Behold<MH2009>, Ahijah<MH281> the prophet<MH5030> is there<MH8033>, who<MH1931> said<MH1696> regarding<MH5921> me <i>that I would be</i> king<MH4428> over<MH5921> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Take<MH3947> ten<MH6235> loaves<MH3899> with you, <i>some</i> pastries<MH5350>, and a jar<MH1228> of honey<MH1706>, and go<MH935> to him. He will tell<MH5046> you what<MH4100> will happen<MH1961> to the boy<MH5288>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And Jeroboam’s<MH3379> wife<MH802> did<MH6213a> so<MH3651>, and set<MH6965> out<MH6965> and went<MH1980> to Shiloh<MH7887>, and came<MH935> to the house<MH1004> of Ahijah<MH281>. Now Ahijah<MH281> could<MH3201> not see<MH7200> because<MH3588> his eyes<MH5869> were<MH6965> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>glossy<MH6965> from his old<MH7869> age<MH7869>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Now the LORD<MH3068> had said<MH559> to Ahijah<MH281>, “Behold<MH2009>, the wife<MH802> of Jeroboam<MH3379> is coming<MH935> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>inquire<MH1875> of you about<MH413> her son<MH1121>, because<MH3588> he is<MH2470a> sick<MH2470a>. You shall say<MH1696> such<MH2090> and such<MH2088> to her, for it will be when she arrives<MH935>, that she is going to make<MH5235a> herself unrecognizable<MH5235a>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So when Ahijah<MH281> heard<MH8085> the sound<MH6963> of her feet<MH7272> coming<MH935> in the doorway<MH6607>, he said<MH559>, “Come<MH935> in<MH935>, wife<MH802> of Jeroboam<MH3379>; why<MH4100> do you make<MH5235a> yourself unrecognizable<MH5235a>? Nevertheless, I am sent<MH7971> to you <i>with</i> a harsh<MH7186> <i>message.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Go<MH1980>, say<MH559> to Jeroboam<MH3379>, ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: “Because<MH3282, 834> I exalted<MH7311> you from among<MH8432> the people<MH5971a> and made<MH5414> you leader<MH5057> over<MH5921> My people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>and tore<MH7167> the kingdom<MH4467> away<MH7167> from the house<MH1004> of David<MH1732> and gave<MH5414> it to you—yet you have not been<MH1961> like My servant<MH5650> David<MH1732>, who<MH834> kept<MH8104> My commandments<MH4687> and followed<MH1980, 310> Me with all<MH3605> his heart<MH3824>, to do<MH6213a> only<MH7534b> that which<MH3477> was right<MH3477> in My sight<MH5869>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>you also have done<MH6213a> more<MH4480> evil<MH7489a> than<MH4480> all<MH3605> who<MH834> were before<MH6440> you, and you have gone<MH1980> and made<MH6213a> for yourself other<MH312> gods<MH430> and cast<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a> images<MH4541a> to provoke<MH3707> Me to<MH3707> anger<MH3707>, and have thrown<MH7993> Me behind<MH310> your back<MH1458>— <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>therefore<MH3651> behold<MH2009>, I am bringing<MH935> disaster<MH7463a> on the house<MH1004> of Jeroboam<MH3379>, and I will eliminate<MH3772> from Jeroboam<MH3379> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>every<MH8366> male<MH8366, 7023> person, both <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>bond<MH6113> and free<MH5800a> in Israel<MH3478>, and I will make<MH1197a> a clean<MH310> sweep<MH1197a> of the house<MH1004> of Jeroboam<MH3379>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> one sweeps<MH1197a> away<MH1197a> dung<MH1557> until<MH5704> it is<MH8552> all<MH8552> gone<MH8552>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Anyone belonging to Jeroboam<MH3379> who dies<MH4191> in the city<MH5892b>, the dogs<MH3611> will eat<MH398>. And anyone who dies<MH4191> in the field<MH7704>, the birds<MH5775> of the sky<MH8064> will eat<MH398>; for the LORD<MH3068> has spoken<MH1696> <i>it.</i>”’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now you, arise<MH6965>, go<MH1980> to your house<MH1004>. When your feet<MH7272> enter<MH935> the city<MH5892b> the child<MH3206> will die<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> will mourn<MH5594> for him and bury<MH6912> him, for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>he alone<MH905> of Jeroboam’s<MH3379> <i>family</i> will come<MH935> to the grave<MH6913>, because<MH3282> in him something<MH1697> good<MH2896a> was found<MH4672> toward<MH413> the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> in the house<MH1004> of Jeroboam<MH3379>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Moreover, the LORD<MH3068> will raise<MH6965> up<MH6965> for Himself a king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478> who<MH834> will eliminate<MH3772> the house<MH1004> of Jeroboam<MH3379> this<MH2088> day<MH3117> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>and from now<MH6258> on. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“For the LORD<MH3068> will strike<MH5221> Israel<MH3478>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> a reed<MH7070> sways<MH5110> in the water<MH4325>; and He will uproot<MH5428> Israel<MH3478> from this<MH2088> good<MH2896a> land<MH127> which<MH834> He gave<MH5414> to their fathers<MH1>, and will scatter<MH2219> them beyond<MH4480, 5676> the <i>Euphrates</i> River<MH5104>, because<MH3282, 834> they have made<MH6213a> their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Asherim<MH842>, provoking<MH3707> the LORD<MH3068> to<MH3707> anger<MH3707>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>He will give<MH5414> up<MH5414> Israel<MH3478> because<MH1558> of the sins<MH2403b> of Jeroboam<MH3379>, which<MH834> he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>committed<MH2398> and with which<MH834> he misled<MH2398> Israel<MH3478> into<MH2398> sin<MH2398>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then Jeroboam’s<MH3379> wife<MH802> arose<MH6965> and departed<MH1980>, and came<MH935> to Tirzah<MH8656>. As she was entering<MH935> the threshold<MH5592b> of the house<MH1004>, the child<MH5288> died<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> buried<MH6912> him and mourned<MH5594> for him, in accordance with the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> which<MH834> He had spoken<MH1696> through<MH3027> His servant<MH5650> Ahijah<MH281> the prophet<MH5030>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now <i>as for</i> the rest<MH3499a> of the acts<MH1697> of Jeroboam<MH3379>, how<MH834> he made<MH3898a> war<MH3898a> and how<MH834> he reigned<MH4427a>, behold<MH2009>, they are written<MH3789> in the Book<MH5612> of the Chronicles<MH1697, 3117> of the Kings<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And the time<MH3117> that Jeroboam<MH3379> reigned<MH4427a> <i>was</i> twenty-two<MH6242, 8147> years<MH8141>; and he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> with his fathers<MH1>, and his son<MH1121> Nadab<MH5070> reigned<MH4427a> in<MH8478> his place<MH8478>. <p class="hdg">Rehoboam Misleads Judah</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Now Rehoboam<MH7346> the son<MH1121> of Solomon<MH8010> reigned<MH4427a> in Judah<MH3063>. Rehoboam<MH7346> was forty-one<MH705, 259> years<MH8141> old<MH1121> when he became<MH4427a> king<MH4427a>, and he reigned<MH4427a> for seventeen<MH7651, 6240> years<MH8141> in Jerusalem<MH3389>, the city<MH5892b> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had chosen<MH977> from all<MH3605> the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478> to put<MH7760> His name<MH8034> there<MH8033>. And his mother’s<MH517> name<MH8034> was Naamah<MH5279a> the Ammonitess<MH5985>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And <i>the people of</i> Judah<MH3063> did<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a> in the sight<MH5869> of the LORD<MH3068>, and they provoked<MH7065> Him to<MH7065> jealousy<MH7065> with their sins<MH2403b> which<MH834> they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>committed<MH2398>, more<MH4480> than<MH4480> all<MH3605> that their fathers<MH1> had done<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>For they, too<MH1571>, built<MH1129> for themselves high<MH1116> places<MH1116>, memorial<MH4676> stones<MH4676>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Asherim<MH842> on every<MH3605> high<MH1364> hill<MH1389> and under<MH8478> every<MH3605> luxuriant<MH7488> tree<MH6086>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>There were also<MH1571> male<MH6945> cult<MH6945> prostitutes<MH6945> in the land<MH776>. They committed<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>all<MH3605> the same abominations<MH8441> of the nations<MH1471> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> dispossessed<MH3423> before<MH6440> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now it happened<MH1961> in the fifth<MH2549> year<MH8141> of King<MH4428> Rehoboam<MH7346>, that Shishak<MH7895> the king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714> marched<MH5927> against<MH5921> Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And he took<MH3947> away the treasures<MH214> of the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> and the treasures<MH214> of the king’s<MH4428> house<MH1004>, and he took<MH3947> everything<MH3605>; he even took<MH3947> all<MH3605> the shields<MH4043> of gold<MH2091> which<MH834> Solomon<MH8010> had made<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>So King<MH4428> Rehoboam<MH7346> made<MH6213a> shields<MH4043> of bronze<MH5178> in<MH8478> their place<MH8478>, and entrusted<MH6485> them to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>care<MH3027> of the commanders<MH8269> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>guard<MH7323> who guarded<MH8104> the doorway<MH6607> of the king’s<MH4428> house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And it happened<MH1961> as often<MH1767> as the king<MH4428> entered<MH935> the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, that the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>guards<MH7323> would carry<MH5375> them and would bring<MH7725> them back<MH7725> into the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>guards’<MH7323> room<MH8372>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Now <i>as for</i> the rest<MH3499a> of the acts<MH1697> of Rehoboam<MH7346> and all<MH3605> that he did<MH6213a>, are they not written<MH3789> in the Book<MH5612> of the Chronicles<MH1697, 3117> of the Kings<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And there was war<MH4421> between<MH996> Rehoboam<MH7346> and Jeroboam<MH3379> continually<MH3605, 3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/14-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And Rehoboam<MH7346> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> with his fathers<MH1> and was buried<MH6912> with his fathers<MH1> in the city<MH5892b> of David<MH1732>; and his mother’s<MH517> name<MH8034> was Naamah<MH5279a> the Ammonitess<MH5985>.
