Although researchers were excited with the vast amounts of MOOC data being collected, the benefits of this data did not stand to the expectations due to several challenges. The analyses of MOOC data are very time-consuming and labor-intensive, and require a highly advanced set of technical skills, often not available to the education researchers. Because of this MOOC data analyses are rarely done before the courses end, limiting the potential of data to impact the student learning outcomes and experience. In this paper we introduce MOOCito (MOOC intervention tool), a user-friendly software platform for the analysis of MOOC data, that focuses on conducting data-informed instructional interventions and course experimentations. We cover important design principles behind MOOCito and provide an overview of the trends in MOOC research leading to its development. Although a work-in-progress, in this paper, we outline the prototype of MOOCito and the results of a user evaluation study that focused on system’s perceived usability and ease-of-use. Since 2012 up to day, there are many MOOCs introduced in many platforms. Some of the platforms are namely Coursera, edX, NovoEd, FutureLearn, Open2Study. For an instance Coursera has more than 700 courses in their platform. Although there is increase demand for online courses, very less percentage of participants complete the courses. Some researchers claim this is due to lack of self discipline, yet it is still sceptic on the reasons for higher dropout rates. However, examining reviews of the courses by participants and experiencing by ourselves as active MOOC participants it is understood that not all the courses meet the user goals or effective to the users. In this empirical research we tried to evaluate the effectiveness of MOOCs. We enrolled in 22 courses from 5 different platforms and evaluated the courses while actively participating. We used 2 evaluation frameworks based on empirical research in this process. Evaluation results indicated a quality variation in the platforms and in between courses within the same platform as well. These factors, paired with the feeling of isolation, have a high influence on learners who do not complete the course in which they have enrolled. To overcome this situation, we propose a system to provide periodically MOOC learners with visual information on a Web-based Learner Dashboard, showing them their progress and engagement in the MOOC. This provided information is part of an Intervention Strategy on the learning of these learners. Though MOOCs have a recent history, much has been articulated and MOOCs are claimed to be a revolution in education while some others claimed that MOOCs are a hype that will eventually fade away. In this context, this research aims to investigate MOOC research by reviewing MOOC literature. The findings of the study suggest that MOOC interest tend to continue, and the evidence-based empirical MOOC research is increasing steadily. MOOC research area is dominated mostly by educational research; however, other research areas demonstrate that there is an interest from other research areas which is thought to be promising. Regional interest demonstrates that USA, Spain and UK are leading countries; and most interest stems from developed countries with Anglo-Saxon cultures. Likewise, the leading higher education institutions in MOOC research are located in Europe or USA. It is also promising that nearly half of the MOOC research is funded by stated agencies. The study concludes that MOOCs are evolving and, based on research findings, it is moving from Slope of Enlightenment to Plateau of Productivity in Gartner hype cycle.</p><div resources that instructors of massive open online courses (MOOCs) use to improve the personalization of their MOOCs. Following email interviews with 25 MOOC and open education leaders regarding MOOC personalization, a questionnaire was developed. This questionnaire was then completed by 152 MOOC instructors from around the world. While more than 8 in 10 respondents claimed heavy involvement in designing their MOOCs, only one-third placed extensive effort on meeting unique learner needs during course design, and even fewer respondents were concerned with personalization during course delivery. An array of instructional practices, technology tools, and content resources were leveraged by instructors to personalize MOOC-based learning environments. Some MOOC platforms are part of the institution but some platforms are built by individual teachers or instructors. The objective of this study to reviews about characteristics in MOOC platforms and evaluation of comparison based on previous studies with specific in MOOC platforms. The databases in MOOC studies found in four databases namely Google Scholar, IEEExplore, Elsevier Science Direct, and Emerald. After the databases filtered, 20 papers in MOOC studies that selected and 4 databases related in development Open Learning and Udemy platforms.
