Military families tend to move often, and young Hamill lived in California, Virginia, New York, and Japan before he was 18. By his teens, Hamill knew he wanted to be an actor, and he became a drama major at Los Angeles City College. His first breakthrough came on the soap Days of Our Lives, where he worked from 1972-73. In a precursor to his later career, Hamill also did voice work on the kid's show Jeannie, an animated follow-up to the successful I Dream of Jeannie, and on such 1970s Saturday-morning fare as Fred Flintstone and Friends. He has performed hundreds of voices for cartoons, and frequently speaks for more than one character in a movie or series. His real break, of course, was when <a href="/people/539/000022473/">George Lucas</a> hired him to play Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. Hamill had also been cast as the oldest son on the television series Eight is Enough, but he sensed that Star Wars might be a career-maker, and tried to back out of his contract. The TV show's producers, though, were excited at the idea of having an actor who might be a hot new movie star, and insisted that he play the role. Then Hamill was in a car accident, reportedly injured badly enough that he could not work, and Eight is Enough recast his role. Some reports at the time said Hamill was severely disfigured, but he now insists that he only suffered a broken nose. In the second Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back, he sported a new scar on his upper lip. In addition to the three Star Wars films, Hamill starred in 1978's Corvette Summer with <a href="/people/260/000025185/">Annie Potts</a>, and <a href="/people/319/000086061/">Samuel Fuller</a>'s semi-autobiographical semi-classic The Big Red One with <a href="/people/314/000026236/">Lee Marvin</a>. Audiences and producers, however, were reluctant to see Hamill as anyone but Luke Skywalker, and for most Americans, Hamill dropped off the face of the Earth after the third Star Wars film, Return of the Jedi.
