earthquakes still rumbling under Kumamoto Prefecture could inflict more damage than Sony is insured for -- 20 billion yen ($184 million) -- the Japanese corporation said on Thursday.</p><p>Sony's main image sensor plant is in the southwestern prefecture, and the factory has been damaged by the series of tremors. Operations remain suspended.</p><div class="page_limit free"></div><div class="page_limit"></div><p>Chief Financial Officer Kenichiro Yoshida told reporters that Sony on May 24 will announce its earnings estimates for the fiscal year through next March. Quake-related losses will be factored into the estimates.</p><p>Yoshida said the company's earthquake insurance covers up to 20 billion yen in physical damage as well as related sales losses. "It is possible," he said, "that the insurance will not cover the entire loss."</p><p>The Kumamoto plant produces image sensors for digital, security and smartphone cameras. Yoshida said damage to finished products is limited but that Sony is still checking on how half-finished products have survived.</p><p>He also said a part of the plant that has suffered little damage will resume production at the end of May.</p><p>On Thursday, Sony posted a net profit of 147.7 billion yen for the year through March, its first net profit since the year through March 2013.</p><p>Sony fared less well in the January to March quarter, when slowing global demand for smartphones left the company with a net loss of 88.3 billion yen.</p><p>Moreover, Sony in fiscal 2015 recorded an impairment loss of 59.6 billion yen on camera module related assets, reflecting the slack in the global smartphone market.</p><p>"We misread the demand from our customers," Yoshida said. "Though we are now selling to Chinese smartphone makers, we don't think demand will fully recover until the second half of this fiscal year."</p><div class="page_break auto free"></div><div class="page_break auto"></div><p>He added that "we will plan our business based on the idea that the smartphone market has moved into a low-growth period."</p><p>Global smartphone sales do appear to have peaked. Apple, which created the market in 2007, sold 16% fewer iPhones in the January to March quarter compared with the same quarter a year earlier.
