And the two<MH8147> sons<MH1121> of Eli<MH5941>, Hophni<MH2652> and Phinehas<MH6372>, were priests<MH3548> to the LORD<MH3068> there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>When the day<MH3117> came<MH1961> that Elkanah<MH511> sacrificed<MH2076>, he would give<MH5414> portions<MH4490> to his wife<MH802> Peninnah<MH6444> and to all<MH3605> her sons<MH1121> and daughters<MH1323>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>but to Hannah<MH2584> he would give<MH5414> a double<MH639> portion<MH4490>, because<MH3588> he loved<MH157> Hannah<MH2584>, but the LORD<MH3068> had closed<MH5462> her womb<MH7358>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Her rival<MH6869b>, moreover, would provoke<MH3707> her bitterly<MH1571, 3708a> to irritate<MH7481> her, because<MH3588> the LORD<MH3068> had closed<MH5462, 1157> her womb<MH7358>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And it happened<MH6213a> year<MH8141> after year<MH8141>, as often<MH1767> as she went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, that she would provoke<MH3707> her; so she wept<MH1058> and would not eat<MH398>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then Elkanah<MH511> her husband<MH376> would say<MH559> to her, &#8220;Hannah<MH2584>, why<MH4100> do you weep<MH1058>, and why<MH4100> do you not eat<MH398>, and why<MH4100> is<MH7489a> your heart<MH3824> sad<MH7489a>? Am I not better<MH2896a> to you than<MH4480> ten<MH6235> sons<MH1121>?&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then Hannah<MH2584> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> after<MH310> eating<MH398> and drinking<MH8354> in Shiloh<MH7887>. Now Eli<MH5941> the priest<MH3548> was sitting<MH3427> on the seat<MH3678> by the doorpost<MH4201> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>temple<MH1964> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>She, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>greatly<MH4751> distressed<MH4751>, prayed<MH6419> to the LORD<MH3068> and wept<MH1058> bitterly<MH1058>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And she made<MH5087> a vow<MH5088> and said<MH559>, &#8220;LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>, if<MH518> You will indeed<MH7200> look<MH7200> on the affliction<MH6040a> of Your bond-servant<MH519> and remember<MH2142> me, and not forget<MH7911> Your bond-servant<MH519>, but will give<MH5414> Your bond-servant<MH519> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>son<MH2233, 376>, then I will give<MH5414> him to the LORD<MH3068> all<MH3605> the days<MH3117> of his life<MH2425b>, and a razor<MH4177a> shall never<MH3808> come<MH5927> on his head<MH7218>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, as she <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>continued<MH7235a> praying<MH6419> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>, that Eli<MH5941> was watching<MH8104> her mouth<MH6310>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>As for Hannah<MH2584>, she was speaking<MH1696> in her heart<MH3820>, only<MH7534b> her lips<MH8193> were quivering<MH5128>, but her voice<MH6963> was not heard<MH8085>. So Eli<MH5941> thought<MH2803> that she was drunk<MH7910>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then Eli<MH5941> said<MH559> to her, &#8220;How<MH4970> long<MH5704, 4970> will you behave<MH7937> like<MH7937> a<MH7937> drunk<MH7937>? Get<MH5493> rid<MH5493> of your wine<MH3196>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But Hannah<MH2584> answered<MH6030a> and said<MH559>, &#8220;No<MH369>, my lord<MH113>, I am a woman<MH802> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>despairing<MH7186> in spirit<MH7307>; I have drunk<MH8354> neither<MH3808> wine<MH3196> nor<MH3808> strong<MH7941> drink<MH7941>, but I have poured<MH8210> out<MH8210> my soul<MH5315> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Do not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>consider<MH5414> your bond-servant<MH519> a useless<MH1100> woman<MH1323>, for I have spoken<MH1696> until<MH5704> now<MH2008> out of my great<MH7230> concern<MH7879> and provocation<MH3708a>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then Eli<MH5941> answered<MH6030a> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Go<MH1980> in peace<MH7965>; and may the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> grant<MH5414> your request<MH7596> that you have asked<MH7592> of Him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>She said<MH559>, &#8220;Let your bond-servant<MH8198> find<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in your sight<MH5869>.&#8221; So the woman<MH802> went<MH1980> on her way<MH1870> and ate<MH398>, and her face<MH6440> was no<MH3808> longer<MH5750> <i>sad.</i> <p class="hdg">Samuel Is Born to Hannah</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then they got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242> and worshiped<MH2331c> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>, and returned<MH7725, 935> again<MH7725> to their house<MH1004> in Ramah<MH7414>. And Elkanah<MH511> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>had<MH3045> relations<MH3045> with Hannah<MH2584> his wife<MH802>, and the LORD<MH3068> remembered<MH2142> her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>It came<MH1961> about<MH1961> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>in due<MH8622> time<MH3117>, after Hannah<MH2584> had conceived<MH2029>, that she gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a son<MH1121>; and she named<MH7121, 8034> him Samuel<MH8050>, <i>saying,</i> &#8220;Because<MH3588> I have asked<MH7592> for him of the LORD<MH3068>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then the man<MH376> Elkanah<MH511> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> with all<MH3605> his household<MH1004> to offer<MH2076> to the LORD<MH3068> the yearly<MH3117> sacrifice<MH2077> and <i>to pay</i> his vow<MH5088>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But Hannah<MH2584> did not go<MH5927> up<MH5927>, for she said<MH559> to her husband<MH376>, &#8220;<i>I will not go</i> until<MH5704> the child<MH5288> is weaned<MH1580>; then I will bring<MH935> him, so that he may appear<MH7200> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068> and stay<MH3427> there<MH8033> for life<MH5769>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Elkanah<MH511> her husband<MH376> said<MH559> to her, &#8220;Do<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>what<MH2896a> seems best<MH2896a> to you. Stay<MH3427> until<MH5704> you have weaned<MH1580> him; only<MH389> may the LORD<MH3068> confirm<MH6965> His word<MH1697>.&#8221; So the woman<MH802> stayed<MH3427> and nursed<MH3243> her son<MH1121> until<MH5704> she weaned<MH1580> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now when<MH3512c> she had weaned<MH1580> him, she took<MH5927> him up<MH5927> with her, with a three-year-old<MH7969> bull<MH6499>, one<MH259> ephah<MH374> of flour<MH7058>, and a jug<MH5035a> of wine<MH3196>, and brought<MH935> him to the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> in Shiloh<MH7887>, although the child<MH5288> was young<MH5288>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Then they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>slaughtered<MH7819> the bull<MH6499>, and brought<MH935> the boy<MH5288> to Eli<MH5941>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/1-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And she said<MH559>, &#8220;Pardon<MH994a> me, my lord<MH113>!
