Cherubim are often associated with the presence and holiness of God, as seen in Genesis 3:24, where they guard the way to the Tree of Life, and in Exodus 25:18-22, where they are part of the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant. Their presence in the temple signifies divine protection and the sacredness of the space. Palm trees, on the other hand, are symbols of victory and righteousness (Psalm 92:12). The alternating pattern suggests a harmonious blend of divine guardianship and the flourishing life that comes from God's presence. This design reflects the heavenly reality and the ideal order of creation, pointing to the ultimate restoration and peace in God's kingdom.
Each cherub had two faces:
The two-faced cherubim are unique to Ezekiel's vision and differ from the four-faced cherubim described earlier in Ezekiel 1:10. This specific depiction may symbolize the dual aspects of God's nature or the dual roles of the cherubim as both protectors and worshippers. The faces could represent different attributes or roles, such as judgment and mercy, or the connection between heaven and earth. This imagery also foreshadows the dual nature of Christ, who embodies both divinity and humanity. The cherubim's faces serve as a reminder of the complexity and mystery of God's presence and the multifaceted nature of His interaction with creation.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Ezekiel
A prophet and priest during the Babylonian exile, Ezekiel is the author of the book. Each cherub had two of its four faces exhibited (since four could not be conveniently represented on a plain surface) - a man's face (symbolizing the rational creation) directed towards the palm tree on one side, and a young lion's face (symbolizing the irrational creation) turned towards the palm tree on the other side. This particular style of ornamentation was employed from the ground unto above the door, which Plumptre interprets as an indication of the height of the palm trees and cherubic figures, but which probably meant the same thing as the preceding clause, "through- all the house round about."
