He called on nations to help the country’s beleaguered Christian minority.

"We felt lost after Sunday’s attack against the church in Bagdad," the archbishop of Baghdad, Athanase Matti Shaba Matoka, told Adnkronos International.

The attack by gunmen at Baghdad’s Our Lady of Salvation Catholic church killed at least 52 people, mainly Christians who were taken hostage inside the church, and injured scores. Two priests were among the dead.

"Such attacks are clearly aimed at driving all Christians from Iraq. Once people lose a family member in such violence, they soon think of fleeing the country," he said.

An Al-Qaeda linked group claimed responsibility for the bloodbath in a message posted to an extremist website.

Matoka said he had received a letter from Pope Benedict XVI expressing his condolences for the attack.

The pope condemned the attack after his Angelus prayer in Rome’s St Peter’s Square on Sunday as "an absurd and ferocious attack on Christians in the Middle East".

Around half a million Christians from ancient denominations remain in Iraq. Iraqi Christians have been leaving the country in droves since the US-led invasion in 2003.

"The indifference of the government, which has reduced security for Iraqi citizens, upsets us," said Matoka, acknowleging that some politicians and government ministers had come to the church to express solidarity after the attack.

He called on the international community, especially the United States, to ensure Christians in Iraq could live there in safety.

"They (nations) are responsible for this situation and have to find a solution because we’ve been without a government for six months," he noted.

Iraq is riven by sectarian divisions and its various political forces have failed to form a new government since parliamentary elections in March.

Iraq: Christians ‘lost’ after attack, says Baghdad archbishop – Adnkronos Religion

No Comments Posted on October 9th, 2010 by Mohammed Al-Hamadani

Association with occupying powers makes Christians targets

Category: English Language Articles, Human Rights, Tags: Arabs, Armenians, assassination, Assassination attempts, Assyria, Assyrian, Assyrians, Basra, Bombings, Catholic Church, Catholics, chaldean catholic, chaldean church, Chaldeans, christian minority, christian population, Christians, Christians - Their businesses are targeted by extremists. Their leaders are kidnapped and assassinated. The Christian minority in Iraq, once a community left in peace to prosper, continues to be under threat from a campaign of persecution which has forced as many as 500,000 Christians to flee the country.

During the reign of Saddam Hussein, the estimated 1.4 million Christians – many of them Chaldean-Assyrians and Armenians, with small numbers of Roman Catholics – were generally left alone if they didn’t oppose the government and they lived in relative peace with the country’s Sunnis and Shiites.

Some, such as Tariq Aziz, Saddam’s foreign minister and deputy prime minister, rose to the highest levels of power.

Things changed after the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq toppled Saddam’s regime. Christians became a target of violence when Islamist groups and ordinary Muslims angered by the military action began seeing them as the enemy, associating with them with the "crusaders" – the invading armies of the United States and Britain.

Tensions over their religious ties with the West and their differing beliefs to the strict Islamic majority, which had been simmering for years, spilled over as the occupying forces dug in.

"Iraqi Christians became caught up in the overlapping violence and multiple conflicts unleashed after 2003," Dr. Kristian Ulrichsen, an Iraq expert at the London School of Economics and Political Science, told Deutsche Welle. "They became exposed to the similar patterns of kidnappings, extortion, beheadings, rape and forced taxation that affected all other communities as the erosion of central government control left a security vacuum that was exploited by organised and opportunistic criminality and anti-occupation resistance groups."

"In addition to this, Christians specifically were targeted by Church bombings and assassination attempts owing to a perceived association with the aims and intentions of the occupying forces."

Association with occupying powers makes Christians targets

In 2004, insurgents launched a coordinated bombing campaign targeted churches in Baghdad. In 2007, after Pope Benedict XVI made comments perceived to be anti-Islam, nationwide attacks on churches hit an all-time high and a priest in the northern city of Mosul was kidnapped and later found beheaded. In January 2009, 40 Iraqi Christians were killed and approximately 12,000 fled their homes.

In February this year, at least 10 Iraqi Christians were killed by unknown gunmen in Mosul as the country was preparing for the March 7 elections. The escalating violence ahead of the ballot led to hundreds of Iraqi Christians taking to the streets in a number of protests, chanting slogans such as "Stop the killing of Christians."

During the years since the invasion, life for the Christian minority has become beset by danger. The waves of violent attacks against churches, businesses and homes have forced more than half of the Christian population to flee for their lives, according to statistcs from the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). Those churches which remain standing are mostly empty, their congregations long gone or too afraid to attend.

"The Christian minority in Iraq has been reduced to a shadow of its former self," said Ulrichsen. "Up to two-thirds of the pre-war community has been displaced or forced to flee the country. Although conditions in Iraq have improved somewhat since 2007, the security situation remains intensely fragile and prone to reversal, and the return of refugees and displaced persons to their homes has been very slow and halting."

"There’s a real possibility that 2,000 years of settlement by Christian communities in Iraq is in danger of near-total extinction."

US withdrawal leave Christians’ fate in Iraqi hands

As the United States steps up its military withdrawal from Iraq, the Christian minority is forced to look at the Iraqi security structure for protection. However, the prospect of being protecetd by the Iraqi police and armed forces fails to instill any confidence in the Christian minority.

"The greatest concern about a US pullout is that extremists will exploit any lapses in security and attack vulnerable groups, including Christians," Samer Muscati, an Iraq expert from the Middle East division at Human Rights Watch, told Deutsche Welle.

"Although the Iraqi government publicly condemns violence against Christians and other minority groups, it has not taken measures to bolster security in areas where minorities are particularly vulnerable to attacks, and it has not thoroughly investigated attacks," he added. "Iraqi security forces rarely apprehend, prosecute and punish perpetrators of such attacks, which has created a climate of impunity."

Christians search for ways to protect themselves

One muted proposal to protect the Christian minority involves the creation of an autonomous province on a neglected area of land located to the north and west of Mosul, called Ninawah Plain, which would act as a sanctuary.

While advocates of the idea say it wouldn’t stop the violence against Christians in the large, high-risk cities of Mosul, Baghdad, and Al-Basrah, it would give the Christians a place where their needs could be met, their beliefs supported and their security guaranteed.

The proposals suggest that Ninaweh Plain would an autonomous administrative region in which the Christian minority could govern themselves and would be free to participate in the federalist system which is developing in Iraq.

Creation of autonomous region plagued by problems

However, the idea of an autonomous region for the Christian minority in reality looks unviable.

"The image of a real autonomy is unrealistic," Nizar Hanna, director of the Assyrian Democratic Movement’s Baghdad office, told Deutsche Welle. "Up to now, there are no concrete plans which show how this would work. Even in the Kurdish constitution, they have the right to autonomy in the areas where they are the majority but nowhere is this the case. Besides, there are no areas in which only Christians live. Shabak, Yazidis, Kurds and Arabs also live there."

"To an extent a safe haven for Christians exists in Iraqi Kurdistan," Kristian Ulrichsen said. "Thousands of internally displaced Iraqi Christians have moved there. The number of Iraqi Christians attacked has spiked in the run-up to elections, scheduled for Sunday.

Erbil, Iraq —

In the living room of a cousin’s house, Vivian al-Dahan and her brothers pour out the details of how their father was kidnapped and killed a week ago in Mosul. Their mother, suddenly a widow, keeps trying not to cry.

Adnan Hannah al-Dahan was the first of at least eight Iraqi Christians killed in the northern city in the past two weeks. The murders have led to an exodus of one of the troubled city’s oldest minorities and fears that the attacks will keep Christians from voting in the Iraq election, scheduled for next week.

Iraq’s Christian community is one of the world’s oldest. But since the 2003 invasion, church bombings, kidnappings, and assassinations have scattered the community. Last year, Human Rights Watch estimated that two-thirds of Iraqi Christians have fled their homes since the war began.

The abduction that ended in Mr. Dahan’s death was the second time he had been kidnapped. Two years ago, he was abducted from his corner shop, beaten with a rifle, and stuffed in the trunk of a car. He was kept wrapped in chains under a stairwell until the family borrowed enough money from neighbors to pay a $5,000 ransom.

“They said, ‘you are Christian – you have to pay a tax,’ ” says Vivian. The family didn’t go to the police because they said the kidnappers would have blown up their house.

This time, there was no ransom note and no contact with the men who took him away.

A week after he was abducted, his beaten and scarred body was dumped in the street near their house. Police took his eldest son, Raif, to the morgue to identify him.
Dahan, who had lost the use of his hand after being wounded in the Iran-Iraq war, had been whipped and his shoulder dislocated before he was shot in the mouth.

“We haven’t done anything wrong. Have we done anything wrong? My father wasn’t a policeman or a politician. He was a peaceful man – he loved people and people loved him,” says Vivian.

‘Who is going to stay in the land of the prophets?’

The family says they didn’t leave Mosul after the first kidnapping because their father was too attached to the city to move. Mosul is built on the site of the biblical Ninevah, the burial place of the prophet Jonah and home to some of the earliest Christians.

“He said, ‘if all of us Christians leave, who is going to stay in the land of the prophets and pray in our churches?’ " says Darhan’s widow, Warda. "He said, ‘we were all born in Mosul and we will die in Mosul.’ ”

Their shop was in a corner of their house on a main road in the Baladiyat district of Mosul. Throughout the war, there has been so much gunfire between insurgents and Iraqi and American forces that their home became riddled with bullet holes. When they couldn’t afford to keep replacing the shattered glass they just covered the windows with plastic wrap, Vivian says.

“Our house was a battlefield,” says Warda, huddled on a corner of the sofa and dressed in a black suit. “We would lie on the floor and we wouldn’t know where the bullets were coming from,” says Vivian. “More than once we thought we were dead.”

Although security has improved in Mosul over the past year, the latest killings and death threats delivered by text message have prompted hundreds of families to leave. Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq has become a haven for thousands of Christians fleeing violence in Mosul, less than an hour’s drive away.

Under Saddam Hussein, Kurds were expelled from their homes in Kirkuk and Mosul to the Kurdish territories. Kurdish peshmerga checkpoints on the informal boundary marking Kurdish territory now keep a tight rein on who comes into the region.

When the Kurdish soldiers saw the framed photograph of Vivian’s father with a black ribbon around it, they gave their condolences and waved them through, Vivian says.

Exodus

The Dahan family is a dramatic example of the steady exodus of Christians from their homes in northern Iraq, where they have coexisted for centuries with their Muslim neighbors.

Warda’s father was a priest who was injured when a missile landed on his church in Mosul during the Iran-Iraq war. He and her mother and brothers and sisters were given asylum in Sweden, where her father later died. She hasn’t seen her family since then.

Warda’s eldest daughter, Revan, fled to Sweden two years ago after her husband was kidnapped and his shop blown up in Baghdad. He was later released and joined her in Sweden, which now has 100,000 Iraqi refugees.

Vivian is convinced her brothers would be killed if they went back to Mosul. They would like to join their relatives in Sweden, but as is the case with all countries, applications for asylum have to be made outside Iraq and the family has no money to leave. The chief United Nations representative here has also expressed concern about the targeted killing of Christians in the run-up to Sunday’s parliamentary elections.

The killings ahead of the national vote have raised concerns that Christians will be too afraid to go to the polls. For the archbishop of Kirkuk, the Muslim community must react and take concrete actions. The auxiliary bishop of Baghdad warns that Christians risk a holocaust at a fundamental moment.

Baghdad (AsiaNews) – Christians took to the streets in Mosul and Baghdad and a prayer vigil was held in Kirkuk to protest the spate of killings of their co-religionists. As a single voice, they called for action against “targeted killings” and expressed their opposition to a plan to set up a Christian “ghetto” in the Nineveh Plains. Christian lay and religious leaders as well as countless members of the community came together to sound the alarm against the slaughter of Iraqi Christians and the flight of hundreds of them from Mosul, victims of an Arab-Kurdish conflict that could leave the country without its Christian population.

Following an appeal by Pope Benedict XVI in yesterday’s Angelus (a source of consolation and faith for Christian leaders), AsiaNews spoke to Mgr Emil Shimoun Nona, Chaldean archbishop of Mosul, Mgr Louis Sako, archbishop of Kirkuk, and Mgr Shlemon Warduni, auxiliary bishop of Baghdad, at a fateful moment for the future of Iraqi Christians.

Mgr Emil Shimoun Nona of Mosul confirmed that hundreds of families have left Mosul in the last few days, about 600 in a community of some 4,000 people, according to a United Nations report. “The situation is calmer now, and the exodus has slowed down,” the prelate said, but “we estimate that about 400 families have escaped.”

Yet, the situation continues to be one of great concern. For this reason, thousands of Christians took to the streets to protest against the violence. The community responded in a “positive” way, he said, adding that “the initiative went well.”

Christians have received messages of solidarity and affection, but the security issue remains. “We are asking the central government and local authorities for two things: more security for the community and proper investigations to find out who ordered these killings and who carried them out,” Mgr Nona said. “This would send a strong signal to Christians, a show that that they are not alone and left to their own destiny.”

Today in Kirkuk, Christians held a day of fasting. At 5 pm, they will take part in a prayer vigil, but only for Christians, to avoid being “used politically” before the 7 March election.

“The government condemned the attacks,” said Mgr Louis Sako of Kirkuk. “Muslim leaders did the same, insisting that the violence is ‘unIslamic’; however, we have become accustomed to such statements and want instead concrete actions”.

Indeed, the prelate did not mince his words. “It is shameful that in a city like Mosul, with a million people, no one has spoken out against the slaughter of Christians.”

All said, he is not without hope for the future. In this view, he said, “It is important” that all Christians be “against the Nineveh Plains plan”, even though leaders and parties have shown signs of weakness and internal divisions. “We must be united because it [the plan] is a trap.”

For the prelate, fasting, holding a joint prayer vigil, putting up flags and posters around the city are all part of this effort to stop the slaughter. They area also a sign of support for national unity, the only way to bring peace and security to the country.

“Today’s initiative is for Christians only,” Mgr Sako said, “to avoid the politicisation of the event. Until now, Muslims have been silent concerning the slaughter, but now they should ‘react’ and take concrete actions.”

For the archbishop, a power struggle is underway in the country, and “we do not want to get involved. Instead, we are fighting for peace in Iraq”.

In the capital, dozens of people demonstrated yesterday against “targeted killings”; they too called on the central government to provide security.

For Mgr Shlemon Warduni, anti-Christian attacks “are organised”. Christians are the victims of the “politicisation of the conflict” between Arabs and Kurds. “We run the risk of a holocaust,” he said. “The support and solidarity of ordinary people, even Muslims, is not enough,” he explained, if political leaders and the government do not take concrete steps.

For the auxiliary bishop of Baghdad, the Nineveh Plains plan is a non-starter. “We shall not stop . . . live or dead; this is fundamental moment.”

Tribal chiefs and ordinary people expressed their “encouragement and solidarity,” the prelate said. For them, “Iraq without Christians is worth nothing.”

For Mgr Warduni, the government, political leaders, and the media must respond to “our alarm warning”.

Meanwhile, Patriarch Emmanuel Delly is in Mosul to bring comfort to the families of the victims and to meet local authorities.

Lastly, through AsiaNews the auxiliary bishop of Baghdad thanked Benedict XVI for the appeal he made yesterday during the Angelus on behalf of Baghdad Christians. “It is encouraging to feel him so close. Philip Najim, the Vatican’s representative for Chaldean Christians in Europe, said the attacks are being organised by extremists and are aimed at driving out Christians.

"The Pope is very worried about the plight of Christians in Iraq and he has said so many times and has repeated that the rights of this community must be respected," said Najim.

"These are well organised acts by extremist groups and Islamists aimed at driving Christians out of Iraq."

His comments came as the funerals of three Christians killed in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul took place, including those of a father and son who were killed at their home.

The Bishop of Mosul, Georges Camoussa, said it was the first time such a "vile act" had been committed against Christians in their own homes.

The killings were the latest in a spate of murders of Christians ahead of Iraq’s key general election on 7 March, which is being seen as crucial test of democracy in a country wracked by sectarian strife.

It is not clear if the spike in attacks against Christians is an attempt at voter intimidation by factions involved in a violent territorial and power struggle between Kurds and Arabs in Mosul or another attempt by Al-Qaeda to derail the election.

Christians number around 250,000 to 300,000 in Nineveh province, of which Mosul is capital.

Najim called on nations to intervene to protect Christians in Iraq.

"This is important. The world is waiting for the results of the election. But if human rights and personal safety are not ensured, there can be no political progress.

"So I appeal to the international community to break its complete silence on the massacre of Christians," he said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Italy’s foreign minister Franco Frattini said a ‘manual’ will be issued in the next two months to all European Union ambassadors to give guidance on ’sensitive’ countries’ treatment of religious minorities, especially Christians.

"There is a risk of persecution. We are obliged to act, not just make declarations," Frattini told Catholic daily Avvenir

He said he was planning to hold an international conference on religious freedom in Italy "this year".

<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127040124/http://www.adnkronos.com/AKI/English/Religion/?id=3.1.51991497" class="external" fear. Fides Interviews Bishop Shlemon Warduni, Chaldean Catholic Auxiliary Bishop of Baghdad

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – "In a climate of insecurity and lawlessness in Iraq, the Christian community is suffering. To all Christians around the world we say: Do not abandon us." This is the heartfelt appeal made through Fides by Bishop Shlemon Warduni, Chaldean Auxiliary Bishop of Baghdad, recently visiting the Vatican for a meeting with Benedict XVI.

In his trip to Europe, Bishop Warduni is asking for solidarity and material support from Christian institutions for the reconstruction and renovation of churches and pastoral buildings in Baghdad, damaged by the attacks in recent months. Fides was able to ask him a few questions.

What is the current situation of the Christian community in Iraq?

Our situation sparks concern and pain. The context is well-known: for years, Iraq has been ravaged by internal and external wars that have robbed the people of peace and basic social services like health and education. The consequences of the last war and military occupation are tragic. The political instability and anarchy has generated misery and destruction. This is why many Christians – along with thousands of other citizens – have had to leave the country. We have lost about a third of our community. It is a tragedy of vast dimensions, which is witnessed by the world.

Have you noticed improvements in the last year? What do you hope from the new elections?

What has occurred is that the lack of political planning has led to the proliferation of terrorism, which today has its own agenda and destabilizes the country. Legality and security are lacking, the government is weak, and the elections (not yet established with certainty) will have to address these urgent needs, otherwise they will be useless. Meanwhile, attacks on churches and Christians continue: in the last two weeks there have been explosions in three churches in Mosul, not to mention in Baghdad, where three months ago a car bomb outside a church killed two young people and wounded 30, causing great material damage. [For us], tranquility is a small break between two attacks.

How do Iraqi Christians think and feel about the situation?

These episodes have a very negative effect on Christians. They sow fear and rob us of hope. It is not a question of "ethnic cleansing," but looking at the overall situation there is a plan that intends to hurt us. Placing ten bombs in churches on the same day has a precise intention of intimidation. The fear and discouragement that circulates in the community leads to the flight of the faithful who fear for their lives and their families, rightly so.

What does Your Excellency think of the proposal to gather all Iraqi Christians in the Nineveh Plain area?

It is absurd and senseless. It would mean reducing the Christians to a ghetto, putting them in a cage, crushing them in the conflict between Arabs and Kurds. Christ told us to proclaim the Good News to the whole world: we are called to be salt, light, and leaven for the nation. They cannot be confined to a single territory on the grounds of religion.

What do you and your people wish to request from the government?

We ask the government to identify, pursue, and prevent terrorist attacks. We seek protection. We simply want our rights. Iraq is our country, we are Iraqi citizens just like the others. We have been in Iraq since the first century AD, when St. Thomas went to preach in our land. We were in Iraq for 600 years before the Muslims. We do not demand any special treatment, only respect for our dignity, for our freedoms and fundamental rights: to live in peace, proclaim the Gospel and help build our nation.

What appeal do you make to the international community?

We ask the international community to offer stronger and more decisive aid. Strong pressures are needed from Western governments to stabilize the framework of Iraq and restore legality and safety. The governments that promote democracy and human rights, who are ready to defend their economic interests in Iraq, should also work to eradicate terrorism and promote peace and legality in Iraq.

How are you preparing to live Christmas?

Christmas will be a critical time. It is during all the major Christian festivals when attacks occur and the climate of intimidation increases. Our Catholic community is a fervent one, but people are afraid to come to church. We hope that God will grant us peace and help us to celebrate the feast of Christmas with courage.

What do ask from the Pope and from all the Christians in the world?

To support us, to not leave us to our own devices, to raise their voices to defend us in the international community. To all believers in Christ in the world, we say: pray and help the victims of violence, war, and terrorism. Remember the suffering people of Iraq, who have suffered for so many years. The Holy Father, whom I met with yesterday, has assured me of his prayers and support for Iraq and all Iraqis.
