recently transitioned from his role as Vice President of Corporate Marketing at AAR Corp to join Vallair as Group Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer. Known throughout the aerospace industry for his strategic vision and impactful leadership, Parant brings over 20 years of experience spanning MRO, parts trading, and aircraft and engine leasing.</p><p>Pascal Parant shares his insights on the evolving MRO industry from overcoming skilled labor shortages and supply chain disruptions to embracing cutting-edge technologies. </p><p>With an innovative approach that combines advanced technology with strategic training, Vallair not only addresses the current “perfect storm” of challenges in MRO but also creates new opportunities for sustainable growth. Parant’s experience in both North American and European markets gives him a unique perspective on the industry.</p><p><strong>1Q – From AAR to Vallair, can you very briefly share your journey, your overall experience of the industry, the lessons you learned</strong> <strong>along the way</strong>,<strong> etc?</strong></p><p><strong>Ans:</strong> I have always been fascinated by and passionate about aeronautics. Ever since I can remember as a child, most of my toys were aircraft and helicopters. I wasn’t slim, and I wore glasses at a time when that disqualified me from becoming a pilot.  If I couldn’t fly them, I decided I would build them. So I became an engineer, graduating from ESTACA in Paris. However, this didn’t stop me from becoming a private pilot, logging 860 flight hours.</p><p>One of the figures who influenced my life and career was the aircraft engineer character, Joe Patroni, played by George Kennedy in the ‘Airport’ movie series, and so I became increasingly interested in aircraft maintenance.</p><p>In my first job, I was introduced to the world of brokerage. I expanded the business of SERAI, then the oldest French brokerage, to include aircraft and engine trading, which was an exciting three-year period. Later, I crossed paths with Pat Aherne from AAR Group, who spent six months convincing me to join. I started as a sales manager at Aircraft Turbine Center, later moving into aircraft and engine sales and leasing, and then corporate marketing, where I spent nearly 26 years. I was fortunate to work with inspiring mentors, leaders, and colleagues and gain hands-on experience in every area of the business – MRO, parts trading, airline sales, leasing, and more – giving me a holistic view of the aviation ecosystem.</p><p>Between my time at SERAI and AAR, I experienced seven or more economic cycles. Each crisis was unique, from the Gulf War and Asian Crisis (financial and H5N1) to 9/11, the subprime crisis, and, more recently, SARS. Navigating these cycles taught me that market patterns repeat: every engine type has rebounded impressively in value, as have many aircraft. Patience and resilience are crucial.</p><p>Experience has shown me that 90% to 95% of the time, we can find solutions by learning from past crises, with innovative solutions needed in only 5% to 10% of cases. In our industry, we must avoid overreacting, analyze situations calmly, and look to the past for guidance. This approach serves us well.</p><p>Beyond that, understanding the market, anticipating changes, staying close to innovation, and avoiding the ‘bubble’ traps are key lessons. Building strong relationships with customers, communicating, meeting new clients, and always expanding the prospect base has been central to my approach.</p><p>Finally, it’s essential to be authentic, embrace one’s individuality, and use it to make a difference. My ‘little’ extra weight has always been an asset.</p><p><strong>2Q –Can you throw some light on the current supply chain issue in the industry, lack of spares leading to aircraft grounding, and Vallair’s plan of action?</strong></p><p><strong>Ans: </strong>We are in a perfect storm. The war in Ukraine has led to shortages of critical raw materials like titanium. Compounding this is the processing challenge, with a significant portion of this industry in Russia. Furthermore, the capacity for forging and casting is limited. Airbus and Safran acquired Aubert & Duval to secure capacity, and other OEMs have bought struggling tier-three suppliers. Additionally, we have faced a wave of retirements of skilled workers, many of whom left the industry during COVID-19, creating a knowledge gap in the current ramp-up.</p><p>In Europe, someone can become a first officer on an A320 within 18 months at a cost of €150k, but training a mechanic takes years: three years of schooling, plus two years of supervised training to get APRS and another two years to reach full competence. These factors will lead to a shortage of 700,000 technicians in the coming years, alongside the need for skilled workers to manufacture aircraft and components.</p><p>Supply chains are also strained by issues with connectors and bearings, especially in the U.S., where sovereignty concerns add further complications.</p><p>Lastly, family-owned businesses, essential to the supply chain, are being asked to increase production but struggle with the investment required, especially given uncertainties about OEM support. The Boeing crisis and recent strikes illustrate this: small companies were urged to invest heavily, only to be asked to cut back or halt production due to downstream issues, all while still having to manage debt. Some of them are now reluctant to continue in the industry creating additional shortages.</p><p>This is the big picture, but you can add the new engine issues, MRO needs, and capacity demands for parts. The MRO sector faces longer turnaround times, part shortages, and a skilled labor gap.</p><p>This ‘perfect storm’ illustrates why the supply chain is so strained. However, it also opens up new opportunities for Used Serviceable Material (USM) and MRO – what I’d call a golden opportunity, provided we have access to skilled labor. Vallair is well-positioned, with an integrated model that includes a training school producing 50 technicians each year who will become tomorrow’s experts.</p><p><strong>3Q – Can you tell our readers how the aircraft teardown market has evolved over the last decade and its future?</strong></p><p><strong>Ans: </strong>Due to the shortage of new aircraft, retirement rates have been at their lowest over the past year, creating an interesting scenario. On the one hand, we need USM to support operations, but on the other, there are fewer aircraft available for teardown due to high demand. This benefits the MRO business but creates challenges for teardown. However, demand is so strong that anyone with teardown capacity has a high chance of securing a deal.</p><p>It’s important to note that environmental regulations around aircraft teardown are rightly becoming stricter. The last owner is responsible for waste, making responsible teardown practices, such as those offered by Vallair in Châteauroux, essential.</p><p><strong>4Q – Several spare warehouses are springing all over to mitigate the AOG risks – Your views?</strong></p><p><strong>Ans: </strong>EU261 is creating pressure for European airlines to resolve technical issues quickly. Meeting this demand is critical in aviation, a market uniquely affected by these regulations, unlike other transport sectors like rail, bus, or maritime.</p><p>Strategically located spare parts warehouses in Europe (and globally) are essential for timely problem-solving in the interests of security and safety.</p><p><strong>5Q – Can you give an example of the latest technology adoption by Vallair to increase the life of spares, engines or components?</strong></p><p><strong>Ans: </strong>The entire industry is undergoing a major transformation with AI’s integration into aeronautics. Aircraft generate more and more data, and AI can accelerate data analysis to predict part failures, enabling proactive replacements and significant cost savings, especially in ACM, engines, and APUs. Preventive maintenance -replacing a part before it fails – can save millions in repair costs.</p><p>At Vallair, we closely follow these technological advancements to ensure we make informed decisions and select the best repair options for each part.</p><p><strong>6Q – The MRO industry is constantly evolving. Can you tell us how you keep your staff abreast with all the technological advancements applicable in day-to-day activities?</strong></p><p><strong>Ans: </strong>We’re in a dynamic period, with numerous technological innovations like drone inspections, augmented reality, paperless solutions, and AI. Vallair’s experts are keeping an eye on these developments to remain at the forefront of MRO technology.</p><p>We also use AI to streamline job card creation, reducing this process from six days to just two hours. Human expertise is still crucial to interpret AI-generated insights, but this technology allows us to work more efficiently.</p><p>Like doctors, it’s essential to provide our workforce with regular training to stay competitive in this labor-intensive and highly competitive industry.</p><p>And we must ensure that the industry’s motto, “Quality First, Safety Always” remains embedded in our MRO work culture.</p><p><strong>7Q – Your views on the current AME (aircraft maintenance engineer) shortage across the globe?<br></strong><br><strong>Ans: </strong>The primary shortage isn’t necessarily engineers but qualified technicians. As mentioned, we’re facing a global shortage of almost 700,000 skilled workers over the next few years to maintain and build aircraft. However training a qualified technician takes time – three years of schooling and an additional two years to reach full autonomy. This shortage is worldwide. In a globalized economy, countries with higher labor costs attract skilled workers from lower-cost regions, and skilled labor mobility is increasingly common. However, this is only a short-term solution. The long-term solution is what Vallair is doing: we’ve established an aviation technician school in Châteauroux and continue to invest in education. We need to restore the reputation of skilled trades and inspire the next generation to pursue careers in mechanics and aeronautics.</p><p>Unfortunately, we’ve lost a generation due to negative perceptions of the airline industry, despite the fact that young people are traveling and flying more than previous generations. I strongly believe that we need to instill a passion for aeronautics at a young age. Aircraft toys, films – every medium can help. Movies like ‘Airport’ sparked my own love for aviation. Many aviators, mechanics, and engineers continue to be inspired by film series like Top Gun.  Call it propaganda if you like, but I see it as an initiation into a wonderful industry.</p><p>When it comes to engineers, we’re also lacking skilled ones – not because there aren’t enough graduates, but because of the lack of new programmes. We’re witnessing the challenges Boeing faces in certifying its latest aircraft. The learning curve in developing new programmes is steep and needs to be maintained within each OEM. If there’s a gap between generations and knowledge isn’t passed on, that expertise is lost. This applies to aircraft, engines, flight controls, and computing systems. I’m rather concerned about the absence of entirely new programmes.</p><p><strong>8Q – What specific strategies do you plan to implement to strengthen Vallair’s operational capabilities in the MRO sector?<br></strong><br><strong>Ans: </strong>To strengthen Vallair’s operational capabilities in the MRO sector, we plan to:</p><p>              1.           Cultivate a desirable work environment that encourages our team members to build long-term careers with us and focus on training new technicians.</p><p>              2.           Expand our current capacities in both Montpellier and Châteauroux, adding new aircraft types to our repair capabilities: this includes construction of one additional bay in Montpellier dedicated to narrowbodies and one widebody hangar in Châteauroux dedicated to A350.</p><p>              3.           Enhance niche repair markets – such as nacelles, and develop modular engine shops complemented by teardown capabilities. This allows our other shops to focus on higher-tech, more capital-intensive stages of engine MRO.</p><p>              4.           Continue integrating the latest technologies into our MRO operations to stay at the cutting edge.</p><p>              5.           Finally, we plan to reserve last-minute slots to accommodate urgent requests from our longstanding lessor clients as well as airlines in need of immediate MRO services.</p><p>This should provide a clear view of our strategic plan to strengthen our operational capabilities.</p><p><strong>9Q – Can you share any of the most challenging experience in your career so far and how you tackle it?</strong></p><p><strong>Ans: </strong>The most challenging experience in my career was a recent one. After 26 remarkable years at AAR, with a great CEO, John Holmes, and a fulfilling job, I had the opportunity to join another exceptional company with a visionary leader, Grégoire Lebigot, whom I admire for his work with Vallair. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join Vallair at a pivotal time in its growth, bringing my network, experience, and expertise.</p><p>This was the hardest decision of my career. Leaving a company you love is always difficult, but I’m excited to join Vallair and help lead its next chapter. As Grégoire often says, AAR is his model, and in many ways, Vallair is a ‘small European AAR’.  I look forward to helping the business grow and there is minimal competition between the two, with AAR’s
