The concept of "best" is frequently associated with offerings, choices, and the pursuit of righteousness in the Scriptures.

Offerings and Sacrifices

In the Old Testament, the Israelites were commanded to offer the best of their flocks and produce to God as a sign of reverence and obedience. This is evident in the instructions given for sacrifices, where God required offerings without blemish. In Leviticus 22:21, it is stated, "When anyone presents a fellowship offering to the LORD to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering from the herd or flock, it must be without blemish to be acceptable; there must be no defect in it." The emphasis on offering the best reflects the importance of giving God what is most valuable and pure.

Firstfruits

The principle of giving the best is also seen in the offering of firstfruits. The Israelites were instructed to bring the first and best of their harvest to the Lord. Proverbs 3:9-10 highlights this practice: "Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your harvest; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine." This act of giving the best of one's produce was a demonstration of trust in God's provision and acknowledgment of His sovereignty.

Moral and Spiritual Excellence

The pursuit of the best is not limited to material offerings but extends to moral and spiritual excellence. Believers are encouraged to seek what is best in their conduct and relationships. Philippians 1:9-10 states, "And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ." Here, the apostle Paul emphasizes the importance of discerning and choosing what is best in order to live a life that is pleasing to God.

The Best in Relationships

In relationships, the Bible encourages believers to seek the best for others, reflecting the love and selflessness of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, the qualities of love are described, highlighting the best way to interact with others: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

God's Best for Humanity

Ultimately, the Bible reveals that God's best for humanity is found in the person and work of Jesus Christ. John 3:16 declares, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." In giving His Son, God provided the best and most perfect gift, offering salvation and eternal life to all who believe.

The concept of "best" in the Bible underscores the call to offer God the highest quality of our lives, to pursue moral and spiritual excellence, and to seek the well-being of others, all while recognizing and receiving the ultimate gift of God's best through Jesus Christ.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1.
