The concept of sainthood is rooted in the biblical understanding of holiness and the calling of God's people to live distinct, consecrated lives.

Old Testament Context

The Hebrew word often translated as "saints" is "qadosh," meaning "holy" or "set apart." In the Old Testament, this term is frequently used to describe the people of Israel, who were chosen by God to be a holy nation. For example, in Deuteronomy 7:6 , it is written, "For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession, above all peoples on the face of the earth."

New Testament Understanding

In the New Testament, the Greek word "hagios" is used to denote saints. This term is applied to all believers in Christ, emphasizing their status as those who are sanctified and called to live in holiness. The Apostle Paul frequently addresses his letters to the "saints" in various cities, indicating that all Christians are considered saints by virtue of their faith. For instance, in Ephesians 1:1 , Paul writes, "Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus."

Characteristics of Saints

Saints are characterized by their faith in Jesus Christ and their commitment to living according to God's will. They are called to be holy, as God is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16: "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"). This holiness is not achieved through human effort but is a result of the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in the believer's life.

Role and Function

The role of saints is multifaceted. They are called to be witnesses of Christ's love and truth in the world, to serve one another in love, and to build up the body of Christ, the Church. Ephesians 4:12 speaks of the purpose of the saints: "to equip the saints for works of ministry, to build up the body of Christ."

Communion of Saints

The concept of the "communion of saints" refers to the spiritual solidarity among all believers, both living and deceased, who are united in Christ. This communion is a reflection of the unity of the body of Christ and is celebrated in the fellowship of the Church.

Eternal Destiny

The ultimate destiny of the saints is to inherit eternal life and to dwell in the presence of God forever. Revelation 14:12-13 highlights the perseverance and reward of the saints: "Here is a call for the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. And I heard a voice from heaven telling me to write, 'Blessed are the dead—those who die in the Lord from this moment on.' 'Yes,' says the Spirit, 'they will rest from their labors, for their deeds will follow them.'"

In summary, saints are those who are sanctified by faith in Christ, called to live holy lives, and destined for eternal communion with God. They play a vital role in the mission and ministry of the Church, serving as witnesses to the transformative power of the Gospel.
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
SAINTS
sants: In the King James Version 3 words are thus rendered:

(1) qadhosh (in Daniel the same root occurs several times in its Aramaic form, qaddish);

(2) chacidh, and

(3) hagioi.

Of these words (2) has in general the meaning of righteousness or goodness, while (1) and (3) have the meaning of consecration and divine claim and ownership. They are not primarily words of character, like chacidh, but express a relation to God as being set apart for His own. Wherever qadhosh refers to angels, the rendering "holy one" or "holy ones" has been substituted in the Revised Version (British and American) for the King James Version "saint" or "saints," which is the case also in Psalm 106:16 margin (compare 34:9), and in 1 Samuel 2:9, as the translation of chacidh.

While hagioi occurs more frequently in the New Testament than does qadhosh in the Old Testament, yet both are applied with practical uniformity to the company of God's people rather than to any individual. Perhaps the rendering "saints" cannot be improved, but it is necessary for the ordinary reader constantly to guard against the idea that New Testament saintship was in any way a result of personal character, and consequently that it implied approval of moral attainment already made. Such a rendering as "consecrate ones," for example, would bring out more clearly the relation to God which is involved, but, besides the fact that it is not a happy translation, it might lead to other errors, for it is not easy to remember that consecration-the setting apart of the individual as one of the company whom God has in a peculiar way as His own-springs not from man, but from God Himself, and that consequently it is in no way something optional, and admits of no degrees of progress, but, on the contrary, is from the beginning absolute duty. It should also be noted that while, as has been said, to be a saint is not directly and primarily to be good but to be set apart by God as His own, yet the godly and holy character ought inevitably and immediately to result. When God consecrates and claims moral beings for Himself and His service, He demands that they should go on to be fit for and worthy of the relation in which He has placed them, and so we read of certain actions as performed "worthily of the saints" (Romans 16:2) and as such "as becometh saints" (Ephesians 5:3). The thought of the holy character of the "saints," which is now so common as almost completely to obscure the real thought of the New Testament writers, already lay in their thinking very close to their conception of saintship as consecration by God to be His own.

David Foster Estes

Greek
40. hagios -- sacred, holy
... holy NASB Word Usage Holy (92), holy (62), Holy of Holies (1), holy one (5), holy
ones (1), holy place (7), most holy (1), saint (1), saints (59), saints' (1 ...
//strongsnumbers.com/greek2/40.htm - 8k
1062. gamos -- a wedding
... 1062 -- properly, a wedding celebration; (figuratively) the Marriage Supper of the
Lamb which begins with Christ glorifying all the saints (OT, NT) at His ...
//strongsnumbers.com/greek2/1062.htm - 7k
1577. ekklesia -- an assembly, a (religious) congregation
... out, ie (concretely) a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish
synagogue, or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven ...
//strongsnumbers.com/greek2/1577.htm - 8k
4875. sunanapauomai -- to lie down to rest with, fig. to be ...
... to the Roman Christians coming alongside Paul to "struggle together" against those
opposing his important mission to help the suffering saints in Jerusalem. ...
//strongsnumbers.com/greek2/4875.htm - 7k
27. agapetos -- beloved
... common salvation, I had [a sense of] necessity to write to you, exhorting [you]
to constantly, appropriately contend for the-once-delivered-for the saints-faith ...
//strongsnumbers.com/greek2/27.htm - 8k
5147. tribos -- a beaten track, a path
... can best know Him.
