachers&#039; Critical Thinking Dispositions in Terms of Several Variables</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=C%C3%BCneyit%20Akar">Cüneyit Akar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mustafa%20Ba%C5%9Faran"> Mustafa Başaran</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ufuk%20Ulu%C3%A7%C4%B1nar"> Ufuk Uluçınar</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The purpose of this research is to examine the critical thinking dispositions of pre-service teachers in terms of several variables. In the line of this aim, we have investigated what their levels of critical thinking dispositions and whether there is any significant different in their critical thinking dispositions. Also, we have examined the relations between their critical thinking dispositions and their parents’ education statues, the number of their siblings, family income levels, and their religiosity level. 202 pre-service teachers who are studying at different departments at faculty of education at Uşak University participated in this research. In study, critical thinking dispositions scale by one of researchers was utilized and its validity and reliability was performed. The findings indicate that the level of their critical thinking dispositions was found to be .376 (arithmetic mean). On the other hand, we found that there is no significant difference in terms of their gender and the department at which they are studying. Furthermore, although there aren’t significant relationships between critical thinking dispositions and their mother education statues, their income levels, their religiosity levels and the number of their siblings; there is any significant positively at low level the relation between thinking dispositions and father educational statues. The findings obtained will be discussed together with literature and other research’ results. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=preservice%20teachers" title="preservice teachers">preservice teachers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=critical%20thinking%20dispositions" title=" critical thinking dispositions"> critical thinking dispositions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pedagogy" title=" pedagogy"> pedagogy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=education" title=" education"> education</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22052/the-investigation-on-pre-service-teachers-critical-thinking-dispositions-in-terms-of-several-variables" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22052.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">495</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3044</span> Visual Identity Components of Tourist Destination</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Petra%20Barisic">Petra Barisic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zrinka%20Blazevic"> Zrinka Blazevic</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the world of modern communications, visual identity has predominant influence on the overall success of tourist destinations, but despite of these, the problem of designing thriving tourist destination visual identity and their components are hardly addressed. Many studies have been conducted on geometric thinking levels and they have taken their place in teaching curricula over time. It is thought that geometric thinking levels, which have become so important in teaching, can be examined in depth. In order to make an in-depth analysis, it was decided that the most appropriate management was discourse analysis. In this study, the focus is on examining the geometric thinking levels of 8th grade students from a discursive point of view. Sfard (2008)'s "Commognitive" theory will be used to conduct discursive analysis. The "Global Van Hiele Questionnaire" created by Patkin (2014) and translated into Turkish for this research will be used in the research. The "Global Van Hiele Questionnaire" contains questions from the sub-learning domain of triangles and quadrilaterals, circles and geometric objects. It has a wider scope than many "Van Hiele Questionnaires". “Global Van Hiele Questionnaire” will be applied to 8th grade students. Then, the geometric thinking levels of the students will be determined and interviews will be held with two students from each of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd levels. The interviews will be recorded and the students' discourses will be examined. By evaluating the relations between the students' geometric thinking levels and their discourses, it will be examined how much their discourse reflects their level of thinking. In this way, it is thought that students' geometric thinking processes can be better understood. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mathematical%20discourses" title="mathematical discourses">mathematical discourses</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=commognitive%20framework" title=" commognitive framework"> commognitive framework</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geometric%20thinking%20levels" title=" geometric thinking levels"> geometric thinking levels</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=van%20hiele" title=" van hiele"> van hiele</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/148315/discursively-examination-of-8th-grade-students-geometric-thinking-levels" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/148315.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">129</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3042</span> To Estimate the Association between Visual Stress and Visual Perceptual Skills</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vijay%20Reena%20Durai">Vijay Reena Durai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Krithica%20Srinivasan"> Krithica Srinivasan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Introduction: The two fundamental skills involved in the growth and wellbeing of any child can be categorized into visual motor and perceptual skills. Visual stress is a disorder which is characterized by visual discomfort, blurred vision, misspelling words, skipping lines, letters bunching together. There is a need to understand the deficits in perceptual skills among children with visual stress. Aim: To estimate the association between visual stress and visual perceptual skills Objective: To compare visual perceptual skills of children with and without visual stress Methodology: Children between 8 to 15 years of age participated in this cross-sectional study. All children with monocular visual acuity better than or equal to 6/6 were included. Visual perceptual skills were measured using test for visual perceptual skills (TVPS) tool. Reading speed was measured with the chosen colored overlay using Wilkins reading chart and pattern glare score was estimated using a 3cpd gratings. Visual stress was defined as change in reading speed of greater than or equal to 10% and a pattern glare score of greater than or equal to 4. Results: 252 children participated in this study and the male: female ratio of 3:2. Majority of the children preferred Magenta (28%) and Yellow (25%) colored overlay for reading. There was a significant difference between the two groups (MD=1.24±0.6) (p<0.04, 95% CI 0.01-2.43) only in the sequential memory skills. The prevalence of visual stress in this group was found to be 31% (n=78). Binary logistic regression showed that odds ratio of having poor visual perceptual skills was OR: 2.85 (95% CI 1.08-7.49) among children with visual stress. Conclusion: Children with visual stress are found to have three times poorer visual perceptual skills than children without visual stress. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20stress" title="visual stress">visual stress</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20perceptual%20skills" title=" visual perceptual skills"> visual perceptual skills</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=colored%20overlay" title=" colored overlay"> colored overlay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pattern%20glare" title=" pattern glare"> pattern glare</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41580/to-estimate-the-association-between-visual-stress-and-visual-perceptual-skills" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41580.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">388</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3041</span> Integrations of Students&#039; Learning Achievements and Their Analytical Thinking Abilities with the Problem-Based Learning and the Concept Mapping Instructional Methods on Gene and Chromosome Issue at the 12th Grade Level</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Waraporn%20Thaimit">Waraporn Thaimit</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yuwadee%20Insamran"> Yuwadee Insamran</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Natchanok%20Jansawang"> Natchanok Jansawang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Focusing on Analytical Thinking and Learning Achievement are the critical component of visual thinking that gives one the ability to solve problems quickly and effectively that allows to complex problems into components, and the result had been achieved or acquired form of the subject students of which resulted in changes within the individual as a result of activity in learning.
