In this talk we report on the first results of experiments with implementations of nonlinear integrable beam optics. The first of its kind practical realization of a two-dimensional integrable system in a strongly-focusing storage ring was demonstrated allowing among other things for stable beam circulation near or at the integer resonance. Also presented will be the highlights of the world鈥檚 first demonstration of optical stochastic beam cooling and other selected results of IOTA鈥檚 broad experimental program.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Nonlinear optics measurements in IOTA

Nonlinear integrable optics is a recently proposed accelerator lattice design approach which allows to generate an amplitude dependent tune shift which is needed in high brightness accelerators to mitigate fast coherent instabilities. Whereas usually octupoles are used to achieve this task, this concept allows doing so without exciting any resonances, in turn preventing any particle loss. The concept is based around a special magnet design, together with speci铿乧 constraints on the optics of the accelerator. To study such a system, the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) was recently constructed and commissioned at Fermilab. For the assessment of the performance of this concept, good knowledge of the optics and the (non-)linear dynamics without the special magnet is of key importance. As such, measurements were conducted in the IOTA ring, using the captured turn-by-turn data by the beam position monitors after excitation to infer quantities such as amplitude detuning and resonance driving terms. In this note, 铿乺st results of these measurements are presented.

CERN. Two compensator prototypes were installed in the machine during the EYETS16-17 and the first evidence of compensation were observed during the MD block 1 (FILLS 5898 and 5900, 9 h assigned on 1st July 2017).This study was also scheduled for the MD block 3 but could not be performed due to the machine unavailability (9 h assigned, 2 h available but unfortunately not exploitable for measurements). In MD block 4 an additional slot was scheduled (FILLS 6434 and 6435, 10 h on 29th November 2017)

CERN.

An electron lens can serve as an effective mechanism for suppressing coherent instabilities in high intensity storage rings through nonlinear amplitude dependent betatron tune shift. However, the addition of a strong localized nonlinear focusing element to the accelerator lattice may lead to undesired effects in particle dynamics. We evaluate the effect of a Gaussian electron lens on single particle motion in HL-LHC using numerical tracking simulations, and compare the results to the case when an equal tune spread is generated by conventional octupole magnets.

<dc:source xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">FERMILAB-TM-2659-AD-APC</dc:source>

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">AD</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">APC</dc:hasVersion>

Higher Order Dispersion and Momentum Compaction in MAD-X/PTC using NormalForm

Dispersion and the momentum compaction factor have been treated since ages in the literature of accelerator physics to first order. Since quite some time dispersion and the momentum compaction factor can be derived via PTC and thereby in MAD-X to arbitrary order (presently hard-wired to fourth order in MAD-X). It was realized that little is known about this high order derivation in the community. In addition to shedding light on complex nonlinear effects, these studies are applied to the design of hollow electron lenses (HEL) for active beam halo control. In the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), a considerable amount of energy will be stored in the beam tails. To control and clean the beam halo, the installation of two hollow electron lenses, one per beam, is being considered. In standard electron-lens operation, a proton bunch sees the same electron current at every revolution. Pulsed electron beam operation (i.e., different currents for different turns) is also considered, because it can widen the range of achievable halo removal rates. For an axially symmetric electron beam, only protons in the halo are excited. If a residual field is present at the location of the beam core, these particles are exposed to time-dependent transverse kicks and to noise. We discuss the numerical simulations and the experiments conducted in 2016 and 2017 at injection energy in the LHC. The excitation patterns were generated by the transverse feedback and damping system, which acted as a flexible source of dipole kicks. Proton beam losses, emittances, and transverse distributions were recorded as a function of excitation patterns and strengths. The resonant excitations induced rich dynamical effects and nontrivial changes of the beam distributions, which, to our knowledge, have not previously been observed and studied in this detail. We conclude with a discussion of the tolerable and achievable residual fields and proposals for further studies.

Fitterer, of Resonant and Random Excitations on the Proton Beam in the Large Hadron Collider, with Applications to the Design of Pulsed Hollow Electron Lenses for Active Halo Control

We present the results of numerical simulations and experimental studies about the effects of resonant and random excitations on proton losses, emittances, and beam distributions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Fitterer, MADX-SC

Since a few years MAD-X allows to simulate beam dynamics with frozen space charge 脿 la Basseti-Erskine. The limitation of simulation with a fixed distribution is somewhat overcome by an adaptive approach that consists of updating the emittances once per turn and by recalculating the Twiss parameters after certain intervals, typically every 1,000 turns to avoid an excessive slowdown of the simulations. The technique has been benchmarked for the PS machines over 800,聽000 turns. MADX-SC code developments are being discussed that include the re-introduction of acceleration into MAD-X and more advanced beam sigma calculations that will avoid code interruptions for the Twiss parameters calculation.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Simulations in Support of Wire Beam-Beam Compensation Experiment at the LHC

The compensation of long-range beam-beam interaction with current wires is considered as a possible technology for the HL-LHC upgrade project. A demonstration experiment is planned in the present LHC machine starting in 2018. This paper summarizes the tracking studies of long range beam-beam effect compensation in the LHC aimed to aid in planning the demonstration experiment. The impact of wire compensators is demonstrated on the tune footprints, dynamic aperture, beam emittance and beam intensity degradation. The simulations are performed with SIXTRACK code. The symplectic transport map for the wire element, its verification and implementation into the code are also discussed.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Effect of a resonant excitation on the evolution of the beam emittance and halo population

Collimation with hollow electron beams or lenses (HEL) is currently one of the most promising concepts for active halo control in HL-LHC. In previous studies it has been shown that the halo can be efficiently removed with a hollow electron lens. Equally important as an efficient removal of the halo, is to demonstrate that the core stays unperturbed. In the case of an ideal hollow electron lens without bends, the field at the location of the beam core vanishes and the core thus remains unperturbed. In reality, the field at the beam core does not vanish entirely due to imperfections in the electron beam profile and the electron lens bends necessary to guide the electron in and out of the proton aperture. In particular, in the case of a pulsed operation of the electron lens the non-vanishing residual field induces noise on the proton beam. To identify the most sensitive pulsing patterns for the resonant mode and derive tolerances on the profile imperfections, a first MD (MD1415) was carried out on 24.08.2016 [1] and a second MD on 17.09.2017. In this note we present the results of the second MD (MD2167), which focused on confirming a part of the results of the first MD and testing in addition a resonant excitation for which no effect on the beam core is expected and the effect of random uniform noise in addition.

CERN. As the 尾* decreases the 尾-functions in the inner triplet (IT) increase resulting in a higher sensitivity of the HL-LHC to ground motion in the IT region or to increases of the low frequency noise. Noise can in general lead to emittance growth and higher halo population and diffusion rate. However, it is usually assumed in the literature that only frequencies close to the betatron frequencies and sidebands have an effect on the emittance and tail population. To test this theory, an MD was carried out to observe if also low frequency noise can lead to emittance growth and stronger halo population and diffusion. This MD conducted on 24.08.2016 follows a previous MD on 05.11.2015/06.11.2015

CERN. Both beam losses and emittance growth could be mitigated by compensat-ing the non-linear LRBB kick with a correctly placed current carrying wire. Such a compensation scheme is currently being studied in the LHC through a demonstration test using current-bearing wires embedded into col-limator jaws, installed either side of the high luminosity interaction regions. For HL-LHC two options are considered, a current-bearing wire as for the demonstrator, or electron lenses, as the ideal distance between the particle beam and compensating current may be too small to allow the use of solid materials. This paper reports on the ongoing activities for both options, covering the progress of the wire-in-jaw collimators, the foreseen LRBB experiments at the LHC, and first considerations for the design of the electron lenses to ultimately replace material wires for HL-LHC.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Effect of a resonant excitation on the evolution of the beam emittance and halo population

Collimation with hollow electron beams or lenses (HEL) is currently one of the most promising concepts for active halo control in HL-LHC. In previous studies it has been shown that the halo can be efficiently removed with a hollow electron lens. Equally important as an efficient removal of the halo, is to demonstrate that the core stays unperturbed. In the case of an ideal hollow electron lens without bends, the field at the location of the beam core vanishes and the core remains unperturbed. To identify the most sensitive pulsing patterns for the resonant mode and derive tolerances on the profile imperfections, a first MD was carried out of which the first results are presented in this note.

CERN. In order to further increase the diffusion rates for a fast halo removal as e.g. desired before the squeeze, the electron lens (e-lens) can be operated in pulsed mode. In case of profile imperfections in the electron beam the pulsing of the e-lens induces noise on the proton beam which can, depending on the frequency content and strength, lead to emittance growth. In order to study the sensitivity to the pulsing pattern and the amplitude, a beam study (machine development MD) at the LHC has been proposed for August 2016 and we present in this note the preparatory simulations and estimates.

<dc:source xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">FERMILAB-TM-2635-AD</dc:source>

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">2635</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">AD</dc:hasVersion>

The High Luminosity Challenge: Potential and Limitations of High-Intensity High-Brightness Beams in the LHC and its Injectors

High-intensity and high-brightness beams are key ingredients to maximize the integrated luminosity of the LHC and exploit its full potential. The magnitude of this crossing angle is a complicated function of the bunch charge, the number of long-range beam-beam interactions, of 尾* and type of optics (flat or round), and possible compensation or additive effects between several low-尾 insertions in the ring depending on the orientation of the crossing plane at each interaction point. About 15 years ago, the use of current bearing wires was proposed at CERN in order to mitigate the longrange beam-beam effects, therefore offering the possibility to minimize the crossing angle with all the beneficial effects this might have: on the luminosity performance by reducing the need for crab-cavities or lowering their voltage, on the required aperture of the final focus magnets, on the strength of the orbit corrector involved in the crossing bumps, and finally on the heat load and radiation dose deposited in the final focus quadrupoles. In this paper, a semi-analytical approach is developed for the compensation of the long-range beam-beam interactions with current wires. This reveals the possibility of achieving optimal correction through a careful adjustment of the aspect ratio of the 尾 functions at the wire position. We consider the baseline luminosity upgrade plan of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC project), and compare it to alternative scenarios where modifications are applied to optics, crossing angle, or orientation of the crossing plane in the two low-尾 insertions of the ring. For all these configurations, the beneficial impact of beam-beam compensation devices is then demonstrated on the tune footprint, the dynamical aperture, and/or the frequency map analysis of the non-linear beam dynamics as the main figures of merit.

<dc:source xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">CERN-ACC-2015-0095</dc:source>

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">2015</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">0095</dc:hasVersion>

HL-LHC Operational Scenarios

The main aim of this document is to have a clearly identified set of beam and machine parameters to be used for numerical simulations.

CERN. It is based on an electron beam (possibly pulsed or modulated in intensity) guided by strong axial magnetic fields which overlaps with the circulating beam in a short section of the ring. The concept was tested experimentally at the Fermilab Tevatron collider using a hollow electron gun installed in one of the Tevatron electron lenses. Within the US LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP) and the European FP7 HiLumi LHC Design Study, we are proposing a conceptual design for applying this technique to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. A prototype hollow electron gun for the LHC was built and tested. The expected performance of the hollow electron beam collimator was based on Tevatron experiments and on numerical tracking simulations. Halo removal rates and enhancements of halo diffusivity were estimated as a function of beam and lattice parameters. Proton beam core lifetimes and emittance growth rates were checked to ensure that undesired effects were suppressed. Hardware specifications were based on the Tevatron devices and on preliminary engineering integration studies in the LHC machine. Required resources and a possible timeline were also outlined, together with a brief discussion of alternative halo-removal schemes and of other possible uses of electron lenses to improve the performance of the LHC.

<dc:source xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:1405.2033</dc:source>

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['arXiv:1405.2033']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:1405.2033</dc:hasVersion>

Beam-beam compensation studies in the Tevatron with electron lenses

At the Fermilab Tevatron collider, we studied the feasibility of suppressing the antiproton head-on beam-beam tune spread using a magnetically confined 5-keV electron beam with Gaussian transverse profile overlapping with the circulating beam. When electron cooling of antiprotons was applied in regular Tevatron operations, the nonlinear head-on beam-beam effect on antiprotons was small. Therefore, we first focused on the operational aspects, such as beam alignment and stability, and on fundamental observations of tune shifts, tune spreads, lifetimes, and emittances. We also attempted two special collider stores with only 3 proton bunches colliding with 3 antiproton bunches, to suppress long-range forces and enhance head-on effects. We present here the results of this study and a comparison between numerical simulations and observations. These results contributed to the application of this compensation concept to RHIC at Brookhaven.

<dc:source xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:1312.5006</dc:source>

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['arXiv:1312.5006']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:1312.5006</dc:hasVersion>

Beam diffusion measurements using collimator scans in the LHC

The time evolution of beam losses during a collimator scan provides information on halo diffusion and population. This is an essential input for machine performance characterization and for the design of collimation systems. Beam halo measurements in the CERN Large Hadron Collider were conducted through collimator scrapings in a dedicated beam study for the first time at 4 TeV. Four scans were performed with two collimators, in the vertical plane for beam 1 and horizontally for beam 2, before and after bringing the beams into collisions. Inward and outward steps were performed. A diffusion model was used to interpret the observed loss rate evolution in response to the collimator steps. With this technique, diffusion coefficients were estimated as a function of betatron oscillation amplitude from approximately 3 to 7 standard deviations of the transverse beam distribution. A comparison of halo diffusion and core emittance growth rates is also presented.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Linear Lattice Modeling of the Recycler Ring at Fermilab

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Progress with Collision Optics of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Measurement and Optimization of the Lattice Functions in the Debuncher Ring at Fermilab

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>
