He was 58.</p> <p>According to the Times, Carr collapsed at the newspaper's office, not long after hosting a Times Talk where he interviewed NSA leaker Edward Snowden, journalists Glenn Greenwald and documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras.</p> <p>In a statement, New York Times Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. called Carr "one of the most gifted journalists who has ever worked at The New York Times."</p> <p>"He combined formidable talent as a reporter with acute judgment to become an indispensable guide to modern media. But his friends at The Times and beyond will remember him as a unique human being – full of life and energy, funny, loyal and lovable. An irreplaceable talent, he will be missed by everyone who works for The Times and everyone who reads it," Sulzberger said.</p> <p>Executive Editor Dean Baquet notified staff of the news in an email Thursday evening:</p> <blockquote> <p>Dear Colleagues,</p> <p>I am sorry to have to tell you that our wonderful, esteemed colleague David Carr died suddenly tonight after collapsing in the newsroom. A group of us were with his wife, Jill, and one of his daughters, at the hospital. His daughter Erin said he was special, and that he was.</p> <p>He was the finest media reporter of his generation, a remarkable and funny man who was one of the leaders of our newsroom. He was our biggest champion, and his unending passion for journalism and for truth will be missed by his family at The Times, by his readers around the world, and by people who love journalism.</p> </blockquote> <p>Carr spent 25 years reporting on the media, but joined the Times in 2002, eventually writing the weekly “Media Equation” column which appeared on Mondays.</p> <p>He was born Sept. 8, 1956, in Minneapolis, and attended the Universtiy of Minnesota. He worked for the alternative weekly, Twin Cities Reader as well asThe Atlantic, Inside.com, New York magazine and was editor of Washington City Paper for five years. He had recently become a professor at Boston University, filling an endowed chair "dedicated to exploring creative business models to support journalism in the digital era."</p> <p>A former drug addict, Carr recounted his darkest moments and his recovery in the 2008 book "<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.nightofthegun.com/?wsref=3&num=582">The Night of the Gun"</a>. Famous for his wit, voice and passion for the craft, Carr rose to even greater fame and notoriety due to the documentary film "Page One," which followed a year at the Times and focused on Carr as he tracked the changing journalism industry. </p> <p>His death is the latest blow in a heart-wrenching week for the media industry, from the suspension of Brian Williams at NBC, to Jon Stewart stepping down from "The Daily Show," to the death of CBS News correspondent Bob Simon. </p> <p>Carr's last <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/12/business/media/brian-williamss-and-jon-stewarts-common-ground.html?rref=collection%2Fcolumn%2Fthe-media-equation">column </a>was about the common ground between Williams and Stewart, both men from New Jersey who were leaving their respective roles from very different positions. </p> <p>When Simon's death was announced on Wednesday night, Carr tweeted "RIP Bob Simon, a television storyteller without peer."</p> <p>Carr is survived by his wife Jill Rooney Carr, an event planner, and their daughter Maddie. He also has two twin daughters, Erin and Meagan.</p> <p>In the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.theglobeandmail.com//report-on-business/careers/careers-leadership/media-man-rose-from-second-chance-to-rock-star-from-times-newsroom/article22071737/?cmpid=rss1&click=sf_globe">syllabus </a>for his course at Boston University, Carr described himself:</p> <blockquote> <p>Your professor is a terrible singer and a decent dancer. He is a movie crier but stone-faced in real life. He never laughs even when he is actually amused. He hates suck-ups, people who treat waitresses and cab drivers poorly, and anybody who thinks diversity is just an academic conceit. He is a big sucker for the hard worker and is rarely dazzled by brilliance. He has little patience for people who pretend to ask questions when all they really want to do is make a speech.</p> </blockquote> <p><em>This post has been updated throughout. </em></p> <span id="page1"></span><span id="page2"></span> <div class="story-supplement"> <footer class="content-credits"> <h6>Authors:</h6> <div class="credits-list"> <dl class="vcard"> <dt class="credits-author"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com/reporters/HadasGold.html" class="url fn" rel="author">Hadas Gold</a></dt> <dd class="credits-twitter"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://twitter.com/hadas_gold" class="url"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-twitter"></b> @hadas_gold</a></dd> </dl> </div><!--/.credits-list--> </footer><!--/.credits--> </div><!--/.story-supplement--> </div><!--/.story-text--> </div><!--/.front-details--> </article><!--/.front-frag--> </li> <li> <article class="front-frag sticky-wrapper"> <div class="front-tools"> <aside class="user-tools orient-vertical sticky-content"> <ul class="share-tools tools-list" data-share-url="http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/02/ny-times-reports-million-q-profit-202051.html" data-share-loaded="true"> <li class="share-facebook"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/facebook/offer?pco=tbx32nj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/02/ny-times-reports-million-q-profit-202051.html&pubid=politico.com" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-facebook"></b><span class="icon-text count-facebook" style="opacity: 1;">Facebook</span></a></li> <li class="share-twitter"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/twitter/offer?pco=tbx32nj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/02/ny-times-reports-million-q-profit-202051.html&pubid=politico.com&text=" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-twitter"></b><span class="icon-text count-twitter" style="opacity: 1;">Twitter</span></a></li> <li class="share-linkedin"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/linkedin/offer?pco=tbxnj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/02/ny-times-reports-million-q-profit-202051.html&pubid=politico.com" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-linkedin"></b><span class="icon-text count-linkedin" style="opacity: 1;">LinkedIn</span></a></li> </ul><!--/.share-tools--> </aside><!--/.user-tools--> </div><!--/.front-tools--> <div class="front-details"> <div class="story-text is-compact"> <div class="story-intro format-s"> <div class="summary"> <header> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com//blogs/media/2015/02/ny-times-reports-million-q-profit-202051.html">N.Y. About 100 people accepted buyouts or were laid off in the last few months of 2014. The financial failure of the NYT Now and Opinion apps also contributed to the decrease.</p> <p>On the flip side, the Times saw digital advertising growth in all four quarters of 2014, a positive sign after declines in its core print advertising business.</p> <p>“2014 was an encouraging year with sufficient progress in digital advertising and subscription revenues to deliver modest overall revenue growth for the Company,” Mark Thompson, president and chief executive officer, said in a <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://investors.nytco.com/press/press-releases/press-release-details/2015/The-New-York-Times-Company-Reports-2014-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-Results/default.aspx">statement</a>.</p> <p>“We were particularly pleased with the strong growth in digital advertising, boosted by the introduction of Paid Posts, our native advertising solution, as well as rapid growth in ad sales associated with video and mobile," Thompson said. "We delivered digital ad growth for all four quarters, highlighted by double-digit strength in the second half of the year, including a 19 percent gain in the fourth quarter. As a result, despite continued secular headwinds on the print advertising side, total advertising revenue was within a percentage point of flat compared to 2013, the most encouraging year-over-year trend since 2005."</p> <p>The Times also finished 2014 with 910,000 digital subscribers, an increase of 150,000 from the previous year. As Capital New York’s <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://link.capitalnewyork.com/529cb43f2c67717d71caac7c54d118f31c148d257c8b4615/VNEY7cPo1o7mtrESAeabf">Ken Doctor pointed out,</a> 54 percent of all revenue at the Times now comes from readers and 30.5 percent of all advertising revenue now comes from digital.</p> <p>“The Times’ overall performance hasn’t really changed much in the past couple of years. But the numbers underlying that performance tells us how quickly, and how successfully, the Times is transitioning into the inevitably digital-first future,” Doctor wrote. </p> <span CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson detailed a litany of criticisms and complaints about the federal government’s treatment of journalists as she testified Thursday at Loretta Lynch’s Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing.</p> <p>Attkisson, who said the federal government has bullied and threatened journalists, recommended to Lynch that if confirmed she should “chart a new path and reject the damaging policies and practices that have been used by others in the past.”</p> <p>The “Stonewalled” author detailed her experiences reporting on Fast and Furious, saying the White House tried to “chill” her reporting by pressuring her superiors and using “surrogate bloggers to advance false claims.” Attkisson said the White House was panicked she was “doing her job well.”</p> <p>“One White House official got so mad, he angrily cussed me out,” Attkisson said.</p> <p>(<a expressed concern over and have protested the executive branch’s treatment of journalists, Attkisson noted.</p> <p>Attkisson also reiterated her claim that the federal government is monitoring her because of her reporting, including using keystroke monitoring, password capture and Skype to listen in on audio. Attkisson has sued the Justice Department for illegal wiretapping, seeking $35 million in damages. The Justice Department has said it has never, “to our knowledge,” compromised Attkisson’s “computers, or otherwise sought any information from or concerning any telephone, computer or other media device she may own or use.”</p> <p>An <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/SharylAttkissonIGreport.pdf">Inspector General report </a>from the Department of Justice submitted to the committee ahead of the hearing showed officials were not able to substantiate any of Attkisson's claims about surveillence.</p> <p>“The message has already been received: If you cross the administration with perfectly accurate reporting that they don’t like, you will be attacked and punished. You and your sources may be subjected to the kind of surveillance devised for enemies of the state,” Attkisson said. </p> <p>During questioning, Attkisson said the Freedom of Information Act is "extremely broken" at the federal level and is "used as a tool to obstruct and delay" the release of public informaton. She noted that she filed an FOIA request with the FBI more than 500 days ago for information about the government possibly monitoring her, but received a response only on Wednesday, the day before her testimony. </p> <p>Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said the hearing was turning into a "soundbite factory for Fox News and conspiracy theorists everywhere," and that the best way to act on dislike for Holder "would be to nominate Lynch as fast as possible." </p> <p><em>This post has been updated. </em></p> <p><em>Kendall Breitman contributed to this report. </em></p> <span id="page1"></span><span id="page2"></span> <div class="story-supplement"> <footer class="content-credits"> <h6>Authors:</h6> <div class="credits-list"> <dl class="vcard"> <dt class="credits-author"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com/reporters/HadasGold.html" class="url fn" rel="author">Hadas Gold</a></dt> <dd class="credits-twitter"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://twitter.com/hadas_gold" class="url"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-twitter"></b> @hadas_gold</a></dd> </dl> </div><!--/.credits-list--> </footer><!--/.credits--> </div><!--/.story-supplement--> <div class="story-supplement"> <aside class="content-categories"> <h6>This story tagged under:</h6> <ul class="categories-list"> <li><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://dyn.politico.com/tag/loretta-lynch">Loretta Lynch</a></li> </ul><!--/.categories-list--> </aside><!--/.content-categories--> </div><!--/.story-supplement--> </div><!--/.story-text--> </div><!--/.front-details--> </article><!--/.front-frag--> </li> <li> <article class="front-frag sticky-wrapper"> <div class="front-tools"> <aside class="user-tools orient-vertical sticky-content"> <ul class="share-tools tools-list" data-share-url="http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/gov-mike-pence-creating-a-staterun-news-agency-201636.html" data-share-loaded="true"> <li class="share-facebook"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/facebook/offer?pco=tbx32nj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/gov-mike-pence-creating-a-staterun-news-agency-201636.html&pubid=politico.com" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-facebook"></b><span class="icon-text count-facebook" style="opacity: 1;">Facebook</span></a></li> <li class="share-twitter"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/twitter/offer?pco=tbx32nj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/gov-mike-pence-creating-a-staterun-news-agency-201636.html&pubid=politico.com&text=" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-twitter"></b><span class="icon-text count-twitter" style="opacity: 1;">Twitter</span></a></li> <li class="share-linkedin"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/linkedin/offer?pco=tbxnj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/gov-mike-pence-creating-a-staterun-news-agency-201636.html&pubid=politico.com" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-linkedin"></b><span class="icon-text count-linkedin" style="opacity: 1;">LinkedIn</span></a></li> </ul><!--/.share-tools--> </aside><!--/.user-tools--> </div><!--/.front-tools--> <div class="front-details"> <div class="story-text is-compact"> <div class="story-intro format-s"> <div class="summary"> <header> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com//blogs/media/2015/01/gov-mike-pence-creating-a-staterun-news-agency-201636.html">Gov. Bumiller will report to Ryan, who will retain the Washington Bureau Chief title and take frequent trips to New York where most of the newspaper’s digital and production staff is located.</p> <p>Ryan outlined the new structure during a staff meeting in a bureau conference room on Tuesday, explaining that the intensity of the 2016 campaign had accelerated faster than expected, sources at the meeting said.</p> <p>Bill Hamilton – currently one of the two deputy bureau chiefs, along with Bumiller – will oversee political enterprise and spend increasing time in New York, according to a separate Times source. Hamilton currently heads the bureau’s national-security reporters, and Bumiller leads White House coverage.</p> <p>Ryan was named Washington bureau chief in November 2013, and kept her previous title as political editor, an unusual arrangement. Carl Hulse previously held the Washington editor title, which has been vacant since he was named chief Washington correspondent. Ryan, who pioneered The Times’ First Draft coverage online, will focus on ramping up the paper’s digital and mobile political offerings.</p> <p>The shift, sources said, is intended partly to avoid the perception that in the heat of a presidential campaign, non-political reporters in the bureau might feel neglected. Some sources suggested there was grumbling among some that Ryan wasn't giving due deference to national security reporting.</p> <p>A New York Times spokesperson declined to comment. </p> <span id="page1"></span><span id="page2"></span> <div class="story-supplement"> <footer class="content-credits"> <h6>Authors:</h6> <div class="credits-list"> <dl class="vcard"> <dt class="credits-author"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com/reporters/HadasGold.html" class="url fn" rel="author">Hadas Gold</a></dt> <dd class="credits-twitter"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://twitter.com/hadas_gold" class="url"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-twitter"></b> @hadas_gold</a></dd> </dl> </div><!--/.credits-list--> </footer><!--/.credits--> </div><!--/.story-supplement--> </div><!--/.story-text--> </div><!--/.front-details--> </article><!--/.front-frag--> </li> <li> <article class="front-frag sticky-wrapper"> <div class="front-tools"> <aside class="user-tools orient-vertical sticky-content"> <ul class="share-tools tools-list" data-share-url="http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/highlights-from-the-latest-charlie-hebdo-201075.html" data-share-loaded="true"> <li class="share-facebook"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/facebook/offer?pco=tbx32nj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/highlights-from-the-latest-charlie-hebdo-201075.html&pubid=politico.com" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-facebook"></b><span class="icon-text count-facebook" style="opacity: 1;">Facebook</span></a></li> <li class="share-twitter"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/twitter/offer?pco=tbx32nj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/highlights-from-the-latest-charlie-hebdo-201075.html&pubid=politico.com&text=" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-twitter"></b><span class="icon-text count-twitter" style="opacity: 1;">Twitter</span></a></li> <li class="share-linkedin"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/linkedin/offer?pco=tbxnj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/highlights-from-the-latest-charlie-hebdo-201075.html&pubid=politico.com" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-linkedin"></b><span class="icon-text count-linkedin" style="opacity: 1;">LinkedIn</span></a></li> </ul><!--/.share-tools--> </aside><!--/.user-tools--> </div><!--/.front-tools--> <div class="front-details"> <div class="story-text is-compact"> <div class="story-intro format-s"> <div class="summary"> <header> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com//blogs/media/2015/01/highlights-from-the-latest-charlie-hebdo-201075.html">Highlights from the latest Charlie Hebdo</a></h1> </header> <footer class="meta"> <p class="byline">By <span class="vcard"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com/reporters/AdamBLerner.html" rel="nofollow" class="url fn">ADAM B. Now, copies are selling like hotcakes around France, and many vendors have had to put up signs that say “Plus de Charlie” (No more Charlie).</p> <p>As expected, the latest issue was bold and provocative, a visible demonstration of the magazine’s refusal to self-censor. Here are a few highlights:</p> <p><strong>1. </strong>In one cartoon, three radical Islamists sit side by side. The man on the left says, “We must not touch those Charlie Hebdo guys.” The man on the right says, “If not, they’ll pass for martyrs and, once in paradise, those bastards will screw our virgins.”</p> <p><strong>2. </strong>In his editorial titled “Will there be any more of the ‘Yes, buts?” Charlie’s editor-in-chief, Gerard Biard, begins, “For the last week, Charlie, an atheist journal, has completed more miracles than all of the saints and prophets combined.” Later, he writes “Regardless, we’re going to try to be optimists, even though this isn’t the season. We’re going to hope that from January 7, 2015 onwards the firm defense of secularism will be self-evident across the world, that we’ll finally stop, through posturing, through electoral calculations or through cowardice, legitimizing or even tolerating the communitarianism and the cultural relativism that paves the way for only one thing: religious totalitarianism.”</p> <p><strong>3. </strong>Biard also had harsh words for Pope Francis in his editorial. The Notre Dame cathedral in the heart of Paris rang its bells on Jan. 8 in honor of the victims of the Charlie Hebdo attack. “We want to send a message to Pope Francis, who also ‘is Charlie’ this week: We won’t accept that the bells of Notre-Dame sound in our honor unless they are rung by Femen.” (Note: Femen is a group of feminist activists known for demonstrating in the nude with provocative paintings on their bodies.)</p> <p><strong>4. </strong>A cartoon depicts the pope preparing to give communion to a line of women with their mouths open, awaiting the body of Christ. The headline says “Divorcees will be able to receive communion,” while the pope’s thought bubble says, “My God, pardon these penis-eaters.”</p> <p><strong>5. </strong>In a cartoon depicting a study-abroad office (called Erasmus, Europe’s largest study-abroad program), a student in a black hoodie carries a duffel bag with guns and other weapons. He says, “Nothing in Syria? I’ll just hijack a plane.” </p> <p><strong>6. </strong>In a piece under the banner “The Muslim World” with the headline, “The Attack Seen From the Outside,” Solène Chalvon refers to “a geostrategic competition that hasn’t stopped of ISIS’ tweets saluting the attack (so long as they can’t claim them for themselves).” A cartoon below features two members of Boko Haram outside a burning village. One member says to the other, “Two thousand followers that Charlie won’t have,” below a headline that reads “Nigeria, Boko Haram Massacre 16 villages.”</p> <p><strong>7. </strong>In a series of cartoons called “The First Assessment of the Days After: The Pluses and Minuses,” the authors depict Madonna under pluses and German Chancellor Angela Merkel under minuses. “Madonna supports ‘Charlie,’” says the headline, while Madonna adds, “and I’m throwing them my tiny underwear.” In the adjacent image the headline reads “Angela Merkel as well” while the German leader adds, “I’m not wearing underwear.”</p> <p><strong>8.</strong> In a column, Solène Chalvon tears into Financial Times editorialist Tony Barber, who <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/the-massacre-at-charlie-hebdo-200701.html">wrote</a> in the Financial Times, “France is the land of Voltaire, but too often editorial foolishness has prevailed at Charlie Hebdo." Chalvon suggests that this sort of criticism falls into line with members of ISIS and other radicals online that claim that Charlie Hebdo deserved its fate, employing a French phrase to demonstrate the fallacy: “Whoever cooks the poison will eat it himself.”</p> <p><strong>9. </strong>A multi-scene cartoon features a group of hostage takers discussing French President Francois Hollande’s decision to end the country’s practice of paying ransoms to terrorists who have kidnapped French hostages. The terrorists wonder what to do with their hostages, when one has the idea to sell them in a sort of yard sale. One local woman says she’ll take one “to teach my children to speak French.” Another says “I’ll take one to teach me to give blowjobs.”</p> <p><strong>10. </strong>Four religious leaders (one Catholic, one Protestant, one Muslim, and one Jew) stand side by side, each wearing a placard that says “Je suis Charlie.” The headline says “New Friends.”</p> <span id="page1"></span><span id="page2"></span> <div class="story-supplement"> <footer class="content-credits"> <h6>Authors:</h6> <div class="credits-list"> <dl class="vcard"> <dt class="credits-author"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com/reporters/AdamBLerner.html" class="url fn" rel="author">Adam B. Some sections, such as the media desk, all but disappeared.</p> <p>"We will fix the things the buyouts broke. We will look internally to fill important jobs. We will carefully and judiciously make a few outside hires. I know it seems incongruous to hire after reducing the staff. But if we stop bringing in new talent we run the risk of missing a generation of future stars," Baquet <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.nytco.com/a-note-from-dean-charting-the-future/">wrote</a>.</p> <p>The media desk will be rebuilt and "a powerhouse political team" is another goal of the coming year, he added.</p> <p>Baquet also admitted that while the NYT Cooking app has been successful, the NYT Now app was "not a financial breakthrough" and that they would be "taking the best features of NYT Now and blending them into the core app."</p> <p>And though the paper will be taking steps to avoid the type of staff cuts it experienced in 2014, Baquet said he can't guarantee they wouldn't happen again.</p> <p>"I understand that this is a moment filled with a certain amount of worry. But there is also enormous opportunity. Just remember, we have nearly two million paying readers, a thriving print newspaper, and a rapidly growing digital business that brings in many times more revenue than most of our flashy new competitors. We remain a highly profitable institution," he wrote. </p> <p>Read the full memo <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.nytco.com/a-note-from-dean-charting-the-future/">here</a>. </p> <span id="page1"></span><span id="page2"></span> <div class="story-supplement"> <footer class="content-credits"> <h6>Authors:</h6> <div class="credits-list"> <dl class="vcard"> <dt class="credits-author"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com/reporters/HadasGold.html" class="url fn" rel="author">Hadas Gold</a></dt> <dd class="credits-twitter"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://twitter.com/hadas_gold" class="url"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-twitter"></b> @hadas_gold</a></dd> </dl> </div><!--/.credits-list--> </footer><!--/.credits--> </div><!--/.story-supplement--> </div><!--/.story-text--> </div><!--/.front-details--> </article><!--/.front-frag--> </li> <li> <article class="front-frag sticky-wrapper"> <div class="front-tools"> <aside class="user-tools orient-vertical sticky-content"> <ul class="share-tools tools-list" data-share-url="http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/james-pindell-joins-boston-globe-200500.html" data-share-loaded="true"> <li class="share-facebook"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/facebook/offer?pco=tbx32nj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/james-pindell-joins-boston-globe-200500.html&pubid=politico.com" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-facebook"></b><span class="icon-text count-facebook" style="opacity: 1;">Facebook</span></a></li> <li class="share-twitter"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/twitter/offer?pco=tbx32nj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/james-pindell-joins-boston-globe-200500.html&pubid=politico.com&text=" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-twitter"></b><span class="icon-text count-twitter" style="opacity: 1;">Twitter</span></a></li> <li class="share-linkedin"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://api.addthis.com/oexchange/0.8/forward/linkedin/offer?pco=tbxnj-1.0&url=http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/james-pindell-joins-boston-globe-200500.html&pubid=politico.com" target="_blank"><b aria-hidden="true" class="icon icon-linkedin"></b><span class="icon-text count-linkedin" style="opacity: 1;">LinkedIn</span></a></li> </ul><!--/.share-tools--> </aside><!--/.user-tools--> </div><!--/.front-tools--> <div class="front-details"> <div class="story-text is-compact"> <div class="story-intro format-s"> <div class="summary"> <header> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com//blogs/media/2015/01/james-pindell-joins-boston-globe-200500.html">James Pindell joins Boston Globe</a></h1> </header> <footer class="meta"> <p class="byline">By <span class="vcard"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630110812/http://www.politico.com/reporters/HadasGold.html" rel="nofollow" class="url fn">HADAS GOLD</a></span></p> <p class="timestamp"><time datetime="2015-01-01">1/1/15 1:36 PM EDT</time></p> </footer><!--/.meta--> </div><!--/.summary--> </div> <p>James Pindell is joining The Boston Globe as a political reporter focusing on the 2016 primaries, the newspaper announced Thursday.</p> <p>Pindell, who had been with WMUR-TV as its political director, will retain a relationship with the television station as an on-air political analyst.</p> <p>"I'm thrilled to announce that James Pindell, the premiere authority on the New Hampshire presidential primary, will be joining the Globe as a digital-first political reporter and playing a key role in our effort to augment our coverage of the first-in-the-nation contest," Senior Deputy Managing Editor Jennifer Peter said in a memo. "To hear James tell it, while other kids in his Indiana hometown were playing in sandboxes, he was glued to the TV, watching coverage of the presidential elections. He was so smitten that he wound up going to college in Des Moines to be closer to the caucuses. James is now embarking on his fifth presidential primary cycle as a reporter and has been dubbed by The Washington Post as the 'Insider’s Insider' for his coverage of politics in the Granite State."</p> <p>During the 2014 midterm election, Pindell became the news when he engaged in a back-and-forth over the location of a New Hampshire county with Scott Brown while moderating a debate between Brown and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen on Oct. 30.
