This is especially pronounced in multiple impeller systems where flow complexity is increased. By choosing proper mixing parameters, what closely depends on the knowledge of the hydrodynamics in a mixing vessel, the process of batch cooling crystallization may considerably be improved. The values that render useful information when making this choice are mixing time and power consumption. The predominant motivation for this work was to investigate the extent to which radial dual impeller configuration influences mixing time, power consumption and consequently the values of metastable zone width and nucleation rate. In this research, crystallization of borax was conducted in a 15 dm3 baffled batch cooling crystallizer with an aspect ratio (H/T) of 1.3. Mixing was performed using two straight blade turbines (4-SBT) mounted on the same shaft that generated radial fluid flow. Experiments were conducted at different values of N/NJS ratio (impeller speed/ minimum impeller speed for complete suspension), D/T ratio (impeller diameter/crystallizer diameter), c/D ratio (lower impeller off-bottom clearance/impeller diameter), and s/D ratio (spacing between impellers/impeller diameter). Mother liquor was saturated at 30&deg;C and was cooled at the rate of 6&deg;C/h. Its concentration was monitored in line by Na-ion selective electrode. From the values of supersaturation that was monitored continuously over process time, it was possible to determine the metastable zone width and subsequently the nucleation rate using the Mersmann&rsquo;s nucleation criterion. For all applied dual impeller configurations, the mixing time was determined by potentiometric method using a pulse technique, while the power consumption was determined using a torque meter produced by Himmelstein &amp; Co. Results obtained in this investigation show that dual impeller configuration significantly influences the values of mixing time, power consumption as well as the metastable zone width and nucleation rate. A special attention should be addressed to the impeller spacing considering the flow interaction that could be more or less pronounced depending on the spacing value. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dual%20impeller%20crystallizer" title="dual impeller crystallizer">dual impeller crystallizer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mixing%20time" title=" mixing time"> mixing time</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=power%20consumption" title=" power consumption"> power consumption</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metastable%20zone%20width" title=" metastable zone width"> metastable zone width</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nucleation%20rate" title=" nucleation rate"> nucleation rate</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/38553/impact-of-mixing-parameters-on-homogenization-of-borax-solution-and-nucleation-rate-in-dual-radial-impeller-crystallizer" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/38553.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">296</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">434</span> Impact of Fluid Flow Patterns on Metastable Zone Width of Borax in Dual Radial Impeller Crystallizer at Different Impeller Spacings </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20%C4%8Celan">A. In dual impeller systems, which are characterized by a more complex hydrodynamics due to the possible fluid flow interactions, revealing a clear link between mixing parameters and crystallization kinetics is still an open issue. The aim of this work is to establish this connection by investigating how fluid flow patterns, generated by two impellers mounted on the same shaft, reflect on metastable zone width of borax decahydrate, one of the most important parameters of the crystallization process. Investigation was carried out in a 15-dm3 bench scale batch cooling crystallizer with an aspect ratio (<em>H</em>/<em>T</em>) equal to 1.3. For this reason, two radial straight blade turbines (4-SBT) were used for agitation. Experiments were conducted at different impeller spacings at the state of complete suspension. During the process of an unseeded batch cooling crystallization, solution temperature and supersaturation were continuously monitored what enabled a determination of the metastable zone width. Hydrodynamic conditions in the vessel achieved at different impeller spacings investigated were analyzed in detail. This was done firstly by measuring the mixing time required to attain the desired level of homogeneity. Secondly, fluid flow patterns generated in a described dual impeller system were both photographed and simulated by VisiMix Turbulent software. Also, a comparison of these two visualization methods was performed. Experimentally obtained results showed that metastable zone width is definitely affected by the hydrodynamics in the crystallizer. This means that this crystallization parameter can be controlled not only by adjusting the saturation temperature or cooling rate, as is usually done, but also by choosing a suitable impeller spacing that will result in a formation of crystals of wanted size distribution. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dual%20impeller%20crystallizer" title="dual impeller crystallizer">dual impeller crystallizer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fluid%20flow%20pattern" title=" fluid flow pattern"> fluid flow pattern</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metastable%20zone%20width" title=" metastable zone width"> metastable zone width</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mixing%20time" title=" mixing time"> mixing time</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radial%20impeller" title=" radial impeller"> radial impeller</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/80502/impact-of-fluid-flow-patterns-on-metastable-zone-width-of-borax-in-dual-radial-impeller-crystallizer-at-different-impeller-spacings" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/80502.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">196</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">433</span> Hydrodynamics of Dual Hybrid Impeller of Stirred Reactor Using Radiotracer</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Noraishah%20Othman">Noraishah Othman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Siti%20K.%20Kamarudin"> Siti K. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the residence time distribution (RTD) of two hybrid mixers and to represent the respective mixers by RTD model. Each type of mixer will experience five radiotracer experiments using Tc99m as source of tracer and scintillation detectors NaI(Tl) are used for tracer detection. The results showed that mixer in parallel model and mixers in series with exchange can represent the flow model in mixer A whereas only mixer in parallel model can represent Type B mixer well than other models. In conclusion, Type A impeller, Rushton impeller above PBT, reduced the presence of dead zone in the mixer significantly rather than Type B. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hybrid%20impeller" title="hybrid impeller">hybrid impeller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=residence%20time%20distribution%20%28RTD%29" title=" residence time distribution (RTD)"> residence time distribution (RTD)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radiotracer%20experiments" title=" radiotracer experiments"> radiotracer experiments</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RTD%20model" title=" RTD model"> RTD model</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/37495/hydrodynamics-of-dual-hybrid-impeller-of-stirred-reactor-using-radiotracer" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/37495.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">358</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">432</span> Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Impeller Trimming on Fluid Flow inside a Centrifugal Pump</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rouhollah%20Torabi">Rouhollah Torabi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ashkan%20Chavoshi"> Ashkan Chavoshi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sheyda%20Almasi"> Sheyda Almasi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shima%20Almasi"> Shima Almasi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper the effect of impeller trim on centrifugal pump performance is studied and the most important effect which is decreasing the flow rate, differential head and efficiency is analyzed. Water then enters stationary pitot-tube collector (diffuser), which discharges to the outside. By means of ANSYS Fluent 15.0, the internal flow characteristics for Pitot-tube Jet pump with standard pitot and curved pitot are studied. Under design condition, realizable k-e turbulence model and SIMPLEC algorithm are used to calculate 3D flow field inside both pumps. The simulation results reveal that energy is imparted to the flow by impeller and inside the rotor, forced vortex type flow is observed. Total pressure decreases inside pitot-tube whereas static pressure increases. Changing pitot-tube from standard to curved shape results in minimum flow circulation inside pitot-tube and leads to a higher pump performance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CFD" title="CFD">CFD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flow%20circulation" title=" flow circulation"> flow circulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high%20pressure%20pump" title=" high pressure pump"> high pressure pump</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=impeller" title=" impeller"> impeller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=internal%20flow" title=" internal flow"> internal flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pickup%20tube%20pump" title=" pickup tube pump"> pickup tube pump</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rectangle%20channels" title=" rectangle channels"> rectangle channels</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rotating%20casing" title=" rotating casing"> rotating casing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=turbulence" title=" turbulence"> turbulence</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132118/simulation-of-internal-flow-field-of-pitot-tube-jet-pump" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132118.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">160</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">430</span> Effect of Surface Quality of 3D Printed Impeller on the Performance of a Centrifugal Compressor</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nader%20Zirak">Nader Zirak</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohammadali%20Shirinbayan"> Mohammadali Shirinbayan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abbas%20Tcharkhtchi"> Abbas Tcharkhtchi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Additive manufacturing is referred to as a method for fabrication of parts with a mechanism of layer by layer. Slurry erosion performance of deep cryogenic treatment on impeller steel SS 316 L has been investigated. Slurry collected from an actual irrigation pump used as the abrasive media in an erosion test rig. An attempt has been made to study the effect of velocity of fluid and impingement angle by constant concentration (ppm) on the slurry erosion behavior of these cryotreated steels under different experimental conditions. The slurry erosion wear analysis of cryotreated and untreated steels was done. The slurry erosion performance of cryotreated SS 316L impeller steel has been found to superior to that of untreated steel. Metallurgical investigation, hardness as well as %age of carbide in both types of steel was also investigated. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=deep%20cryogenic%20treatment" title="deep cryogenic treatment">deep cryogenic treatment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=impeller" title=" impeller"> impeller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Irrigation%20pumps%20SS316L" title=" Irrigation pumps SS316L"> Irrigation pumps SS316L</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=slurry%20erosion" title=" slurry erosion"> slurry erosion</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33629/slurry-erosion-behaviour-of-cryotreated-ss316l-impeller-steel-used-for-irrigation-pumps" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33629.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">392</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">427</span> Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modeling to Predict the Impact of Nuclear Reactor Mixed Tank Flows Using the Momentum Equation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joseph%20Amponsah">Joseph Amponsah</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This research proposes an equation to predict and determine the momentum source equation term after factoring in the radial friction between the fluid and the blades and the impeller's propulsive power. This research aims to look at how CFD software can be used to predict the effect of flows in nuclear reactor stirred tanks through a momentum source equation and the concentration distribution of tracers that have been introduced in reactor tanks. The estimated findings, including the dimensionless concentration curves, power, and pumping numbers, dimensionless velocity profiles, and mixing times 4, were contrasted with results from tests in stirred containers. The investigation was carried out in Part I for vessels that were agitated by one impeller on a central shaft. The two types of impellers employed were an ordinary Rushton turbine and a 6-bladed 45° pitched blade turbine. The simulations made use of numerous reference frame techniques and the common k-e turbulence model. The impact of the grid type was also examined; unstructured, structured, and unique user-defined grids were looked at. The CFD model was used to simulate the flow field within the Rushton turbine nuclear reactor stirred tank. This method was validated using experimental data that were available close to the impeller tip and in the bulk area. Additionally, analyses of the computational efficiency and time using MRF and SM were done. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ansys%20fluent" title="Ansys fluent">Ansys fluent</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=momentum%20equation" title=" momentum equation"> momentum equation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CFD" title=" CFD"> CFD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=prediction" title=" prediction"> prediction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160664/using-computational-fluid-dynamics-cfd-modeling-to-predict-the-impact-of-nuclear-reactor-mixed-tank-flows-using-the-momentum-equation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160664.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">79</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">426</span> Extrudate Swell under the Effect of Radial Flow and Intrinsic Factors to the Polymer Upstream of the Die</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hela%20Krir">Hela Krir</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abdelhak%20Ayadi"> Abdelhak Ayadi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chedly%20Bradaii"> Chedly Bradaii</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The influence of both intrinsic factors, elastic energy and memory effect, and radial flow on the appearance and the evolution of the extrudate swelling are investigated in the present work. The experiments have been performed with linear polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via a capillary rheometer in which a convergent radial flow was created upstream the contraction. The correspondence between the effects of radial flow, entry elastic stored energy and memory effect is discussed. In particular, as the influence of the considered radial flow, extrudate photographs showed that when the gap ratio is reduced, the extrudate swell is lessened than what it is when radial flow geometry is not installed. Moreover, with a narrower gap, the polymer stores less energy during its passage through the die which implies a lower extrudate swelling at the outlet of the die. In this paper, the Radial Strain and SR is studied using tagged MRI (tMRI) data during the cardiac cycle on the mid-ventricle level of the left ventricle. Materials and methods: The short-axis view of the left ventricle of five healthy human (three males and two females) and four healthy male rats were imaged using tagged magnetic resonance imaging (tMRI) technique covering the whole cardiac cycle on the mid-ventricle level. Images were processed using Image J software to calculate the left ventricle wall Radial Strain and radial SR. The left ventricle Radial Strain and radial SR were calculated at the mid-ventricular level during the cardiac cycle. The peak Radial Strain for the human and rat heart was 40.7±1.44, and 46.8±0.68 respectively, and it occurs at 40% of the cardiac cycle for both human and rat heart. The peak diastolic and systolic radial SR for human heart was -1.78 s-1 ± 0.02 s-1 and 1.10±0.08 s-1 respectively, while for rat heart it was -5.16± 0.23s-1 and 4.25±0.02 s-1 respectively. Conclusion: This results show the ability of the tMRI data to characterize the cardiac motion during the cardiac cycle including diastolic and systolic phases which can be used as an indicator of the cardiac dysfunction by estimating the left ventricle Radial Strain and radial SR at different locations of the cardiac tissue. This study approves the validity of the tagged MRI data to describe accurately the cardiac radial motion. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=left%20ventricle" title="left ventricle">left ventricle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radial%20strain" title=" radial strain"> radial strain</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tagged%20MRI" title=" tagged MRI"> tagged MRI</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cardiac%20cycle" title=" cardiac cycle"> cardiac cycle</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21036/calculation-the-left-ventricle-wall-radial-strain-and-radial-sr-using-tagged-magnetic-resonance-imaging-data-tmri" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21036.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">482</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">424</span> Rotor Radial Vent Pumping in Large Synchronous Electrical Machines</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Darren%20Camilleri">Darren Camilleri</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Robert%20Rolston"> Robert Rolston</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Rotor radial vents make use of the pumping effect to increase airflow through the active material thus reduce hotspot temperatures. The effect of rotor radial pumping in synchronous machines has been studied previously. This paper presents the findings of previous studies and builds upon their theories using a parametric numerical approach to investigate the rotor radial pumping effect. The pressure head generated by the poles and radial vent flow-rate were identified as important factors in maximizing the benefits of the pumping effect. The use of Minitab and ANSYS Workbench to investigate the key performance characteristics of radial pumping through a Design of Experiments (DOE) was described. CFD results were compared with theoretical calculations. A correlation for each response variable was derived through a statistical analysis. Findings confirmed the strong dependence of radial vent length on vent pressure head, and radial vent cross-sectional area was proved to be significant in maximising radial vent flow rate. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CFD" title="CFD">CFD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cooling" title=" cooling"> cooling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electrical%20machines" title=" electrical machines"> electrical machines</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=regression%20analysis" title=" regression analysis"> regression analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41880/rotor-radial-vent-pumping-in-large-synchronous-electrical-machines" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41880.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">312</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">423</span> Unusual High Origin and Superficial Course of Radial Artery: A Case Report with Embryological Explanation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anasuya%20Ghosh">Anasuya Ghosh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Subhramoy%20Chaudhury"> Subhramoy Chaudhury</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> During routine cadaveric dissection at gross anatomy lab of our institution, a radial artery was found with unusual origin and superficial course. Normally the radial artery takes its origin as one of the terminal branches of brachial artery at the level of the neck of radius. It usually lies along the lateral border of fore arm deep to the brachioradialis muscle. While dissecting a 72-year-old Caucasian female cadaver, it was found that the right sided radial artery originated from the upper part of brachial artery of arm, 2 cm below the lower border of teres major muscle, from the lateral aspect of brachial artery. Then the radial artery superficially crossed the brachial artery and median nerve from lateral to medial direction and rested superficially at the cubital fossa. Embryologically, it can be explained as a failure of disappearance, or abnormal persistence of some insignificant embryonic vessels may give rise to this kind of vascular anomalies. As radial artery is one of the most important upper limb arteries, its variation and related complications are clinically significant. This unusual origin and course of radial artery should be kept in mind by all healthcare providers including surgeons and radiologists during routine venipuncture, orthopedic and plastic surgeries of arm, coronary angiographic procedures in radial approach etc. to prevent unwanted complications. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=brachial%20artery%20anomalies" title="brachial artery anomalies">brachial artery anomalies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=brachio-radial%20artery" title=" brachio-radial artery"> brachio-radial artery</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high%20origin%20radial%20artery" title=" high origin radial artery"> high origin radial artery</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=superficial%20radial%20artery" title=" superficial radial artery"> superficial radial artery</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/72764/unusual-high-origin-and-superficial-course-of-radial-artery-a-case-report-with-embryological-explanation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/72764.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">325</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">422</span> Power Consumption for Viscoplastic Fluid in a Rotating Vessel with an Anchor Impeller </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Draoui%20Belkacem">Draoui Belkacem</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rahmani%20Lakhdar"> Rahmani Lakhdar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Benachour%20Elhadj"> Benachour Elhadj</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seghier%20Oussama"> Seghier Oussama</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Rheology is known to have a strong impact on the flow behavior and the power consumption of mechanically agitated vessels. The blood was modeled as a two phase mixture (an aqueous carbon dioxide solution with carbon dioxide gas) by Drift flux model and the Young-Laplace equation. The distributions of mixture velocities determined from the considered model permitted the calculation of the radial velocity distributions with different values of mean mixture pressure and the calculation of the mean carbon dioxide pressure knowing the mean mixture pressure. The radial velocity distributions are used to deduce a calculation method of the mean mixture pressure through the radial velocity difference between two positions which is measured by ultrasound. The turbulent flow was simulated using standard <em>k</em>-<em>&epsilon;</em> model and simulation was verified using LES whereas transitional flow was simulated using only LES. It has been found that both the shape of tank bottom and the baffles&rsquo; length has significant effect on the flow pattern and velocity distribution below the impeller. In the dished bottom tank with baffles reaching the edge of the dish, the large rotating volume of liquid was formed below the impeller. Liquid in this rotating region was not fully mixing. A dead zone was formed here. The size and the intensity of circulation within this zone calculated by <em>k</em>-<em>&epsilon;</em> model and LES were practically identical what reinforces the accuracy of the numerical simulations. Both types of simulations also show that employing full-length baffles can reduce the size of dead zone formed below the impeller. The LES was also used to simulate the velocity distribution below the impeller in transitional flow and it has been found that secondary circulation loops were formed near the tank bottom in all investigated geometries. However, in this case the length of baffles has smaller effect on the volume of rotating liquid than in the turbulent flow. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=baffles%20length" title="baffles length">baffles length</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dished%20bottom" title=" dished bottom"> dished bottom</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dead%20zone" title=" dead zone"> dead zone</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flow%20field" title=" flow field"> flow field</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46690/the-effect-of-bottom-shape-and-baffle-length-on-the-flow-field-in-stirred-tanks-in-turbulent-and-transitional-flow" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46690.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">295</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">415</span> Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation of Gas-Liquid Phase Stirred Tank</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thiyam%20Tamphasana%20Devi">Thiyam Tamphasana Devi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bimlesh%20Kumar"> Bimlesh Kumar</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique has been applied to simulate the gas-liquid phase in double stirred tank of Rushton impeller. The cavity formed is typically hemispherical, and this report consists of the MATLAB model of the UCG cavity to predict the composition of the output gases. There are seven radial and two time-variant ODEs. A MATLAB solver (ode15s) is used to solve the radial ODEs from the above equations. Two for-loops are implemented in the model, i.e., one for time variations and another for radial variation. In the time loop, the radial odes are solved using the MATLAB solver. The radial loop is nested inside the time loop, and the density odes are numerically solved using the Euler method. The model is validated by comparing it with the literature results of laboratory-scale experiments. The effect of geometrical parameters such as inner radius, fin height, fin length, and fin spacing, as well as the Elenbaas number, is considered. In addition, the effects of augmentation of concentric ring, perforation, and duct are extensively explored in order to enhance the thermal performance of conventional radial heat sink. The results indicate that the Elenbaas number and the fin radius have a significant effect on the thermal performance of the heat sink. The concentric ring affects the performance much, but the degree of affection is highly dependent on the orientation. The perforation always brings about higher thermal performance. The duct can effectively prevent the bypass of the natural convection flow, which in turn reduces the thermal resistance of the radial heat sink significantly. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heat%20transfer" title="heat transfer">heat transfer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radial%20heat%20sink" title=" radial heat sink"> radial heat sink</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=LED" title=" LED"> LED</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elenbaas" title=" Elenbaas"> Elenbaas</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/36553/thermal-performance-of-radial-heat-sinks-for-led-applications" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/36553.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">404</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">411</span> Loading Factor Performance of a Centrifugal Compressor Impeller: Specific Features and Way of Modeling</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=K.%20Soldatova">K. Measured loading factors are linear function of a flow coefficient at an impeller exit. The performance does not depend on the compressibility criterion. To simulate loading factor performances, the authors present two parameters: a loading factor at zero flow rate and an angle between an ordinate and performance line. The calculated loading factor performances of non-viscous are linear too and close to experimental performances. Loading factor performances of several dozens of impellers with different blade exit angles, blade thickness and number, ratio of blade exit/inlet height, and two different type of blade mean line configuration. There are some trends of influence, which are evident &ndash; comparatively small blade thickness influence, and influence of geometry parameters is more for impellers with bigger blade exit angles, etc. Approximating equations for both parameters are suggested. In this work, experimental investigations are carried out in an inline single-stage centrifugal pump with optical access. Hence, it gives the opportunity to enhance the value of CFD tools and standard cavitation measurements. Experiments are conducted using two impellers running in the same volute at 3000 rpm and the same flow rate. One of the impellers used is optimized for lower NPSH₃% by its blade design, whereas the other one is manufactured using a standard casting method. The cavitation is detected by pump performance measurements, vibration measurements and high-speed image recordings. The head drop and the pump casing vibration caused by cavitation are correlated with the visual appearance of the cavitation. The vibration data is recorded in an axial direction of the impeller using accelerometers recording at a sample rate of 131 kHz. The vibration frequency domain data (up to 20 kHz) and the time domain data are analyzed as well as the root mean square values. The high-speed recordings, focusing on the impeller suction side, are taken at 10,240 fps to provide insight into the flow patterns and the cavitation behavior in the rotating impeller. The videos are synchronized with the vibration time signals by a trigger signal. A clear correlation between cloud collapses and abrupt peaks in the vibration signal can be observed. The vibration peaks clearly indicate cavitation, especially at higher NPSHA values where the hydraulic performance is not affected. It is also observed that below a certain NPSHA value, the cavitation started in the inlet bend of the pump. Above this value, cavitation occurs exclusively on the impeller blades. The impeller optimized for NPSH₃% does show a lower NPSH₃% than the standard impeller, but the head drop starts at a higher NPSHA value and is more gradual. Instabilities in the head drop curve of the optimized impeller were observed in addition to a higher vibration level. Furthermore, the cavitation clouds on the suction side appear more unsteady when using the optimized impeller. The shape and location of the cavitation are compared to 3D fluid flow simulations. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental investigations. In conclusion, these investigations attempt to give a more holistic view on the appearance of cavitation by comparing the head drop, vibration spectral data, vibration time signals, image recordings and simulation results. Data indicates that a criterion for cavitation detection could be derived from the vibration time-domain measurements, which requires further investigation. Usually, spectral data is used to analyze cavitation, but these investigations indicate that the time domain could be more appropriate for some applications. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cavitation" title="cavitation">cavitation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=centrifugal%20pump" title=" centrifugal pump"> centrifugal pump</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=head%20drop" title=" head drop"> head drop</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high-speed%20image%20recordings" title=" high-speed image recordings"> high-speed image recordings</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pump%20vibration" title=" pump vibration"> pump vibration</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/129362/investigation-of-cavitation-in-a-centrifugal-pump-using-synchronized-pump-head-measurements-vibration-measurements-and-high-speed-image-recording" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/129362.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">179</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">409</span> Validation of the X-Ray Densitometry Method for Radial Density Pattern Determination of Acacia seyal var. seyal Tree Species</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hanadi%20Mohamed%20Shawgi%20Gamal">Hanadi Mohamed Shawgi Gamal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claus%20Thomas%20Bues"> Claus Thomas Bues</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Wood density is a variable influencing many of the technological and quality properties of wood. Understanding the pattern of wood density radial variation is important for its end-use. The X-ray technique, traditionally applied to softwood species to assess the wood quality properties, due to its simple and relatively uniform wood structure. On the other hand, very limited information is available about the validation of using this technique for hardwood species. The suitability of using the X-ray technique for the determination of hardwood density has a special significance in countries like Sudan, where only a few timbers are well known. This will not only save the time consumed by using the traditional methods, but it will also enhance the investigations of the great number of the lesser known species, the thing which will fill the huge cap of lake information of hardwood species growing in Sudan. The current study aimed to evaluate the validation of using the X-ray densitometry technique to determine the radial variation of wood density of Acacia seyal var. seyal. To this, a total of thirty trees were collected randomly from four states in Sudan. The wood density radial trend was determined using the basic density as well as density obtained by the X-ray densitometry method in order to assess the validation of X-ray technique in wood density radial variation determination. The results showed that the pattern of radial trend of density obtained by X-ray technique is very similar to that achieved by basic density. These results confirmed the validation of using the X-ray technique for Acacia seyal var. seyal density radial trend determination. It also promotes the suitability of using this method in other hardwood species. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=x-ray%20densitometry" title="x-ray densitometry">x-ray densitometry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wood%20density" title=" wood density"> wood density</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Acacia%20seyal%20var.%20seyal" title=" Acacia seyal var. seyal"> Acacia seyal var. seyal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radial%20variation" title=" radial variation"> radial variation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/127038/validation-of-the-x-ray-densitometry-method-for-radial-density-pattern-determination-of-acacia-seyal-var-seyal-tree-species" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/127038.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">152</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">408</span> Solution of the Nonrelativistic Radial Wave Equation of Hydrogen Atom Using the Green&#039;s Function Approach</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=F.%20U.%20Rahman">F. The Lippmann Schwinger equation (integral form of the Schrodinger wave equation) is solved for the nonrelativistic radial wave of hydrogen atom using iterative integration scheme. As the unknown wave function appears on both sides of the Lippmann Schwinger equation, therefore an approximate wave function is used in order to solve the equation. The Green’s function is obtained by the method of Laplace transform for the radial wave equation with excluded potential term. Using the Lippmann Schwinger equation, the product of approximate wave function, the Green’s function and the potential term is integrated iteratively. Finally, the wave function is normalized and plotted against the standard radial wave for comparison. The outcome wave function converges to the standard wave function with the increasing number of iteration. Results are verified for the first fifteen states of hydrogen atom. The method is efficient and consistent and can be applied to complex systems in future. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Green%E2%80%99s%20function" title="Green’s function">Green’s function</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydrogen%20atom" title=" hydrogen atom"> hydrogen atom</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lippmann%20Schwinger%20equation" title=" Lippmann Schwinger equation"> Lippmann Schwinger equation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radial%20wave" title=" radial wave"> radial wave</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/42682/solution-of-the-nonrelativistic-radial-wave-equation-of-hydrogen-atom-using-the-greens-function-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/42682.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">394</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">407</span> Investigation of Changes of Physical Properties of the Poplar Wood in Radial and Longitudinal Axis at Chaaloos Zone</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Afshin%20Veisi">Afshin Veisi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this study, the physical properties of wood in poplar wood (Populous sp.) were analyzed in longitudinal and radial directions of the stem. Three Populous Alba tree were cut in chaloos zone and from each tree, 3 discs were selected at 130cm, half of tree and under of crown. The test samples from pith to bark (heartwood to sapwood) were prepared from these discs for measuring the involved properties such as, wet, dry and critical specific gravity, porosity, volume shrinkage and swelling based on the ASTM standard, and data in two radial and longitudinal directions in the trank were statistically analyzed. Such as, variations of wet, dry and critical specific gravity had in radial direction respectively: irregular increase, increase and increase, and in longitudinal direction respectively: irregular decrease, irregular increase and increase. Results of variations to moisture content and porosity show that in radial direction respectively: irregular increasing and decreasing, and in longitudinal direction from down to up respectively: irregular decreasing and stability. Volume shrinkage and swelling variations show in radial direction irregular and in longitudinal axial regular decreasing. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=poplar%20wood" title="poplar wood">poplar wood</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=physical%20properties" title=" physical properties"> physical properties</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shrinkage" title=" shrinkage"> shrinkage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=swelling" title=" swelling"> swelling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=critical%20specific%20gravity" title=" critical specific gravity"> critical specific gravity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wet%20specific%20gravity" title=" wet specific gravity"> wet specific gravity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dry%20specific%20gravity" title=" dry specific gravity"> dry specific gravity</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49391/investigation-of-changes-of-physical-properties-of-the-poplar-wood-in-radial-and-longitudinal-axis-at-chaaloos-zone" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49391.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">277</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">406</span> Inverse Cauchy Problem of Doubly Connected Domains via Spectral Meshless Radial Point Interpolation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elyas%20Shivanian">Elyas Shivanian</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper, the spectral meshless radial point interpolation (SMRPI) technique is applied to the Cauchy problems of two-dimensional elliptic PDEs in doubly connected domains. It is obtained the unknown data on the inner boundary of the domain while overspecified boundary data are imposed on the outer boundary of the domain by using the SMRPI. Shape functions, which are constructed through point interpolation method using the radial basis functions, help us to treat problem locally with the aim of high order convergence rate. In this way, localization in SMRPI can reduce the ill-conditioning for Cauchy problem. Furthermore, we improve previous results and it is revealed the SMRPI is more accurate and stable by adding strong perturbations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a
