So he went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to Joppa<MH3305>, found<MH4672> a ship<MH591> that was going<MH935> to Tarshish<MH8659>, paid<MH5414> the fare<MH7939>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>boarded<MH3381> it to go<MH935> with them to Tarshish<MH8659> away<MH4480> from the presence<MH6440> of the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jonah/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>However, the LORD<MH3068> hurled<MH2904> a great<MH1419> wind<MH7307> on the sea<MH3220> and there was a great<MH1419> storm<MH5591a> on the sea<MH3220>, so that the ship<MH591> was<MH2803> about<MH2803> to<MH2803> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>break<MH7665> up<MH7665>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jonah/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then the sailors<MH4419> became<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> and every<MH376> man<MH376> cried<MH2199> out<MH2199> to his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>god<MH430>, and they hurled<MH2904> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>cargo<MH3627> which<MH834> was in the ship<MH591> into the sea<MH3220> to lighten<MH7043> <i>it</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>for them. But Jonah<MH3124> had gone<MH3381> below<MH3381> into the stern<MH3411> of the ship<MH5600>, had lain<MH7901> down<MH7901>, and fallen<MH7290a> sound<MH7290a> asleep<MH7290a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jonah/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So the captain<MH7227b, 2259> approached<MH7126> him and said<MH559>, “How<MH4100> is it that you are sleeping<MH7290a>? Get<MH6965> up<MH6965>, call<MH7121> on your god<MH430>! Perhaps<MH194> <i>your</i> god<MH430> will be concerned<MH6245b> about us so that we will not perish<MH6>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jonah/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And each<MH376> man<MH376> said<MH559> to his mate<MH7453>, “Come<MH1980>, let’s cast<MH5307> lots<MH1486> so that we may <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>find<MH3045> out<MH3045> on whose<MH4310> account<MH7945> this<MH2088> catastrophe<MH7463a> <i>has struck</i> us.” So they cast<MH5307> lots<MH1486>, and the lot<MH1486> fell<MH5307> on Jonah<MH3124>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jonah/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then they said<MH559> to him, “Tell<MH5046> us, now<MH4994>! On whose<MH4310> account <i>has</i> this<MH2088> catastrophe<MH7463a> <i>struck</i> us? What<MH4100> is your occupation<MH4399>, and where<MH370> do you come<MH935> from? What<MH4100> is your country<MH776>, and from what<MH335, 2088> people<MH5971a> are you?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/jonah/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So he said<MH559> to them, “I am a Hebrew<MH5680>, and I fear<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of heaven<MH8064> who<MH834> made<MH6213a> the sea<MH3220> and the dry<MH3004> land<MH3004>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jonah/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then the men<MH376> became<MH3372a> extremely<MH3374, 1419> afraid<MH3372a>, and they said<MH559> to him, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>How<MH4100> could you do<MH6213a> this<MH2088>?” For the men<MH376> knew<MH3045> that he was fleeing<MH1272> from the presence<MH6440> of the LORD<MH3068>, because<MH3588> he had told<MH5046> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jonah/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So they said<MH559> to him, “What<MH4100> should we do<MH6213a> to you so that the sea<MH3220> will become<MH8367> calm<MH8367> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>for us?”—for the sea<MH3220> was becoming<MH1980> increasingly<MH1980> stormy<MH5590>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jonah/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to them, “Pick<MH5375> me up<MH5375> and hurl<MH2904> me into the sea<MH3220>.
