And he was in the house<MH1004> of his master<MH113>, the Egyptian<MH4713>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Now his master<MH113> saw<MH7200> that the LORD<MH3068> was with him and <i>that</i> the LORD<MH3068> made all<MH3605> that he did<MH6213a> prosper<MH6743b> in his hand<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So Joseph<MH3130> found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in his sight<MH5869> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>became<MH8334> his personal<MH8334> servant<MH8334>; and he made<MH6485> him overseer<MH6485> over<MH5921> his house<MH1004>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>put<MH5414> him in charge<MH3027> of all<MH3605> that he owned<MH3426>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>It came<MH1961> about<MH1961> that from the time<MH227> he made<MH6485> him overseer<MH6485> in his house<MH1004> and over<MH5921> all<MH3605> that he owned<MH3426>, the LORD<MH3068> blessed<MH1288> the Egyptian’s<MH4713> house<MH1004> on account<MH1558> of Joseph<MH3130>; so the LORD’S<MH3068> blessing<MH1293> was upon all<MH3605> that he owned<MH3426>, in the house<MH1004> and in the field<MH7704>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So he left<MH5800a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Joseph<MH3130> in charge<MH3027> of everything<MH3605> that he owned; and with him <i>there</i> he did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>concern<MH3045> himself with anything<MH3972> except<MH3588, 518> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>food<MH3899> which<MH834> he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>ate<MH398>. <p class="paragraph"> Now Joseph<MH3130> was handsome<MH3303> in form<MH8389> and appearance<MH4758>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> after<MH310> these<MH428> events<MH1697> that his master’s<MH113> wife<MH802> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>had<MH5375> her eyes<MH5869> on Joseph<MH3130>, and she said<MH559>, “Sleep<MH7901> with me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But he refused<MH3985> and said<MH559> to his master’s<MH113> wife<MH802>, “Look<MH2005>, with me <i>here,</i> my master<MH113> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>does not concern<MH3045> himself with anything<MH4100> in the house<MH1004>, and he has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>put<MH5414> me in charge<MH3027> of all<MH3605> that he owns<MH3426>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>There<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> one greater<MH1419> in this<MH2088> house<MH1004> than<MH4480> I, and he has withheld<MH2820> nothing<MH3808, 3972> from me except<MH3588, 518> you, because<MH834> you are his wife<MH802>. How<MH349> then could I do<MH6213a> this<MH2088> great<MH1419> evil<MH7463a>, and sin<MH2398> against God<MH430>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Though she spoke<MH1696> to Joseph<MH3130> day<MH3117> after day<MH3117>, he did not listen<MH8085> to her to lie<MH7901> beside<MH681a> her <i>or</i> be with her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now it happened<MH1961> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>one<MH2088> day<MH3117> that he went<MH935> into the house<MH1004> to do<MH6213a> his work<MH4399>, and none<MH369, 376> of the people<MH376> of the household<MH1004> was there<MH8033> inside<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So she grabbed<MH8610> him by his garment<MH899b>, saying<MH559>, “Sleep<MH7901> with me!” But he left<MH5800a> his garment<MH899b> in her hand<MH3027> and fled<MH5127>, and went<MH3318> outside<MH2351>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>When she saw<MH7200> that he had left<MH5800a> his garment<MH899b> in her hand<MH3027> and had fled<MH5127> outside<MH2351>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>she called<MH7121> to the men<MH376> of her household<MH1004> and said<MH559> to them, “See<MH7200>, he has brought<MH935> in<MH935> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>Hebrew<MH5680> to us to make<MH6711> fun<MH6711> of us; he came<MH935> in<MH935> to me to sleep<MH7901> with me, and I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>screamed<MH7121, 6963, 1419>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>When he heard<MH8085> that I raised<MH7311> my voice<MH6963> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>screamed<MH7121>, he left<MH5800a> his garment<MH899b> beside<MH681a> me and fled<MH5127> and went<MH3318> outside<MH2351>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So she <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>left<MH5117> his garment<MH899b> beside<MH681a> her until<MH5704> his master<MH113> came<MH935> home<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then she spoke<MH1696> to him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>with these<MH428> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>words<MH1697>: “The Hebrew<MH5680> slave<MH5650>, whom<MH834> you brought<MH935> to us, came<MH935> in<MH935> to me to make<MH6711> fun<MH6711> of me; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>but when I raised<MH7311> my voice<MH6963> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>screamed<MH7121>, he left<MH5800a> his garment<MH899b> beside<MH681a> me and fled<MH5127> outside<MH2351>.” <p class="hdg">Joseph Imprisoned</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now when his master<MH113> heard<MH8085> the words<MH1697> of his wife<MH802> which<MH834> she spoke<MH1696> to him, saying<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>This<MH1697, 428> is what<MH1697> your slave<MH5650> did<MH6213a> to me,” his anger<MH639> burned<MH2734>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So Joseph’s<MH3130> master<MH113> took<MH3947> him and put<MH5414> him into the prison<MH1004, 5470>, the place<MH4725> where<MH834> the king’s<MH4428> prisoners<MH615> were confined<MH631>; and he was there<MH8033> in the prison<MH1004, 5470>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But the LORD<MH3068> was with Joseph<MH3130> and extended<MH5186> kindness<MH2617a> to him, and gave<MH5414> him favor<MH2580> in the sight<MH5869> of the warden<MH8269> of the prison<MH1004, 5470>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And the warden<MH8269> of the prison<MH1004, 5470> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>put<MH5414> Joseph<MH3130> in charge<MH3027> of all<MH3605> the prisoners<MH615> who<MH834> were in the prison<MH1004, 5470>; so that whatever<MH3605, 834> was done<MH6213a> there<MH8033>, he was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>responsible<MH6213a> <i>for it.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/39-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>The warden<MH8269> of the prison<MH1004, 5470> did not supervise<MH7200> anything<MH3605, 3972> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>under Joseph’s authority<MH3027>, because<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> was with him;
