It is primarily known as one of the two mountains in the central region of the land of Canaan, the other being Mount Gerizim. These mountains are situated near the ancient city of Shechem, in what is now the modern-day West Bank.

Biblical References:

1. Deuteronomy 11:29 : "When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess, you are to proclaim the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal." This verse introduces the concept of Mount Ebal as the mountain of curses, contrasting with Mount Gerizim, the mountain of blessings. This distinction is part of the covenant renewal ceremony that the Israelites were to perform upon entering the Promised Land.

2. Deuteronomy 27:4-8 : "And when you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I am commanding you today, and coat them with plaster. There you are to build an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You must not use any iron tool on them. You shall build the altar of the LORD your God with uncut stones and offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God. There you are to sacrifice peace offerings, eat, and rejoice in the presence of the LORD your God. And you shall write clearly on the stones all the words of this law." This passage details the instructions given to the Israelites to construct an altar on Mount Ebal, where they were to inscribe the law, symbolizing the covenant between God and His people.

3. Joshua 8:30-35 : "At that time Joshua built an altar on Mount Ebal to the LORD, the God of Israel, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool had been used. And on it they offered burnt offerings to the LORD, and they sacrificed peace offerings. And there, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua inscribed on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written. All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on either side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD, facing the Levitical priests who carried it. Half of the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had formerly commanded for the blessing of the people of Israel. Afterward, Joshua read aloud all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—according to all that is written in the Book of the Law. There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua failed to read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners who lived among them." This account describes the fulfillment of Moses' command by Joshua, emphasizing the importance of Mount Ebal in the reaffirmation of the covenant.

Historical and Theological Significance:

Mount Ebal holds a crucial place in Israelite history as a site of covenant renewal and commitment to the laws given by God. The altar built on Mount Ebal, constructed of uncut stones, signifies purity and obedience to divine instructions. The mountain's association with curses serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience to God's commandments.

Theologically, Mount Ebal represents the dual nature of the covenant relationship between God and Israel, highlighting both blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. This duality underscores the importance of faithfulness and the serious nature of the covenantal promises.

Archaeological Insights:

Archaeological studies have explored the region around Mount Ebal, with some findings suggesting the presence of ancient structures that may correlate with the biblical narrative. These studies contribute to the understanding of the historical context of the biblical events associated with Mount Ebal.

In summary, Mount Ebal is a pivotal location in the biblical narrative, symbolizing the covenantal relationship between God and His people, marked by the solemn ceremony of blessings and curses. Its role in the history of Israel serves as a testament to the enduring significance of obedience and faithfulness in the life of the covenant community.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Ebal
ancient heaps
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Ebal
(stone, bare mountain).

One of the sons of Shobal the son of Seir. As you journey from Jerusalem, and turn to pass through the valley west-northwest to Shechem, mount Ebal is on the right hand and mount Gerizim on the left. Some have described the count of cursing as sterile and desolate, and Gerizim as smiling and fertile. But at present there is little difference between their opposing fronts, which are alike, steep and barren. Mount Gerizim, however, is said to have a more fertile background, and to be a little higher than mount Ebal. The base of the latter is full of sepulchral excavations. Gerizim on the South. The mountain (Arabic el-Iclamiyeh) reaches a height of 1,402 ft. above the floor of the valley, and 3,077 ft. above the level of the Mediterranean. The Samaritans feign that Gerizim is the higher; but it is more than 200 ft. lower than Ebal. These two mountains overhang the pass through which runs the main artery of intercourse between East and West, the city of Nablus lying in the throat of the valley to the West. The ancient Shechem probably stood farther to the East. The lower slopes of Ebal as one ascends from Nablus are covered with gardens and orchards, the copious streams from the fountains under Gerizim washing its foot, and spreading fertility and beauty. The vine, the fig and the olive grow luxuriantly. Higher up we scramble over rough rocky terraces, where grow only the ubiquitous thistles and prickly shrubs.

From the broad summit a view of surpassing interest and beauty rewards the climber's toil. Westward beyond the hills and the plain of Sharon with its coast line of yellow sand running from Jaffa to Carmel, stretch the blue waters of the Mediterranean. From Carmel to Gilboa, Little Hermon and Tabor, roll the fruitful breadths of Esdraelon: the uplands of Galilee, with Nazareth showing on the brow above the plain, rise away to the buttresses of Lebanon in the North. From the snowy peak of Hermon the eye ranges over the Jaulan and Mount Gilead to the Mountain of Bashan in the East, with the steep eastern wall of the Jordan valley in the foreground. The land of Moab is visible beyond the Dead Sea; and the heights around Jerusalem close the view on the South.

Round this splendid mountain, seen from afar on all sides, religious associations have gathered from old time. The Moslem Weley on the top-the usual white-domed sanctuary-where it is said the head of the Baptist is buried, is doubtless the modern representative of some ancient seat of worship. The ruins of a church show that Christians also came under the spell of the hill.

The slopes of Ebal toward Gerizim played their part in that memorable scene, when, having conquered the central region of Palestine, Joshua led the people hither, erected an altar of unhewn stones, wrote upon the stones-either engraving on the stone itself, or impressing on plaster placed there for the purpose-a copy of the law, and then, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded, placed half the tribes on the slope of Gerizim, and half on those of Ebal, and the ark with the priests and Levites in the center. Then with dramatic responses from the two divisions of the people, the blessings and the cursings of the law were read (Joshua 8:30; compare Deuteronomy 27:11). In all the future, therefore, this mountain, towering aloft in the very heart of the land, would remind beholders far and near of their people's covenant with God. It has sometimes been questioned if the reading of the law could be heard by the people in the way described. The formation of the sides of the valley at the narrowest part, and the acoustics, which have been tested more than once, leave no reasonable doubt as to the possibility.

The importance of the mountain from a military point of view is illustrated by the ruins of a massive fortress found on the summit.

W.
