The concept of a living-place is deeply rooted in the narrative of Scripture, reflecting both physical and spiritual dimensions. Throughout the Bible, living-places range from temporary tents to permanent structures, each carrying significant theological and cultural implications.

Old Testament

In the Old Testament, the concept of a living-place begins with the Garden of Eden, the first dwelling of humanity. Genesis 2:8 states, "And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed." This initial living-place was a divine provision, symbolizing perfect communion with God.

As humanity expanded, living-places evolved. The patriarchs, such as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, often lived in tents, reflecting their nomadic lifestyle. Genesis 12:8 describes Abraham's journey: "From there Abram moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east." The tent symbolized a temporary dwelling, pointing to the transient nature of life and the anticipation of a promised land.

The Israelites' journey from Egypt to the Promised Land further illustrates the significance of living-places. The Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary, served as God's dwelling among His people during their wilderness wanderings. Exodus 25:8 records God's command: "And they are to make a sanctuary for Me, so that I may dwell among them." The Tabernacle was a sacred living-place, emphasizing God's presence and guidance.

Upon entering Canaan, the Israelites transitioned to more permanent living-places. The construction of the Temple in Jerusalem under Solomon marked a pivotal moment. 1 Kings 6:1 notes, "In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the house of the LORD." The Temple became the central place of worship and symbolized God's enduring presence with His people.

New Testament

In the New Testament, the concept of a living-place takes on a spiritual dimension. Jesus Christ, during His earthly ministry, had no permanent home, as noted in Matthew 8:20 : "Jesus replied, 'Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.'" This highlights the transient nature of His mission and the call for His followers to prioritize spiritual over material concerns.

The early Christian community often met in homes, which became living-places for worship and fellowship. Acts 2:46 describes the early believers: "With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart." These home gatherings reflect the intimate and communal nature of the early Church.

Theologically, the New Testament introduces the concept of believers as the living-place of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19 states, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own." This profound truth emphasizes the indwelling presence of God within each believer, transforming them into a spiritual living-place.

Eschatological Perspective

The Bible concludes with a vision of the ultimate living-place in the book of Revelation. Revelation 21:3 declares, "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.'" This eschatological promise points to the New Jerusalem, where God and His people will dwell together eternally, fulfilling the divine purpose of creation and redemption.
Strong's Hebrew
2333. chavvah -- a tent village
... small town.
