Whether you’re a designer working on a new project or someone looking to enhance your storytelling, unDraw provides a great way to jumpstart illustration.</p><h2 id="71cb" class="oi oj gu bf ok ol om dy on oo op ea oq nt or os ot nx ou ov ow ob ox oy oz pa bk">Ethical Considerations in Design</h2><p id="d293" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs pb no np hv pc nr ns nt pd nv nw nx pe nz oa ob pf od oe of gn bk">It’s crucial to emphasize the importance of ethical design practices. Always ensure that any reference material you use is either open-source or properly licensed. Respecting intellectual property is non-negotiable; it’s about creating with integrity.</p><h1 id="64be" class="pg oj gu bf ok ph pi hu on pj pk hx oq pl pm pn po pp pq pr ps pt pu pv pw px bk">Workflow #1: Using Conventional Vector Editing Tools with unDraw</h1><p id="624b" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs pb no np hv pc nr ns nt pd nv nw nx pe nz oa ob pf od oe of gn bk">Before we dive into the AI-driven approach, it’s worth noting that you don’t necessarily need to use AI to achieve impressive results with unDraw. Vector editing tools like Figma or Adobe Illustrator are quite powerful with unDraw when it comes to manipulating colors, rearranging scenes, and customizing elements within the illustrations.</p><p id="34a2" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs nn no np hv nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of gn bk">With unDraw, you can quickly change the colors and sizes of components without sacrificing quality. You can even mix and match various illustrations to create whole new scenes. For many projects, this approach alone can be more than sufficient to create the exact visuals you need. But if you want to explore whole new compositions, Midjourney is my go-to for creating customized illustrations.</p><p id="62f3" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs nn no np hv nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of gn bk">In the example below, I’ve <strong class="nm gv">curated images</strong> for the theme of “responsive web design” straight from unDraw.</p><figure class="mv custom content as needed.</p><h1 id="30ab" class="pg oj gu bf ok ph pi hu on pj pk hx oq pl pm pn po pp pq pr ps pt pu pv pw px bk">Workflow #2: Using Midjourney to create new concepts and images based on unDraw content:</h1><p id="36f0" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs pb no np hv pc nr ns nt pd nv nw nx pe nz oa ob pf od oe of gn bk">UnDraw has a wide variety of certain types of content, particularly lifestyle and technology themes. But for other themes (for example, healthcare themes), the choices can be limited. Here’s where Midjourney can help expand your options for illustration, with no need for any specialized design skills:</p><p id="11dc" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs nn no np hv nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of gn bk">Step 1. <br/>Upload the curated sample sheet you gathered to Midjourney and copy the URL</p><p id="c559" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs nn no np hv nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of gn bk">Step 2: <br/>Use the <strong class="nm gv">/Describe </strong>command in Midjourney to help generate a sample of the prompt structure from the URL, here’s one that seemed good and conversational:</p><p id="810a" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs nn no np hv nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of gn bk"><strong class="nm gv"><em class="oh">A set of flat illustrations showing people using mobile devices, computers, and office equipment to create digital content such as website designs, marketing materials, or video content. The images should include various characters engaging in different activities like typing on an iPhone screen, interacting with AI voice assistants, adding colors to web design mockups, and creating graphics for social media posts on computer screens. The background should be white.</em></strong></p><p id="cec2" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs nn no np hv nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of gn bk">Step 3 (optional): <br/>Use the <strong class="nm gv">/Shorten </strong>Command to compress the prompt to add more details if needed.</p><p id="a887" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs nn no np hv nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of gn bk">Step 4:<br/>Upload a brand pallette for your data visualization, to help Midjourney understand your color hierarchy and use this as your style reference (SREF).</p><p id="9314" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs nn no np hv nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of gn bk">Step 5:<br/>Modify your draft prompt to customize the content you want to generate. In this case, I will change the subject matter from web technology to healthcare topics. You can also experiment with a — chaos tag, for more of a creative exploration. Default chaos is 0, maxium is 100. Maximum chaos is great when you really want to experiment and break out of convention.</p><p id="4da1" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b hs nn no np hv nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of gn bk">Remember, it’s best not to overload a single prompt with too many keywords–for best results, use only a few phrases per prompt, and change them. Avoid re-running the same prompt repeatedly.
