and they covered<MH3680> him with garments<MH899b>, but he could not keep<MH2552> warm<MH2552>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>So his servants<MH5650> said<MH559> to him, “Have them search<MH1245> for a young<MH5291> virgin<MH1330> for my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, and have her <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>attend<MH5975, 6440> the king<MH4428> and become<MH1961> his nurse<MH5532a>; and have her lie<MH7901> on your chest<MH2436>, so that my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> may keep<MH2552> warm<MH2552>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So they searched<MH1245> for a beautiful<MH3303> girl<MH5291> throughout<MH3605> the territory<MH1366> of Israel<MH3478>, and found<MH4672> Abishag<MH49> the Shunammite<MH7767>, and brought<MH935> her to the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>The girl<MH5291> was very<MH3966> beautiful<MH3303>; and she became<MH1961> the king’s<MH4428> nurse<MH5532a> and served<MH8334> him, but the king<MH4428> did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>become<MH3045> intimate<MH3045> with her. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Now Adonijah<MH138> the son<MH1121> of Haggith<MH2294> exalted<MH5375> himself, saying<MH559>, “I will be<MH4427a> king<MH4427a>.” So he prepared<MH6213a> for himself chariots<MH7393> and horsemen<MH6571b>, with fifty<MH2572> men<MH376> to run<MH7323> before<MH6440> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And his father<MH1> had never<MH3808> rebuked<MH6087a> him at any<MH4480> time<MH3117> by asking<MH559>, “Why<MH4069> have you done<MH6213a> so<MH3602>?” And he was also<MH1571> a very<MH3966> handsome<MH2896a, 8389> man, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>he was born<MH3205> after<MH310> Absalom<MH53>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>he had conferred<MH1697, 1961> with Joab<MH3097> the son<MH1121> of Zeruiah<MH6870> and with Abiathar<MH54> the priest<MH3548>; and they allied<MH5826, 310> themselves with Adonijah<MH138>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But Zadok<MH6659> the priest<MH3548>, Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077>, Nathan<MH5416> the prophet<MH5030>, Shimei<MH8096>, Rei<MH7472>, and the mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368> who<MH834> belonged to David<MH1732>, were not with Adonijah<MH138>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Adonijah<MH138> sacrificed<MH2076> sheep<MH6629>, oxen<MH1241>, and fattened<MH4806> steers<MH4806> by the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>stone<MH68> of Zoheleth<MH2120>, which<MH834> is beside<MH681a> En-rogel<MH5883>; and he invited<MH7121> all<MH3605> his brothers<MH251>, the king’s<MH4428> sons<MH1121>, and all<MH3605> the men<MH376> of Judah<MH3063>, the king’s<MH4428> servants<MH5650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But he did not invite<MH7121> Nathan<MH5416> the prophet<MH5030>, Benaiah<MH1141>, the mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368>, or his brother<MH251> Solomon<MH8010>. <p class="hdg">Nathan and Bathsheba</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Nathan<MH5416> spoke<MH559> to Bathsheba<MH1339> the mother<MH517> of Solomon<MH8010>, saying<MH559>, “Have you not heard<MH8085> that Adonijah<MH138> the son<MH1121> of Haggith<MH2294> has become<MH4427a> king<MH4427a>, and David<MH1732> our lord<MH113> does not know<MH3045> <i>it?</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So now<MH6258> come<MH1980>, please<MH4994> let me give<MH3289> you advice<MH6098>, and save<MH4422> your life<MH5315> and the life<MH5315> of your son<MH1121> Solomon<MH8010>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Go<MH1980> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>at once<MH935> to King<MH4428> David<MH1732> and say<MH559> to him, ‘Have you not, my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, sworn<MH7650> to your servant<MH519>, saying<MH559>, “Solomon<MH8010> your son<MH1121> certainly<MH3588> shall be<MH4427a> king<MH4427a> after<MH310> me, and he shall sit<MH3427> on my throne<MH3678>”? Why<MH4069> then has Adonijah<MH138> become<MH4427a> king<MH4427a>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, while you are still<MH5750> there<MH8033> speaking<MH1696> with the king<MH4428>, I will come<MH935> in<MH935> after<MH310> you and confirm<MH4390> your words<MH1697>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So Bathsheba<MH1339> entered<MH935> to the king<MH4428> in the bedroom<MH2315>. Now the king<MH4428> was<MH2204> very<MH3966> old<MH2204>, and Abishag<MH49> the Shunammite<MH7767> was serving<MH8334> the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then Bathsheba<MH1339> bowed<MH6915> and prostrated<MH2331c> herself <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>before the king<MH4428>. And the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, “What<MH4100> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>is on your mind?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So she said<MH559> to him, “My lord<MH113>, you yourself<MH859> swore<MH7650> to your servant<MH519> by the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>, <i>saying,</i> ‘Your son<MH1121> Solomon<MH8010> certainly<MH3588> shall be<MH4427a> king<MH4427a> after<MH310> me, and he shall sit<MH3427> on my throne<MH3678>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But now<MH6258>, behold<MH2009>, Adonijah<MH138> is<MH4427a> king<MH4427a>; and now<MH6258>, my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, you do not know<MH3045> <i>it.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>He has sacrificed<MH2076> oxen<MH7794> and fattened<MH4806> steers<MH4806> and sheep<MH6629> in abundance<MH7230>, and has invited<MH7121> all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of the king<MH4428>, Abiathar<MH54> the priest<MH3548>, and Joab<MH3097> the commander<MH8269> of the army<MH6635>, but he has not invited<MH7121> Solomon<MH8010> your servant<MH5650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And as for you, my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, the eyes<MH5869> of all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> are upon you, to announce<MH5046> to them who<MH4310> shall sit<MH3427> on the throne<MH3678> of my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> after<MH310> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Otherwise it will come<MH1961> about<MH1961>, as soon as my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>lies<MH7901> down<MH7901> with his fathers<MH1>, that I and my son<MH1121> Solomon<MH8010> will be <i>considered</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>offenders<MH2400>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And behold<MH2009>, while she was still<MH5750> speaking<MH1696> with the king<MH4428>, Nathan<MH5416> the prophet<MH5030> came<MH935> in<MH935>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>They informed<MH5046> the king<MH4428>, saying<MH559>, “Nathan<MH5416> the prophet<MH5030> is here<MH2009>.” And when he came<MH935> into the king’s presence<MH6440>, he prostrated<MH2331c> himself <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>before the king<MH4428> with his face<MH639> to the ground<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then Nathan<MH5416> said<MH559>, “My lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, have you yourself<MH859> said<MH559>, ‘Adonijah<MH138> shall be<MH4427a> king<MH4427a> after<MH310> me, and he shall sit<MH3427> on my throne<MH3678>’? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>For he has gone<MH3381> down<MH3381> today<MH3117> and has sacrificed<MH2076> oxen<MH7794> and fattened<MH4806> steers<MH4806> and sheep<MH6629> in abundance<MH7230>, and has invited<MH7121> all<MH3605> the king’s<MH4428> sons<MH1121>, the commanders<MH8269> of the army<MH6635>, and Abiathar<MH54> the priest<MH3548>, and behold<MH2009>, they are eating<MH398> and drinking<MH8354> in his presence<MH6440>; and they say<MH559>, ‘<i>Long</i> live<MH2421a> King<MH4428> Adonijah<MH138>!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But me, <i>even</i> me your servant<MH5650>, Zadok<MH6659> the priest<MH3548>, Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077>, and your servant<MH5650> Solomon<MH8010>, he has not invited<MH7121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Has this<MH2088> thing<MH1697> been<MH1961> done<MH1961> by my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, and you have not let your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>servants<MH5650> know<MH3045> who<MH4310> shall sit<MH3427> on the throne<MH3678> of my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> after<MH310> him?” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then King<MH4428> David<MH1732> responded<MH6030a> and said<MH559>, “Summon<MH7121> Bathsheba<MH1339> to me.” And she came<MH935> into the king’s<MH4428> presence<MH6440> and stood<MH5975> before<MH6440> the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> vowed<MH7650> and said<MH559>, “As the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, who<MH834> has redeemed<MH6299> my life<MH5315> from all<MH3605> distress<MH6869a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>certainly<MH3588> as I vowed<MH7650> to you by the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, saying<MH559>, ‘Your son<MH1121> Solomon<MH8010> certainly<MH3588> shall be<MH4427a> king<MH4427a> after<MH310> me, and he shall sit<MH3427> on my throne<MH3678> in<MH8478> my place<MH8478>’; I will indeed<MH3588> do<MH6213a> so<MH3651> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then Bathsheba<MH1339> bowed<MH6915> with her face<MH639> to the ground<MH776>, and prostrated<MH2331c> herself before the king<MH4428> and said<MH559>, “May my lord<MH113> King<MH4428> David<MH1732> live<MH2421a> forever<MH5769>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Then King<MH4428> David<MH1732> said<MH559>, “Summon<MH7121> to me Zadok<MH6659> the priest<MH3548>, Nathan<MH5416> the prophet<MH5030>, and Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077>.” And they came<MH935> into the king’s<MH4428> presence<MH6440>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to them, “Take<MH3947> with you the servants<MH5650> of your lord<MH113>, and have my son<MH1121> Solomon<MH8010> ride<MH7392> on my own mule<MH6506>, and bring<MH3381> him down<MH3381> to Gihon<MH1521>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And have Zadok<MH6659> the priest<MH3548> and Nathan<MH5416> the prophet<MH5030> anoint<MH4886> him there<MH8033> as king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>, and blow<MH8628> the trumpet<MH7782> and say<MH559>, ‘<i>Long</i> live<MH2421a> King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010>!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Then you shall come<MH5927> up<MH5927> after<MH310> him, and he shall come<MH935> and sit<MH3427> on my throne<MH3678>, and he shall be<MH4427a> king<MH4427a> in<MH8478> my place<MH8478>; for I have appointed<MH6680> him to be ruler<MH5057> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478> and Judah<MH3063>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077> answered<MH6030a> the king<MH4428> and said<MH559>, “Amen<MH543>! May the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, say<MH559> the same<MH3651>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> the LORD<MH3068> has been<MH1961> with my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, so<MH3651> may He be with Solomon<MH8010>, and make<MH1431> his throne<MH3678> greater<MH1431> than<MH4480> the throne<MH3678> of my lord<MH113> King<MH4428> David<MH1732>!” <p class="hdg">Solomon Anointed King</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>So Zadok<MH6659> the priest<MH3548>, Nathan<MH5416> the prophet<MH5030>, Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077>, the Cherethites<MH3774>, and the Pelethites<MH6432> went<MH3381> down<MH3381> and had Solomon<MH8010> ride<MH7392> on King<MH4428> David’s<MH1732> mule<MH6506>, and brought<MH1980> him to Gihon<MH1521>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And Zadok<MH6659> the priest<MH3548> then took<MH3947> the horn<MH7161> of oil<MH8081> from the tent<MH168> and anointed<MH4886> Solomon<MH8010>. Then they blew<MH8628> the trumpet<MH7782>, and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> said<MH559>, “<i>Long</i> live<MH2421a> King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> after<MH310> him, and the people<MH5971a> were playing<MH2490b> on flutes<MH2485> and rejoicing<MH8056> with great<MH1419> joy<MH8057>, so that the earth<MH776> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>shook<MH1234> at their noise<MH6963>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Now Adonijah<MH138> and all<MH3605> the guests<MH7121> who<MH834> <i>were</i> with him heard<MH8085> <i>this</i> as they finished<MH3615> eating<MH398>. When Joab<MH3097> heard<MH8085> the sound<MH6963> of the trumpet<MH7782>, he said<MH559>, “Why<MH4069> is the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>city<MH7151> making<MH1993> such an<MH1993> uproar<MH1993>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>While he was still<MH5750> speaking<MH1696>, behold<MH2009>, Jonathan<MH3083> the son<MH1121> of Abiathar<MH54> the priest<MH3548> came<MH935>. Then Adonijah<MH138> said<MH559>, “Come<MH935> in<MH935>, for you are a valiant<MH2428> man<MH376> and you bring<MH1319> good<MH2896b> news<MH1319>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>But Jonathan<MH3083> replied<MH6030a> to Adonijah<MH138>, “On the contrary<MH61>! Our lord<MH113> King<MH4428> David<MH1732> has made<MH4427a> Solomon<MH8010> king<MH4428>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>The king<MH4428> has also sent<MH7971> with him Zadok<MH6659> the priest<MH3548>, Nathan<MH5416> the prophet<MH5030>, Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077>, the Cherethites<MH3774>, and the Pelethites<MH6432>; and they have mounted<MH7392> him on the king’s<MH4428> mule<MH6506>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>Furthermore, Zadok<MH6659> the priest<MH3548> and Nathan<MH5416> the prophet<MH5030> have anointed<MH4886> him king<MH4428> in Gihon<MH1521>, and they have come<MH5927> up<MH5927> from there<MH8033> rejoicing<MH8056>, so that the city<MH7151> is going<MH1949> wild<MH1949>. This<MH1931> is the noise<MH6963> which<MH834> you have heard<MH8085>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>Besides<MH1571>, Solomon<MH8010> has even<MH1571> taken<MH3427> his seat<MH3427> on the throne<MH3678> of the kingdom<MH4410>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Moreover<MH1571>, the king’s<MH4428> servants<MH5650> came<MH935> to bless<MH1288> our lord<MH113> King<MH4428> David<MH1732>, saying<MH559>, ‘May your God<MH430> make<MH3190> the name<MH8034> of Solomon<MH8010> better<MH3190> than<MH4480> your name<MH8034>, and his throne<MH3678> greater<MH1431> than<MH4480> your throne<MH3678>!’ And the king<MH4428> bowed<MH2331c> himself on the bed<MH4904>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>The king<MH4428> has also<MH1571> said<MH559> this<MH3602>: ‘Blessed<MH1288> be the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, who<MH834> has granted<MH5414> one to sit<MH3427> on my throne<MH3678> today<MH3117> while my own eyes<MH5869> see<MH7200> <i>it.</i>’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the guests<MH7121> of Adonijah<MH138> trembled<MH2729> and got<MH6965> up<MH6965>, and each<MH376> went<MH1980> on his way<MH1870>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>Adonijah<MH138> also was<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> of Solomon<MH8010>, and he got<MH6965> up<MH6965>, and went<MH1980>, and took<MH2388> hold<MH2388> of the horns<MH7161> of the altar<MH4196>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>Now it was reported<MH5046> to Solomon<MH8010>, saying<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, Adonijah<MH138> is<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> of King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010>, for behold<MH2009>, he has taken<MH270> hold<MH270> of the horns<MH7161> of the altar<MH4196>, saying<MH559>, ‘May King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010> swear<MH7650> to me today<MH3117> that he will not put<MH4191> his servant<MH5650> to<MH4191> death<MH4191> with the sword<MH2719>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>And Solomon<MH8010> said<MH559>, “If<MH518> he is a worthy<MH2428> man<MH1121>, not one of his hairs<MH8185> will fall<MH5307> to the ground<MH776>; but if<MH518> wickedness<MH7463a> is found<MH4672> in him, he will die<MH4191>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/1-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>So King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010> sent<MH7971> <i>men,</i> and they brought<MH3381> him down<MH3381> from the altar<MH4196>.
