Creating a map of the world involves incorporating a distortion of some kind. The map that we typically use, called a Mercator map, preserves local angular relationships, which makes sailing around the world easier. But it also tends to enlarge countries near the poles and shrink those near the equator.

As Adam Taylor of the Post's WorldViews blog writes, two computer developers based out of Detroit have created an interactive graphic, "True Size," that puts the distortion of the Mercator map into perspective. The tool allows you to move the outline of countries or states around the world to see how they really compare to other places.

In the image above, you can see how the size of the largest U.S. states compare to the continent of Africa, which is shrunk down in the Mercator projection. You can see that Africa is truly massive in comparison.

To read more, click here.

Ana Swanson
August 19 at 11:04 am
https://web.archive.org/web/20150905053949/http://knowmore.washingtonpost.com/2015/08/19/how-the-size-of-california-texas-and-alaska-really-compare-to-africa/
https://web.archive.org/web/20150905053949/https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2015/08/18/this-interactive-map-shows-how-wrong-other-maps-are/
https://web.archive.org/web/20150905053949/https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2015/08/18/this-interactive-map-shows-how-wrong-other-maps-are/
https://web.archive.org/web/20150905053949/http://knowmore.washingtonpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Africa.png
Looking for a high-earning major? The "natural amenities index" is intended as "a measure of the physical characteristics of a county area that enhance the location as a place to live."

"The index combines "six measures of climate, topography, and water area that reflect environmental qualities most people prefer." Those qualities, according to the USDA, include mild, sunny winters, temperate summers, low humidity, topographic variation, and access to a body of water.

"I've mapped all the counties above according to where they rank on the natural amenities index -- mouse over to check out how desirable (or not) your own county is. After Ventura, Humboldt, Santa Barbara, Mendocino and Del Norte counties round out the top 5.

"By contrast the great lakes region fares poorly, with most of the lowest rankings clustered around the Minnesota/North Dakota border region -- hey there, Fargo!
